Oh my… I’ve got to get in the habit of checking my overheads to make sure they’re in phase with kick, snare AND TOMS in the tracks. At least I measure them off equally to the snare when putting them up. And yes, I drag tracks around to put them in phase. Never had issues with that so far. Thanks Warren for yet more very informative pearls of knowledge and wisdom. 🙏

Hey Warren, Juan Manuel from Argentina here. I just wanted to thank you a lot for all of these vids; have been watching for a while now (and subscribed), and I just love the tips and tricks you share. Living in places that are kind of behind in terms of posibilities, ppl can still learn how its done, and use what they've in hand to achieve pretty cool results never the less. I really hope some day we can meet to work and chat, while having a beer, lol...Cheers!

Wow, Warren. I've been following this step-by-step, haven't even gotten to the room mics, and I'm hearing a remarkable difference. Thank you for sharing this and for saving me some money too. I was about to buy a phase correction plug-in, but you've reminded me that it's simply a matter of time. I appreciate you, sir!

I'm salivating over these drums, truly a luxury for me to have this kind of thing to work with. Put the raw tracks up for download on your next mix competition! My workaround for extra wide drums (instead of those room mics) is sending to a separate left and right short verb, and a separate left and right long verb. 4 sends total

Mixing is hard work, a real craft and also a science in itself. I started playing music again after a break of about 20 years. I'm more into electronic music. But I think I can learn a lot from your videos, too. I saw on your website that actually all DAW software solutions do similar things. And all of them also have plugins that you might want to add. Let's see if the same is true for a software called Cakewalk by BandLab. At the moment I can't find my way through it. But there are tutorials for that as well. What would we amateur musicians be without you experts? Thanks for putting so much work into your videos and providing so much knowledge for free.

Hi Warren, thanks a lot for the time you spend teaching us and passing on your experience. I'm a drummer myself and when you were talking about drum replacement with Melodyne, I wondered if you ever compared it with Drumagog. I can do a lot to my drum recordings with my Logic Pro 9 software but the nuances you bring into your own recordings are so refined they beat my results by far. I decided to take it a step further myself and wondered if Drumagog is known to you and/or your community before purchasing it.

Great video indeed! Phase is one of the first and most important things a lot of people forget to analyze from drums to instruments to complex multi mic recordings. Good thing to keep in mind is if you have intentional phasing difference depending on what you are looking fore. Example, overheads and room mics with phase to give more room or a simple acoustic with L-C-R slightly off. Relative phase is what you would correct to give that awesome tight punch yet recording with a correct absolute phase will keep the punch AND open up the stereo field some more. Mic distance and placement is key though. You can research on the different techniques and if you have exotic mic placements like most of us that like to experiment, you can always check by recording some tracks first to analyze if any phase issues.

I know it's been asked a few times but I have a two fold question. A) why use time adjuster when you can just nudge? Doesn't that add unnecessary cpu power? Also, B) Why would you delay the snare to the overheads instead of bringing the overheads to the snare? I know it's subtle but your way would bring the snare behind the beat and cause everything on the grid to have to be delayed... I could be confused though. Your videos are great btw. You're very good at what you do and you're a great teacher. I'm truly having a marvelous time here.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, great questions! A) really uses such a small amount of processing and I like to keep the files where I recorded them. B) I delay the snare a nano second to the overheads which give us an accurate representation of the kit. Every mic is hearing the snare later and later, such as the rooms overheads etc. I hope that helps? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

+Produce Like A Pro Do you ever work in a top down method on drums after you get the polarity as good as you can? Such as getting a unprocessed drum balance, then trying to make them as great as you can on the buss and then doing little fine tuning on individual tracks... That way you are hearing everything in context with eachother... Just a question I have since I've seen some of my favorite engineers work like this
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Zakk Johnson GREAT Question!! Yes that's exactly how I work! Absolutely love your tutorials Warren, thank you for making them! Would you be alright with adding the little circle around the mouse pointer to make it a bit easier to follow it's position, as sometimes I lose where you're pointing with the mouse. Of course, don't worry if it distracts you (your concentration is a lot more important!), but if it's the same for you, it would make following your mouse movements and clicks slightly easier! Should I align snare, toms and kicks to the overheads. Treating the overheads as the center of the mix? Wondering because I once was told to align to the track that shows wave forms first. Since that is the track that replicate the feel of the drummer best? I don't know.

Hey warren! Loved this video. I learned a lot! I have definitely not been checking the phase relationships on drums and have been been less than satisfied with my drum sounds and when I did this my drum sounds came alive!!! SUPER helpful!!!! Thank you for that! Do you do any parallel compression on drums ever? Obviously your drum sound is insanely fat and punchy already but was curious about your take on how you might approach parallel compression and what kind of things you might put on your drum bus??!!! Compression, eq, etc. to make it that much more punchy? Thanks again for these videos! I'm addicted to them! Haha :)

Hi Warren! Regarding digital gain structure: it is only possible to clip plugins if you are working in fixed point, most DAW's and plugins these days are using floating point mantissa, which means that they wont clip internally. It is possible to clip within a floating point DAW if you are using fixed point plugins or if you are using fixed point audio files. That means that as long as you remain in floating point across the board you won't have to worry about digital clipping until you go down to the destination format, at the final stage of mastering. Your recommendation in the video is still valid though, because even if you work in floating point you still have to maintain good gain staging when you're using gain sensitive plugins. e.g. Plugins that emulate hardware are usually calibrated like their hardware counterparts, viz. they have an optimal working sweet spot and are not designed to receive a hot signal. Thanks for the video, have a marvelous time making more! :-) -Sören

Exactly, no matter how hard I tryed in Logic to make a super loud output on one plugin, if the following plugin's output compensates by having a low output they won't clip.

Hey Warren I usually don't comment videos on youtube but I have to say that I really appreciate your videos. It's helping me with my mixes and my productions. I just want to ask you a simple question (maybe a dumb one, dont know): Instead of using the TimeAdjuster, can't you just edit the audio clips and move them back or forwards? Isn't it the same thing ? Thank you a lot

Hi +Gabriel Marques Wow! So glad to be able to help! I personally like to keep the files where I recorded them, but whatever works for you is good, just make sure you duplicate the tracks so you have a playlist that's unedited! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Thank you for the video Warren. Drums sound great. But I have to say, you opened my eyes to a problem i've been having with my mixdowns for a long time, and that is the fact that I am getting this weird distortion through my plugins. Do you think you could elaborate on the trim plugins, when to know how to use them and correctly, and where in the chain its appropriate? Even with my output level having a solid amount of headroom, after masters, I still get noise that sounds like clipping. I think this will be a good solution to that problem!
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Nick Reitman Thanks for the great comment and question! I springily believe in making sure you're not clipping from one plugin to another, so you might have to use a trim on a plug in that doesn't have an output adjustment on it before going into another plugin. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

I'm curious, why do you chose to move the snare top forward to match the overheads, as opposed to moving the overheads back to match the snare top? Isn't the snare top technically more "on the beat" than the overheads, being that it's a closer mic?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Jared Pennock Great question! I'm moving the snare back to the overheads. I'm logically moving the snare back as every other mic is behind it. If I moved the Ohds forward I would then want to move all the other mics forward as well. If it has the effect of laying the snare back a millionth of a second I will take that as a bonus! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

INO, what the other musicians hear (in timing, I mean) is actually closer to the OH's than the close mics. Sound takes some time to travel, so if you want an accurate representation of the organic groove a band has, you should guide the drums' timing by a microphone roughly the same distance as the other band members. In this case the OH's are closer to that ideal distance than the close mics...

I'm currently studying a diploma in sound production, and one of our assignments is to create a piece of music using only a single cycle of a 1k sine wave. and using that single cycle to create a whole band with various tracks/plugins etc. i'd love to see what you could come up with! give it a go! cheers

Hi Vearus08 Haha interesting! Well seeing as you only have one single tone the only music you'll be able to create is rhythmically based! So is it a percussion based exercise? Or are you able to manipulate the pitch using pitch plugins? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
@Vearus08
@Vearus08 9 жыл бұрын
+Produce Like A Pro Pitch manipulation is acceptable , it's just the starting out wave is 1k , what i found amazing was stacking up several and having talk box's do different vowels for harmonies and using lots of long relay, varispeed, and lo-fi plugins to extend the sound and make it larger for a 'kick' - esque sound. I reckon it'd be great for viewers to try too, to see the full extent of their plugins/DAW.

Warren, you really should try Waves In-Phase Plugin. Lining up phase takes half the time as any other way I’ve seen. Including time adjuster. I’m sure if you tried it, you’d never look back. As a drummer, I mix live drums on every track I mix. It saves me 40% of the time any other approach took me. Demo it for 30 seconds, and you’ll probably never use Time Adjuster again. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t measure any room or overhead at all anymore.

Really enjoyed this video and the United drum set up videos. Use of Time Adjuster is a revelation; I usually slip OH and Room to the Bass Batter mic but will give time adjuster a go. Quick question, apologies if inane; your plugins are lighting red individually when internally clipping - is there a Protools setting to get them to behave that way? Does it make a difference whether you're running RTAS, AAX, or TDM versions of the plugins?Many thanks for the insight; I think your ears are spot on! Colin

Warren - terrific and timeless video. QUESTION: I'm just starting to add samples to my drum tracks (kick and snare) - and I'm not really clear about how to do it. I have a single kick for example, and I ended up copying it and placing it in time with each kick hit. Is this how it's down, or is there an easier way? Thanks. (Student of Joe Gilder, by the way!)

I'm not sure why your channel popped up in my feed, but it did. I'm pretty lo-fi (on purpose) and don't have much in terms of recording gear, but I used to and I've spent enough time with friends in various sized studios recording my music and friends' music through out the years to have seen (heard) quite a bit of practical production on many different levels of sophistication.. including light rail studios in San Francisco, which is home to the guys that originally demo' my band on a tascam 8 track r2r in the 1990s (don't remember the console) - let's just say they have up' their game in this millennium to include some pretty hefty names. but ya know ... I think I learned more from this video than anything else I've checked out in years. maybe because I'm tracking a lot of my own drumming and being the engineer and performer kinda makes things daunting at times. especially with limited gear and space (I can't afford my friend's studio anymore. lol). I have lots more to watch !!

Good stuff thank you. Drum dynamics within a track are rarely spoken about or used. In my opinion sometimes a minor level reduction in the verse even in a rock song can make a subtle but important difference. Works live too

Great video Warren. I notived you didn't use any eq to adjust the kick or snare in isolation as most engineers would. Was there a reason for that or was that because you were relying on your samples for that? Also when you have two snares or two kicks do you EQ them as pairs or individually. Thanks

Amazing channel and videos, watched most of them already, so thank you for doing this kind of stuff, really inspiring. I was wondering, when you want to get that bigger than life distorted drums, what channel will you be sending out to the Aux channels, and what processing will you putting on the Aux channel? I also found that sometimes putting an amp simulator on the Hi Hat can get it down an octave and make sound heavy and take some of its shine.
