I watched this just before showering and I have to say, I am blown away!!! I followed all your tips and my hair came out gorgeous!!! It curled at the roots, which I didn't even realize it would do 🤯🤯🤯 I think the two things that helped me the most were 1. Combing out clumps, being careful to lift my roots up, and 2. Not using as much product. I also used the comb trick for applying a foam. I haven't had my hair come out this good (without a lot more effort) in a really long time! Thank you! 💕💕💕💕

I have to work VERY hard for root volume & curl, but I CAN do it, & it took me FOREVER to figure out extra tricks. That foam on the comb you mentioned is pretty good, but for me I like to lift with the comb & then add some hairspray for grit, I do this at like 90% dry, & then I use the diffuser to sort of "press" the lifted root area up & in, hold, release, repeat, and once I've done the entire surface of my head, then I use some root clips (on still warm hair), quickly hit it with a bit more hairspray or texture spray, and then quickly hit it with warm air from the diffuser again, & leave the clips in for about 10-15 minutes (I wash at night). In the morning, after my hair settles for 5 minutes or so, I re-clip the roots & quickly hit them with the warm air again, & then leave the clips in until I get to work. I have fine textured, low to medium density curls, with that extra silky feel that's too slippery to do anything with unless you make it gritty🤷🏽‍♀️ If I do this, the slightly crunchy feel that will be in my roots for the 1st day (well for the next day, technically, since I wash at night) is worth it because it works itself out, and will actually hold the lift & curl I got thru to day 3, and sometimes even day 4 with no touchups. By day 5 I might have lost some lift but the root curl will still be there. This sounds like a lot, but like most things once you're used to the routine it's not bad, doesn't really take that long, & you get used to it & don't even need to think about it, it just becomes routine. The trick is remembering to bring in all your root clips from your car by your next washday lol. Oh, & I use mostly small claw clips, with a couple of curl keeper roller jaw clamps. The metal ones always get stuck & cause breakage for me.

This video was super helpful for me! My hair starts a small S wave at the root, but my roots do have a tendency to fall more flat, because of the way it waves. My curl starts about 1 1/2 to 2 inches down. I realized I may be putting too much product on my hair, as well, and I do tend to put a small amount at my roots. My hair is much shorter than yours, and although I have fine strands, I do have high density/thick hair, so I thought I needed the extra product, not necessarily for hold, but so my curls wouldn't end up getting too broken apart and too frizzy as the days wore on. But then, again, I usually don't have a problem with my curl stretching out, too much. Today is wash day, and I can't wait to try these techniques! Thanks a ton for this information!!! ❤ Another thing I forgot to mention. I completely understand what you're saying about your hair reverting back. That's what my hair does after a day or two, whether or not I've over moisturized. I think it's just my curl pattern is, eventually, stronger than any product, and it will revert to it's natural pattern. I actually love my hair day 2, day 3 better than original wash/style day.

Wow such a stark difference, great comparison video thank you 🙏🏻 I have some curl at the root but mostly wavy at the root with curl at the bottom and all the techniques you show really do help get the most definition and volume at the root. I loved the tip on using volume foam on a pick because I have very soft hair even though it’s course and that can flatten my hair. I’m definitely going to try that one. Thanks Sophie Marie ❤

What a very useful and informative video. When you said your hair naturally curls from the root, I knew straightaway you got that from your dad. However my grandfather had curly hair from the root and back in the 30s and into the 90s he would use heavy products to grease it back to make it straight, so I guess that supports your theories. Another great video . Mumma xxx

Thx for the video. I am finally getting a Devacut for the first time at the end of March. We only have one hairstylist in my area that can do it. I have had chronic anemia for the last few years so the top of hair has had a lot of loss unfortunately. I hope the devacut helps make my hair look thicker.

Sophie, you literally have the best curly hair videos out there on KZbin. I’m so happy you started a KZbin channel. I usually use the innersense foam for volume at the top of my head when it wet. Do you think I should do it when it’s also almost dry ..

Hey Audra, thanks you, means so much 😊 With the foam, I have tried the curlsmith volume foam on my hair when 70/80% dry and it gave a lot of volume. Sometimes when I'm diffusing and I notice hair is looking flatter I add a bit of foam in to save it. But I have never tried the innersense one btw xx

Is it possible to get root definition without using a brush 👀 also do you have any tips for reducing breakage and hair fall/shedding for the people that are experiencing more hair fall and shedding than usual. I love your ig posts but i'm so glad you're making longer youtube videos! Love the detail so thank you 🥰💛

Hello from Connecticut 👋 I’ve recently found your channel and I feel like I’ve found a hidden gem. I’m 53, but I’m an old dog who’s learning new tricks lol. I wanted to ask you two questions. Do you use hairspray to keep your hair voluminous? I rake and shake and flip and dip and my hair looks voluminous for about three minutes then it falls down. I just cannot keep the big hair that I love. Second, Can you apply curl cream and gel and mousse in your hair at the same time? If so, what’s the order it goes in???

Really great tips and video, thank you. I really love your vlogs and have learnt so much. I loved the curly hairstyles video because I have always struggled to know how to style my curly hair but I have now tried the braids one which you hairband under the chin and then put over the head and round the back, it was lovely so thank you. much appreciated.😀

Thank you! Love your videos! Have you ever put your products on with your head upside down? I find if I don’t do that, I get zero volume. If I put my products on and brush upright, my hair looks like your right side. Ugh! I wish I could do brush styling, but I just can’t. 😢

CS has a Shine Gel (9) & Jelly (6). Not sure which? I am bludgeoning in the same thing about product. For years i used waaay too much gel for my fine low density hair. I was really scared to use less, so I didn't, until I got a terrible cut 😂😭

Love the 'less' product side. It's not really a true comparison though. Did you try to shake out the roots on the side with 'too much' product at any point? You didn't do it in the video and mentioned breakage. If you used your fingers that it would not cause breakage. Loved the video though.

10:02 I’ve figured out why, not the science to it… but if You over moisturize Your hair, the moisture will give out and the hair is going to want another overdose of moisture. Then You have a bit of an addiction problem, nobody needs that. Most deep conditioners say “Use 2-3 times per week” some say “1-2 times per week” and then the directions, leave in hair for 10-15 or 20 minutes. I’ve heard people leave a hair mask on overnight which damages the hair. I don’t know, maybe You can do a video explaining this and dig up the homework. ♔Suzy•
