Incredible video, thanks for this. I have a mac which has the worst options for video capture, This saved me alot of $$$ not having to buy a PC. What i would say is that people know that the Diagram has some typos and missing info. For example the BlackMagic video assist is 3G and not 6G (doesn't exist, next step up is 12G). the last thing is that the cable going form the Black Magic Converter to the Video assist is a BNC/SDI to "mini-BNC/SDI" i wasted money on a regular BNC and didnt realize that the black magic comes with the correct cable already.Other than that this is a super solid set up and perfect for my "non-proffessional" set up that i just use to capture home videos.

Thank you Dave for this incredible tutorial! Last year I spent weeks converting about 80+ of my VHS tapes using my VHS/DVD combo and the Elgato Video Capture. While it got the job done, there were times the app would crash and I also noticed there were audio sync issues with some of my converted files (and I wasn't about to go through the arduous task of re-syncing). Thanks to your video and the helpful links, I've purchased most of the components (and per your recommendation, I found a Panasonic AG-1980 P on eBay for a steal!) and I'm going to recapture all of my tapes using your method. THANK YOU AGAIN! 🙌🏾🤝🏾💯

I still use the tape-to-DVD method of conversion, courtesy of a Toshiba DVD recorder. Sure, the DVD's take up space over time, but I use Handbrake to rip the content on each DVD, where you can then store on a HDD for that MPEG file. There isn't any TBC self-correcting technology, but the timing comes across fine. I find this process a little too complicated (and a bit more expensive) for my tastes, but thanks for the detailed explanation.

Hey Dave, My method of transferring tapes is using JVC S-VHS decks that have built in TBC for 2 & 6 hour speed tapes. For my 4 hour speed tapes I use Panasonic HIFI vcrs because since they can record in LP speed I feel they give the best quality possible in that speed. I want to buy a Panasonic 1970 or 1980 but they are expensive & cost a lot of money if needing repairs. I use Panasonic DVD Recorders with built in Hard Disk Drives to transfer to dvd. This way I can edit, add chapters, split video, etc.

The line TBC (full field line TBC in the Panasonic 1980) is different than the external frame TBC. A line and a frame TBC both momentarily digitize the video then they turn it back to analog. A line TBC digitizes lines on the picture which corrects the image. A frame TBC digitized whole frames and stores them in a buffer then outputs them at the correct time. The frame TBC keeps you from dropping frames.

I always wondered why, no matter what video conversion method I use, my "do-it-yourself" attempts to digitize my VHS tapes always resulted in lower picture and audio quality compared to when I take them to a professional. The absolute best transfer deck for VHS or Super VHS tapes is the JVC D-VHS series decks. HM-DH30000U or HM-DH40000U. From the JVC brochure: JVC’s DigiPure Technology: ● Digital Wide TBC (Time Base Corrector) helps stabilize the picture of old tapes and rental cassettes. ● Precision 3-D Color Circuit provides clear color separation and sharpens image edges. ● Precise Digital 3-D YNR/CNR improves the S/N ratio by approximately 3dB. ● Precise Digital 3-D Y/C Separation reduces dot interference at image borders and improves the S/N ratio. ● Digital R3 Picture System which applies edge correction to the luminance signal to enhance detail. And providing a solid foundation for Digital 3-Dimensional Circuit with 4MB Frame Memory. Output signals via the Component video output connectors. To a component capture card. Better than the S-VHS connector. I output the component signal to a Sony DV cam deck with component inputs and come out of the DV Cam deck FireWire to a computer capture. The results are the best you can squeeze out of a VHS or S-VHS transfer.

I think that should work out okay doing that. Would probably need to use the bnc y ntsc input I’m guessing. Curious how the onboard digitizer/frame sync of the VCR outputs the signal vs the Blackmagic converter/digitizer/VDoo TBC setup.. Great workflow, I picked up the field recorder from your suggestion. Just curious what Codec you are using to record everything with, or if you found anything better than the prores-hq setting. Im in 525i ntsc and its not allowing DNxHr. Trying to get the best image quality without loss. Or if i would need to switch to a BM Sdi to USB and capture software to achieve this. Excellent info for VHS lovers you have here!

Hi, Dave ! I have a Panasonic combo DMR-ES35V which outputs VHS rocksteady over component, straight into a Intensity Shuttle, all other outputs are also rocksteady, it's strange, because it doesn't mention a TBC anywhere and isn't Super-VHS. your Panasonic combo has also component (YUV) out, but also for VHS ? i believe it does, but not while recording to dvd i read in the manual…. So i don't use a TBC with my DMR-ES35V …Did you try using your DMR- ES40V without the TBC ? on mine i have no HDMI or SD card slot. s-video without TBC should also work, it does also with mine Anaog to SDI, then Micro Converter SDI to HDMI (3G) which goes into my Hyperdeck Shuttle HD which has also 2 options for h.264 codec recording, apart from the ProRes422… etc...

Hey Xavier! Not sure if these units that have HD outputs work with with VHS, but it may be possible. From what I've researched in the past, usually the component outputs are only reserved for the DVD section. My Panasonic VCR svid output is pretty good, much better than older VCRs, but it struggles with older tapes at times from what I've seen, and the TBC usually cleans that up from what I've experienced.

@@DavesArchives You have the ES46 i now see, i did read somewhere else, it has to do with the chip-set used in these machines. component was used for the LCD tv's before the HDMI "age" component didn't provide copyright protection in progressive mode, HDMI does. thanks to Holywood :)

VCR's usually have line TBC's, they fix line timing, they can only store few lines, The external TBC's are usually frame TBC's that fix frame timing and store fields, There are very few external TBC's that combine both line and frame TBC, So you have to distinguish between the two as they serve completly tow different functions. If computer is available one can skip the $500 field recorder and use a PCIe SDI ingest card for as little as $50. Plus de-interlacing and upscaling on the fly degrades the video, It's better to capture lossless AVI 4:2:2, de-interlace with QTGMC and upscale later, Which is what I do for my channel. Not to mention that you can replace your external TBC and the mini converter with one device like the BE75 or one of GrassValley devices (former Snell & Wilcox), Some of these ar built in both line TBC and frame TBC in one chip.

The Blackmagic Mini Converter analog to SDI is no longer available. Have you tested whether a self-recording (where you know the number of frames) still has the same number of frames and synchronous sound after being digitized for over 2 hours? The latency of the TBC must be compensated for with an audio delay. I couldn't get Blackmagic Intensity (PRO and Shuttle) to run correctly (accept the source speed) with a Pioneer DVR-LX60 as PAL TBC. Deinterlacing should NEVER be used for archival purposes. Exception: film, as the source is practically progressive.

Haven’t done any type of frame sync but I don’t experience issues with audio delay most of the time. On rare occasions a tape will have odd audio delays but I believe it to be the tape itself.

What? You found your BV TBC10 for how much? 2 for 20$ each. That’s crazy. With BV10s the generation is very important. They are best bought from a professional. Only the early BV 10s are really desired. You said people don’t know what they’re selling with those but really the issue is people don’t know what they’re buying. I’m talking about people buying it for 1,200 on eBay. Not you buying it for $20. At 20 dollars though it seems like a good buy.

Thanks for that! Definitely recommend SVID over RCA if you want to squeeze out the best quality. Otherwise the video will only be good as the RCA output, which carries lesser video signal when compared to SVID. My project timeline in Adobe Premiere is always set to 1080p, and from there I export the video to 4k.
