Can you play on the same island? or only from invites?

Only from invites to other islands. You can't do 2 player couch co-op currently. It's online multiplayer only and two devices are needed. But you can have more than 1 save file on your account.

Every time I send a code it’s invalid and refreshes fast

Oh, that's frustrating, These are the things they typically suggest trying just in case one of them helps- 1) make sure both people are on the latest version of the game (rn 1.3.1 - there were 2 updates this week - mismatched versions cannot play together), I usually have to go all the way to the game page in the app store and wait a moment there before it'll show I can update, 2) NEW in 1.3 go to the main menu, settings, and turn on compatibility mode (new test of hopefully better multiplayer) also make sure internet access or online play whatever it is there is turn on in permissions, 3) make sure you both have stable internet, 4) after you get the code and your friend puts it in you as host have to stay on the code page until they are completely loaded in to your island; 5) if it's still not working, then quitting the game and restarting it (this has actually worked for me) or possibly restarting device and if not then, then maybe compatibility mode off but sounds more likely to work with it on. But it's also peak multiplayer with the new update so it's possible servers are having issues and I've seen a lot of people reporting in the official discord about issues, so if it's still not working a bug report (grab the support code from game and post about it in their discord)seems like a good idea to help them sort out what's going on
