There are several ways to get from San Jose to La Fortuna Alajuela in Costa Rica

🚘 Rent a car
You can rent a car in San Jose and drive to La Fortuna.
It's the fastest way to get there
⏰ Approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours.
You must consider that in your accommodation you have parking.
💰Rental costs vary depending on the company, the rental days and the type of car.

🚙 Go in Uber
You can take an Uber from San Jose to La Fortuna, you should keep in mind that in general the cars in Costa Rica that provide the service are not very large in terms of trunks.
Therefore, if you plan to take this transport, I recommend that there be a maximum of two people, so that they can accommodate luggage.
⏰ Approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours.

🚍 Shared Transportation Shuttle
They are private vans with a capacity between 10 to 12 passengers.
They pick you up in San Jose, Costa Rica at your Hotel and upon arrival in La Fortuna they leave you at your place of lodging.
You must be patient since they begin to pick up all the passengers at their hotels and when they arrive they also go one by one
⏰ Approximately 3 hours to 3 hours and 30 minutes
💰 Approximately 55 USD to 70 USD, the price varies depending on the company you hire, they only receive payments in American Dollars and taxes are added to the rates.

Where do you take the bus that leaves from San Jose to La Fortuna?
The bus leaves from Terminal 7-10

What time does the bus from San Jose to La Fortuna leave?
The bus leaves at 8:40am from Monday to Friday
You must arrive at least 20 minutes in advance or earlier, since the seats are not numbered, therefore, you can have the ticket but you run the risk of going without a seat. I recommend you arrive at 8:00 am
Where to buy tickets from San Jose to La Fortuna?
You can buy them directly at terminal 7 -10 physically
Or the option that I recommend the most is to buy them online
How do I buy bus tickets from San Jose to La Fortuna online?
Enter the page mibus.cr/
In Place of Departure, you can place: Terminal 7 - 10 or you can place San Jose
In Place of arrival, you can place La Fortuna or Terminal La Fortuna
You put the date of your trip
Click on Find Routes
You will see a single route that says San Jose - La Fortuna
On the ticket it appears that the departure time is at 8am (but the bus leaves at 8:40am)
You make the purchase and the QR codes will be sent to you by email so that you can board the bus on the day of your trip
⏰ Approximately 4 hours to 5 hours
💰 Approximately $4,800 Colones with taxes or 9 USD

Recommendations if you travel by bus
The advantage of buying tickets online is that you will have priority in line, since there are two lines in the terminal, one for people who bought the ticket on the spot and another line with priority to leave bags and choose seats in the bus for those who bought online.
I recommend you arrive at 8 am to be one of the first to board the bus.
The bus halfway (two hours after starting the tour) makes a stop at an intermediate terminal to go to the bathroom ($400 colones) and you will find a food court at the bottom with lunches from $3,500 colones
I recommend that you have lunch, this way when you arrive in La Fortuna you will be ready for your other activities.
When you arrive at Terminal de la Fortuna right there you can find a supermarket called MegaSuper

What to do when you get to the fortune?
Once you leave your luggage at the lodging, an activity that you can do in the afternoon and evening is to go to the hot springs, you will find many options.

You can also visit the center, near Parque de la Fortuna and go to dinner.
