I'm not an engineer but I've run an engineering firm for 20 years. I've hired engineering interns for 12 years. What I've found is that many interns are not competent in CAD despite claiming to do so. Sure they can draw circles and squares but that's just about it. Most do not have proper attitude and believe that the company owes them basic knowledge and skills during internship. Therefore we're extremely selective in hiring interns. Out of 400-500 or so applicants, maybe we'll take one. Certain universities we unfortunately no longer accept.

Hi, I am gonna be starting university on September. I will study Mechatronics in UW. I want to get some skills that you mentioned until September and spend my summer efficiently. Is there any particular skill that you would recommend me to start with? I do not have any experience in programming, 3d modelling, etc. For Mechatronics what would be the most useful and important one? My plan is to get into an online course (maybe one with a certificate). Also, is there any particular online course or website that you recommend? Thank you.

@@tarnjot5939 Hi, my average was around 96 when I got accepted. I probably got accepted mostly because of my marks. My aif and interview were ok but nothing crazy. So, tbh I didn't do anything special I just tried to keep my marks high. Also, for engineering Physics and Advanced Functions are especially important and my mark for both these courses were pretty high, that might had an impact.
@tarnjot59393 жыл бұрын
@@emrehanklc8738 Ye, my average is around that but may I ask what was on your aif including experience and volunteerism to help me get a perception of an okay aif.

Mechatronics students usually end up working in the mechanical space or the software space. So, if ur interested in working in the mechanical space, then you could do a CAD course online in SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or CATIA V5. You could also find some free courses or online tutorials as well. But, if ur interested in software, then start teaching urself the basics of programming languages like HTML, CSS, Java, C++ or Python. I’m not sure what ur coding level is, but if u have some experience in programming, then u could start a course called “Data Structures and Algorithms.” That course is the key to helping you get high paying software internships.

It’s tough to get an internship when ur so young. So for now, I’d recommend to build your experience by working on ur own projects. Teach yourself SolidWorks or Fusion 360 or Inventor or any other CAD software of ur choice by using KZbin videos. Then start designing things and adding them in ur portfolio.
