Excellent! However, one video tip since nobody can't give you audio tips :) Just re-frame a little and optimize the head room, which is a little too much. Makes you look smaller. It's standard for every interview shot for example.

Much thanks, man. I like my Genius microphone (one of those old mics down here in South Africa that works top-notch). My workflow is Equalizer, Compressor, De-Esser. Since I'm working with a pretty old microphone, I sound rather high and I sometimes blow into the mic if I speak, so I first equalize my audio to remove the unwanted noise while making it sound more natural. Then I use the dim-witted compressor to reduce any volume bounces so I don't have to worry about GETTING SCARED of how close I was to the mic then you can't hear me a second later. To top things off, I can use the Low-pass filter and find the right setting to dial down all the unwanted hissing in my audio.

Hi Alex, I found you through Potato Jet, a while back. Immediately loved your content and subscribed. I really like how you outlined the order of operations (Compressor, DeEsser, etc) and you specified the importance of the order. Your explanations made perfect sense. I really enjoyed that you mentioned an exception to the order...in the case of wind noise affecting the dialogue audio, requiring extra EQ 1st. I don't believe that my compressor (Premiere Pro) has side-chaining built into the plugin. However, Premiere has a multi-band compressor plugin....which sounds like a way to side-chain...like the DeEsser. Aside from wind noise, can you name some other times that you would need to use side-chaining for dialogue? Is the multi-band compressor (or side-chaining) used less for dialogue, and more so for recording music? Thank you for the great video, Alex.

Quick question: if I can't point the microphone (Rode Video Mic Pro) at the talkers' chest because it picks up too much ambient noise from the thing they are talking about (rustling fabric on a table), am I better pointing the microphone at their mouth, and get all of the mouth clicks? Or above their head and lose some richness?

Have you tried the leveler in Izotope RX Advanced? I've been using that for diolog lately. I like the loudness based settings, and built in declick and deesser.

Great question! It definitely does a good job of forcing audio into the right spec, but since it's a destructive process, I really don't find myself using it. For things like KZbin, it's totally workable. At the pro level, however, we need to retain as controlled and non-destructive a workflow as possible, so we end up using a very different workflow than just a leveling pass.

You just have a mistake about attack and release it in how much you wanted it to reach the full compression or release it but it's working immediately
