I do several blends but my favorite is 1/4 grapefruit and 3/4 Valencia orange. They both ripen late and keep on the tree for several months. Many people pick and consume both too early in the season thus don't experience their fully ripe taste. It is May 1 and it looks like I'll be making that blend for another month. The grapefruit adds a bit of extra tartness to the sweetness of the Valencia.

That sounds delicious! Unfortunately in my climate I have not managed to grow a good grapefruit yet. I should try this with some of the California grapefruit hybrids.

The citrus industry should hire you. You have flesh ideas and show lot of passion.

Oh man, that color on the first blood orange is amazing!

I do love the color! In hindsight I probably should have done this on a pure white cutting board to further highlight the color.

It's possible to buy Sanguinelli seedling from VN?
@Fruitmentor7 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if it is available in VN or not. I'm also not sure if it would do well in the tropical climate. Assuming that you understand Vietnamese, you may be able to find out on the SOFRI website. SOFRI is Vietnam's citrus budwood program like CCPP that I mention in my grafting videos. They may have some citrus varieties that you would find interesting, and possibly Sanguinelli. I do not understand Vietnamese, so I cannot check it. See: sofri.org.vn/About.aspx?l=1

Hey fruitmentor what's your favorite blood orange?
@Fruitmentor7 жыл бұрын
If I had to pick one, I think it would be Tarocco. I am also very fond of the Boukhobza Maltese blood orange.

What, in your opinion, would be a reasonable substitute for blood orange juice. In my neck of the woods (Wisconsin), blood oranges seem to be extremely rare no matter the season. I was thinking that I could mix freshly squeezed orange juice with lemon or lime juice to approximate the taste of blood orange juice. Is this a good idea? Thanks for any help.
@Fruitmentor6 жыл бұрын
What do you need the blood orange juice for? Blood orange juice is really no more sour than regular orange juice. Blood orange juices have different flavors depending upon the variety. I think regular orange juice with red food coloring added would be a better substitute, but perhaps it depends upon your plans for the juice. Perhaps an even better option would be to find a farmer in California who sells direct over the internet and order a box shipped to you in Wisconsin.
