As a retired video professional I really appreciated early on in my career working with audio pros. They helped educate me on how proper audio enhanced the production. When I edited the video I could hear the difference their professional audio recording techniques made. You may not have the luxury of having an audio engineer on your shoots, but the simple tips Jeven and Sidney are sharing can up your game!

This is unbelievably helpful and useful. Mad respect for putting so much helpful info in one single video. One thing I want to add is that with the voice-over in a closet trick at the end, the biggest game changer is to also insulate BEHIND you. Yes your voice is going the direction the clothes in the closet are, and those deaden the sound significantly. But what no one ever thinks about is how much the microphone in there picks up from the opposite direction. Sure, the amount of reflections is reduced heavily by those clothes, but if you're able to hang something behind you or even stand a whole mattress or something (zero budget idea) up on its side and create a soft wall behind you, it'll take those VO recordings from great to fantastic!

Hey Jeven, just want to say thank you for putting out your videos. After watching your videos I decided to make some steps toward my goal of building my own KZbin and Instagram creator pages. The first step for me was getting past that awkward feeling of being on camera. I also thought that my equipment would limit me too much, but again after watching one of your videos I decided to stop putting up obstacles for myself and just get out there and try things out. I appreciate it!

Critical topic! After 30+ years in the video business (now retired) I can’t tell you how important good audio recording is. You must spend as much time and effort into getting the best audio possible for your video editor. He/she can only fix so much in post! Your points on mic placement are spot on! Shotgun mics do reject sound from the sides but they do need to be as close to the subject as possible and yet stay out of frame. However, you can avoid plosives by talking slightly across the mic rather than directly into it. Overall you shared great tips. Thnx!!

Hey Guys, that was a well presented uncomplicated straight to the throat informative sketch. Much appreciated and hope to see more of these focused sketches. It cannot be stressed enough how bad sound can effect the best of videos. People seem to understand that given certain out door activities some times intrusive wind noise is unavoidable. Feed-back is the breakfast of champions, and Jeven I have to say visually this sketch irritated me. Both you guys probably wouldn’t be able to talk if you had to quieten down the movement of your hands.... lol. Most people are the same and that’s ok. Hands the size of your head flashing in my face across the screen is unsettling. The other guys mic setup looked way out of proportion which is a shame because us out here are just as interested in the equipment as what you are saying. Jeven when you held your mic in front of you when talking about wind shields I froze the shot and went and got my exact same setup to see if it was the same. But yours was a longer version of my Rode video mic. I’m sure you must be aware of this. My question to you is why don’t you use a longer lens and frame the shot same as with your close lens. All body parts would then have a natural proportion and things wouldn’t be so in the face.

Thanks for this video series, Simon and Jeven! What if our cameras don't have a mic port? I have a Lumix GX85, has a built in mic and I'd like to add a portable mic. Will the Zoom H1N work as a separate audio recorder and bring it into post production? Thanks for any tips. You guys are amazing.

This is really topical. Even professional main stream media people are working from home. More often than not the sound from their home office really sucks. We could all use help improving audio - especially from the home office. I've been hanging blankets up all around my office. I'm really sick of it. I was hoping there would be a silver bullet in some special microphone for doing voice over. I like the hack of standing a couple of sound panels either side of you. I'll give that a go. Thanks!

Thank you for this video, I have the most difficult time getting good audio even though I have a good mic, the same one you have: Rode VideoMic Pro+. What I'd love to learn more about is what settings on that mic do you use for different situations? I found that the +20 setting is good for quieter rooms, but the sound can easily sound distorted if someone starts speaking loudly. If I use the default setting on the RODE mic, the sound is too low and I end up having to increase it in post, which adds additional noise to the audio. I can't figure out how to get the best sound quality from this mic even though everyone says it's a good mic. Is the fact I have it attached to an iPhone to capture the audio why it's not as good? Would love another video tutorial about using this specific mic, or your advice, thanks!

Thank you for putting so much efforts into making this video. One problem I face is, I use a boya Shotgun mic, Knock off of Rode Video Micro, Even with dead cat, when it's even mildly windy, I won't hear the wind, but it actually cuts off the audio, like literally, i tried recording audio and shaking the mic at same time, and it happened.. the bracket which holds the mic and goes into hot shoe is also decent, not bad. Can you tell what could be the possibily of audio cutting off. I can't use the mic in wind at all. Audio becomes unusable

I use one extra phone to get this sound and make the interview with a little quality. Hi Jeven, I am going to start a health channel here in KZbin, thatfore I started to do some tests before recording the first video and I have some audio troubles. I got many Rode mics to test for a while, the VideoMic Go, VideoMicro, Lavalier Go, Wirless Go. I have a Dell Laptop and a Canon T3i. I recorded in OBS with and without filters. I have a lot of withe noise or statics. With filters I solved part of the problem because when I talk my voice has the statics on the background, also it sound little bit robotic or opaque/dull. With the T3i I tried all the manual audio levels and there is always a lot of statics that I can clean about 70% in Magix Video deluxe but there is still noise. I got the Zoom H1n recorder because there are videos that suggest that to get clean audio and I was really desapointed, there's static noise from the recorder from level 3 to level 10, not conected to any other device, boosting the audio for the laptop or for the DSLR, I got the same static noise problem but wasting money and time. Even, I got a U Phoria UMC22 hoping that could solve the problem using the USB signal and not an analog signal, but I didn't know I can't connect the Rode mics to an audio interface using the 1/4"-1/8" adaptor. I thought that the audio issue would be easy, I have seen lots of videos with good quality, just like yours, clean and good audio, but in my case I tried all mics, and conexions and can't find the solution. I appreciate your support. (sorry for my bad English, hopefully I could explain myself). Regards

Thank you very much for the tips, tricks and advice. I am new to film making and am about to shoot my first. My camera (Sony HXR-MC2500) has a stereo mic (ECM-PS1) and I also have a Sennheiser MKE200 mic. There is no comparison between the two. I will be making a short film in about a month and am very concerned about the sound quality. I have no other recording equipment and filming will take place in a kitchen which will be terrible for acoustics. Also, I will be the only crew which means I won't be able to film, swing a boom, operate lighting, etc at the same time. Is there anything I can do in post to get rid of the echo that I am certain will occur? BTW, Wind screen = dead wombat - love it. I have a cousin who calls it a monkey penis.
