I’m getting a civilian job (non-military and non-military contract), Fortune 500. I am being asked to submit for a Secret Clearance, but have a 26 year old article 15 in my record. Is there a way to have this removed (timely), or how far back does a Secret Clearance, go in the investigation process, that maybe I don’t have to make it known, due to the time lapse and no other military and civilian crimes?

The key is to be honest. The article 15 should have no impact as I know for a fact that when dealing with military clearances they don’t care about the article 15 usually they just want you to disclose it. Usually the only time they get concerned is when you omit something and they find out. If they find out you did not disclose on purpose then that usually raises an eyebrow and causes problems. If you simply forgot about it then they will usually ask a lot if probing questions. Generally an article 15 does not carry a lot of weight in the civilian world most civilians don’t even know what it is. My only thoughts are to be honest and answer the questions you are asked honestly. Remember there are thousands of veterans out there with article 15s. If what you did was so bad you would have been court marital. An article 15 is designed to deal with minor infractions. So keep that in mind when answering questions. Besides it was 26 years ago. People grow and learn from their mistakes. Hope this helps.

Sir, I got one (A 15 Suspended) in 1992 when I was in the Air Force. I separated three months later after completing my 4 year enlistment. I was honourably discharged. Is there anyway to have this removed from my records? Thank you and God bless.

You can apply to the board of military correction. My question is why is this important? Generally an Article 15 will not impact you in the civilian world. Feel free to text me your number at [e-mail] We can talk specifics.

The services all work from a set of DoD directives in which each service develops their policy, procedure, and regulatory guidance. With that said I am fairly sure the AF has such a policy.
