on the weekends in early spring, i weed by the trail in Belair National Park - to give the little native flowers some breathing space. Have been doing this for twenty years. Only now i notice people stop to talk to me and are very interested in what i am doing. There is a thirst for knowledge, glad i am still here to provide some. We oldies are getting older every year...

Big developments are taking over my area, cutting everything to the ground.I just go and take as many seeds in the fall,and cuttings in the spring.glad to see I'm not the only one.This is the first time I've heard of anyone else doing it🌱💛🌱

Yes! Every Spring I harvest Nettle but in the last few years all 3 of 'my' sites have been decimated by construction. I replanted some Nettle outside a hiking trail🇨🇦Sooke, B.C

It’s so bad in some of those new development sites around sooke. It’s wild they just bulldoze everything to the ground instead of work around native habitat, and ironically then replant grass and non native landscaping plants 🫠

thanks for posting this, great to see this type of salvage happening. Its at least a bit of counterweight to overdevelopment which seems to be swallowing up precious plant ecoysystems in many places.

The volunteer organization I worked with phrased it as an "option of last resort" - salvage is our last thing we can do good for that land once we have failed to save it from development. While I am excited to give the plants a new home, I had to stop and bear witness to the end of that ecosystems existence and feel that gravity too

I have watched your channel since back in the day, as I had aspirations to become a biologist. I have an intense desire to work in the field of ecological restoration. I am so happy to see you adding permaculture to your channel, and even more happy, to see you discussing the benefits of native plants. I haven't finished my journey into biology, and in the meantime, I started a food forest of my own, since nobody in my area does this. Since I take the "perma" part of "permaculture" very seriously, the native edible and beneficial plants of my area, have become integral to my forest strategy. It is like ecological restoration light😄.

Whenever I look up ecosysten restoration, the websites I find talk about it as if it's one whole job. But from what I've seen, thats not the case. Plant nursery workers grow indiginous plants that will be planted later. Researchers gather data to figure out what needs to be changed and how. Managers that keep it all together. Then there are the people that put in the physical wotk to get these things done. People who terriform, people who remove invasives, people who plant, people who reintroduce wildlife back into the area. Am I overthinking things? Aren't these multiple jobs under ecosystem restoration? I find it so hard to find information on the individual aspects of ecosystem restoration. Do you have to have an environmental degree for every single one of these jobs??

Camas themselves as a single species aren't listed as endangered, but camas meadows are one of the most threatened ecosystems in Canada since they're endemic and most have been developed already :( There is not many Garry Oak / camas meadows left sadly. They are incredibly unique and filled with so much history

I started doing this and love it, learning the medicinals here in Washington like purple dead nettle. I found that to help prevent shock, I take wet rags or paper towels to wrap the roots, then at home, water the hole well before planting. 🙏✌️

Thats a good idea, I think I will do this next time. The first time I didn't do anything at all to the roots during transport, this time I tried potting them up on site but found the pots were too difficult to move around so I got less plants. a wet rag would be perfect

Kristina -- That video you made where you describe your most scary hiking experience. Take an ice axe / hammer / tomahawk with you. At 05-00 h, it would be aimed right at Jack's head with tremendous force. It's kill or be killed. Never camp right on the edge of a track. Move in say 100 m off the track. Place a trip-cord about 6 feet clear around each tent attached to a bell for early warning. Have a piece of string tied loosely around a finger so you can alert your partner silently at night using a pre-determined code. No, as long as you can meet the basic physical requirements! A biologist in their mid to late 20s is extremely common, you wouldn't stand out at all I think. I'm 30 now and I still am one of the youngest biologists in my team

Like how far back in history should you go to look for reference plants for a restoration project? Maybe pre-European colonial era?

Retconning history as if “indigenous” people (people who arrived before Europeans) were cultivating and intentionally growing anything. When in reality they just gathered and harvested what they found in the wild. They had no conception of how to grow crops, till, sew seeds, water, etc..
