Step 1: Remove as much of the poop as quickly as possible
This step is important because the longer the poop sits on the carpet, the harder it might be to remove and the more likely it is to cause a stain or an odor.
So, put on a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands from any bacteria present in the dog's feces.
Then use a dust pan, spoon, dull knife or any suitable object to remove as much of the solid poop as possible. Place the scooped poop in a dog poop bag.
Be careful not to grind the poop into the carpet fibers while you do your best to remove as much of the solid poop as possible.
Please, Do NOT use a vacuum cleaner to pick up the poop as it can spread the bacteria and the smell.
Step 2: Pinch and use wipes to get out residue
After scooping, you might be left with a residue, depending on the texture of your dog’s poop. In that case, get some wipes and clean out any residue left. To do that effectively, pinch the carpet fibers, pull them up individually and clean each out thoroughly. The more thorough you are with this step the better your outcome will be.
Step 3: Neutralize the odor
Now it’s time to neutralize the odor…
1. In a bowl, mix one cup of white vinegar with one cup of warm water.
2. Using a clean cloth or a spray bottle, apply the mixture on the affected area of the carpet.
3. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes.
4. Use a clean cloth to blot up the mixture.
5. Repeat the process, if necessary, until you’ve got rid of the smell.
Bear in mind that vinegar can lighten or bleach certain types of carpet. Therefore, always test the solution on a hidden area of the carpet before using it on a large area.
Step 4: Clean the area
In a bowl, mix a solution of one-quarter teaspoon of mild, non-bleach detergent with one quart of warm water.
1. Test the cleaning solution on a hidden part of the carpet before using it on a conspicuous area.
2. Using a clean cloth or a sponge, gently scrub the affected area of the carpet with the cleaning solution.
3. Be sure to use a light touch and be careful not to grind the cleaning solution into the carpet fibers.
4. Use a clean cloth or a sponge to blot up the cleaning solution.
5. Repeat the process until you’ve cleaned out the stain.
Please, note that using a detergent that contains bleach can discolor the carpet and using too much detergent can leave a residue.
Furthermore, avoid using hot water or a steam cleaner on the carpet as heat can set any stains that may have been left behind.
Important note: Use an enzymatic cleaner in place of a detergent if you want better results. Here’s why…
An enzymatic cleaner is a type of cleaning solution that contains enzymes that break down organic matter, such as dog poop. They also break down odor-causing molecules, thereby neutralizing them.
To apply an enzymatic cleaner, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 5: Deodorize the area
Now sprinkle a small amount of baking soda over the affected area of the carpet.
Baking soda is a natural odor absorber and it can help to neutralize any lingering odors left in the carpet.
Next, rub the baking soda gently into the carpet fibers and leave it on the carpet for at least 30 minutes.
Thereafter, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda from the carpet.
Step 6: If possible, air-dry in sunlight
It’s a great idea to leave your carpet for a while to air-dry in the presence of sunlight.
Air-drying your carpet in sunlight helps for two reasons. First, it will dry out any remaining moisture on your carpet. Second, the UV rays from the sun do a great job of getting rid of odors.
But that said; don’t leave your carpet out for too long outside. This is because sunlight fades colors in a process known as photodegradation.
