The most asked questions that I've had - "are you using the mic's on the RX100 V" or "does the RX100 V have a built in mic input". The answer to both is no, but I will share a little secret.
I present to you, the Sparrow Mach I… a run-and-gun shooting rig that I have built for the RX100 V.
Parts:
RODE Videomicro amzn.to/2fXH6pO
ZOOM H1 Recorder amzn.to/2fYYb6n
Vello Flash Bracket amzn.to/2fXCC2I

This is awesome, I bought all 3 parts immediately after watching this. For me the built-in audio in the RX100v isn't terrible, but there are times where I must be accidentally covering up the microphone or something and it sounds like absolute garbage. Figure it would be better to just invest another 150 bucks and not have to deal with this anymore. Thanks for the recommendations.

Again we get closer to your world Ted. Love these kind of videos where creativity is also about thinking out ways for tackling problems and finding solutions - Solutions that are adapted to your (our) needs. Sometimes you don't have to compromise with what you've got, ,you can take it to a next level. Many DIY solutions exist, so why not put our hands into them or try adapting it to your own needs. Here you have created a great audio kit, very light and small, gotten a nice rig for mounting these ergonomically for one precise goal - getting quality audio. We saw your thinking process and you give us motives to personalize our own gear for our specific needs. Would love to see more of those Ted!

I built this and wanted to add a quick thing about the Zoom. It's a great little recorder, but the body is plastic and when I screwed it in I did it too tight and it killed the threads on the thing. What I ended up doing was going to my local store and buying like a 1/4" female adapter and then taking apart the zoom I drilled a hole big enough to fit it and then glued in in there. In addition I picked up a little gasket (like on you have in your bathroom faucet and put it on the screw before screwing it in (compression). It's pretty tight and works great. The only beef I have with the Zoom is that you have to hold it down to turn it on, and that gets annoying really quick (on, record, off. On, record, off). Also, the led readout is on the bottom of this setup so you gotta flip the camera to see if it's recording. I'll try to flip it so the mic is hanging instead on top.

This is great, Ted, and you are brilliant. Lusting after an RX100, just got a Drift Ghost S to tide me over and am looking at the Rode Micro... Just can't believe nobody out there has hacked a 3.5mm jack into one of these Sonys... all the gubbins is in there. I've spent months looking for a 1930's Leica that HASN"T had a flash synch added at some point!! A drill and a soldering iron - it can't be that tricky. If any upgraders have an older model they'd be willing to try it out on, I'd be eternally grateful if it can be made to work.

I have been rocking a Canon 1000D since I was 16 and learning about photography. It was pretty good for the travel photography I used to do and it's now showing it's age. It has never been able to take video though so I used to resort to my phone. I am a student so not a lot of money, meaning this kind of set up might work for me if I can get my hands on a cheap mirrorless to replace my veteran camera.

Hi Ted, I've watched this video many times because I own the Sony RX100V and the Rode Videomicro. But they are were purchased for different purposes. But I love this run and gun rig you made. So I decided to get the Zoom H1n and it has done wonders for me! But recently I was gifted the Rode Wireless Go and with this setup, not only it is lighter (I normally use a Sony a6400 setup) and much better sound quality but very packable when I vlog and travel. Thank you for the inspiration!

I think a lot of KZbinrs do make their videos with this kind of dual system. I make videos outdoors a lot and I have tended to put my trust in a headworn microphone connected to a small field recorder (I use the Tascam DR22WL but I know a lot of people prefer Zoom and the H1 in particular). My thinking was by keeping the sound unit on me is the best option as then the microphone is as close to me as I can get. I have therefore steered away from fitting a shotgun. This suggests that I should rethink that. Lavaliere microphones are fine for when you are not moving but as you say the rustle that comes with movement isn't great. That is why I went for a headworn microphone. It wasn't cheap but I have been very glad of it for the last 18 months or so.

I’m impressed with Rode Video Micro. The spread is an advantage in some situations because it’s more forgiving than longer shotgun mics. I mostly use it on my iPhone camera rig (on top of an iographer case) and I’m experimenting with using it on a homemade boom. It’s a great cheap mic that will yield professional or near professional results even in the hands of an amateur.

TRRS is for inputting to a phone (which has a TRRS conector. The mic itself will work with standard connector going into standard 3.5mm input, so no need for the adapter if plugging into the zoom.

Hi, Interesting video as are the many viewers comments. Seems to me it is a good creative solution. As you say, will work with other compacts that stupidly don't have the mic input (really annoying). Am currently thinking of buying Sony RX100 IV and already have Lumix LX100 and Canon G5X. Why so many compacts??? - None of them quite do it all and the mic input is the biggest irritation. so for me it is an interesting solution. Thank you.

Popa Silviu RX 100 m3 doesn't have an external mic jack, so you can't plug anything into it. If you want to start a channel, just start shooting with an iPhone and see what you can do. Don't let the gear hold you back.

Great information . . . love this idea. Fuji have mic inputs on their APSC compact, but without in body stabilisation it's not deal for vLogging. I chose the Sony RX100v for this reason knowing I may have to sort out the audio in post. You can't really muffle the inbuilt mics on the Sony because inputs are too close to either side of the flash. Your rig sounds very nice :)

I just found your channel last night and I really appreciate what you are doing here! The lessons, challenges, and tech reviews are great. As an Imaging and Digital art college major graduate with a minor in traditional photography (medium format 2 1/4 Mamiya primarily) ...almost 20 years ago, with some old school AB roll video studio training and early Photoshop, Premiere, & After Effects, I think your channel is so awesome! I became a software developer after college, but I'm now ready to get back to the creative visual side. I've watched a number of your videos today and you have gained a new loyal subscriber! I love this setup you put together with the RX100 and external mic system. As I've been getting back into video, I really love the new gimbal footage. I was curious if you've put this rig on a powered gimbal or if you have any recommendations for doing such a thing. You have solved the audio issue with the RX100 and I'm 100% on board with the external mic setup. The last thing I want is that buttery smooth gimbal setup paired with this. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Every camera system involves trade offs. Clever you for making a deficiency into a positive the way you did. I'm now wondering though... trading off the other way for run and gun video with external mic port, how much size and weight to I have to take to gain that port? The RX100V and the GX7II are small and both have the fully articulated screen you can flip for vlog. I'm now wondering which cameras keep that, stay small but have that port.

I've got a similar setup for couple off months now but it is not great. 1. While filming some parts can come loose easily. 2. You have to sync the audio with every shot 3. Good video, and the umpteenth proof that to get decent audio with the rx100 series, you need a much clunkier, bigger setup than you'd need just by using the exact same mic with a much bigger sensor camera, better controls and a proper mic jack, with the additional benefit of completely getting rid of the need to sync in post, which is no small feat. So Sony, I made the mistake once, but not again. I don´t want 9.3K resolution and 7376fps with nose hair detection if my videos sound like crap 80% of the time. So you either give us a proper mic jack (which I wouldn´t say is too much to ask on a f. 1200eur compact camera) or many customers will be spending their money elsewhere, starting with this one.

Would be interesting to see the distance of the camera to you. The closer the better of course, but that is the opposite for the camera, I always try to have 35mm as a minimum, but that probably will be too far for the rode mic, or is it not? I have tried so many things for quick setup in capturing sound, so thanks for sharing this, Ted !

The Zoom H1 captures better quality audio than the Rode VideoMicro. I have a similar setup, and switch between using the H1 and VideoMicro. I really like the sound from the H1; it's a high resolution recorder that picks up a lot of rich ambient sound. So, it's not surprising the H1 picks up a lot of handling noise. It's designed to work on a dedicated mic stand in a controlled environment. The VideoMicro works best when speaking directly into it at close distance (~6 inches). It tends to pick up ambient sound at medium+ distance, which isn't really pleasant. But, the VideoMicro picks up a lot less camera handling noise, which makes it easier to use than the H1. The take away from Ted's video should be, to use the right gear for the right job.

Hi, Like the RX100 V, GoPros do not have a microphone jack but I found an alternative for the GoPro. Instead of using their internal mic, I was able to use a micro USB microphone and it made the sound so much better. Is it possible for the RX100 V to receive audio through its micro USB port?

I called Sony customer service in USA and they said their ports if used for anything other than the intended use for RX100 series, would damage the ports. The guy said they tested it in Sony lab and the ports broke. So there's a major risk in trying the usb to mic adapters out there. No microphone, as HDMI is strictly output with no input into the camera. USB is for charging and transferring files from the camera to the output only, so no audio input there also.

Another great video. I've been wanting to get that same setup, Zoom H1 and Rode Videomicro. Great combo.

Possibly due to age of this video I won't get an answer but will give it a shot anyway. Have scrolled down and looked at a lot of the questions to try and find an answer but couldn't find it. Have found some people saying the Sony ECM-XYST1M mic is compatible with the RX100 from version 2 onward. Could you please confirm/deny the truth of this. Thank you. Love the channel

My kingdom for a pocket camera like the Sony or the Canon G7X that has a cold shoe and a mic input. It can't be that hard, can it?

4k can go from 5 to 10 minutes. 1080P can go as long as the memory card size and or battery life runs. whichever goes first. Whats the exact name/ model number of the Vello bar?

Great video but am I dumb in thinking that you could buy a dirt cheap recorder and buy the Rode VideoMicro Compact and have the same quality audio. What's the point in buying a fairly decent mid range recorder if your not gonna use the mic on it. As long as the recorder has a mic socket that's all that matters. Right?

Why not just go with the a6300 or a6500? That's probably more compact that the sparrow rig... whole lot easier post production too.

Wouldn't it be better to place the video micro below the zoom h1? to be able to see the levels and if you're peeking.

If only there's a pocket camera like the Sony RX100 V, but with hotshoe and mic input... It seems like it's what everyone wants, yet camera manufacturers tend to put those features on bigger bulkier cameras which aren't as convenient and compact to use for vlogging.

Off memory you can fix the H1 issue by setting the audio levels so they don't automatically hunt for sound when you stop talking

Did you have the wind filter set to ON on the rx100? I found that took far too much low end out of the audio and still didn't really fix any wind sounds.

It is interesting that so many doesn't even yet or give an credit for integrated microphones that Olympus has in its OM-D cameras and Panasonic in some of it models like GH4. The microphones has far better quality than any Canon or Nikon models or likely Sony has. Olympus does one of the best industry microphones for an audio from dictation recorders to an everything. And I once tested the sensitivity of older OM-D model and it was capable to capture clean not distorted swan songs from a 1.5km distance. A motorcycle from a 5-7km distance where you can recognize all the curves and straights of road so you know where it is driving and very low frequency ice cracking and water movements under over from a 400m distance that you can barely hear yourselves. The Olympus mics needs just an added wind cancellations for windy situations but otherwise they very likely are best in industry for the cleanness and dynamic range you can get. That is one reason why I stopped using Zoom H1 and H2n for audio mainly. I take H2n only when I need an off-camera audio or 2-4ch surround or if I need to use its center mic to focus mono without shotgun.
