This footage definitely demonstrates how intelligent ellies are. They wait for the big one to come in front. Then they start. One by one. Making certain babies get down. Making sure no broken legs. So awesome to see this. ❤

They huddled together, afraid to go first, until an apparently brave or more experienced elephant took the plunge. Also, some saw an elephant took a less scary area to slide down (on our left/on their right), and others followed and slid from that area. Like us humans, elephants are also afraid of heights. Some seem too scared to even try. They are big, but gentle, unless it's a male in musth, or a mamma protecting her baby from a predator. I wonder how, or if, they got back up the hill.

So cool to watch them showing the babies how to get around in the wild. The matriarch is always the first to go. They have a whole family structure. Moms aunts sisters brothers. If a baby elephant is born to older sisters the calf has a higher chance of survival than if the baby calf was born to a bigger brother. Crazy eh! They have some serious family dynamics that make me feel like my whole family life has been dysfunctional. I’m the middle of three sisters . Our children were all born close together, we never babysat each others kids or had any aunties take care of us, these majestic mother earths largest land mammals know perfectly how to do family. The boys stay with their family until coming of age aka ready to mate. Then they leave . Sometimes over time they will run into old childhood friends , they know every elephant out there most of the time. And the first 14 years of travelling they also know their direction like a built in compass . Something I really suck at. There are very intelligent. Amazing animals .

The little ones seem to cope better than the older elephants. The young one at 2:46 is very cute. Fear (caution) is something we learn with age.
