I'm one of the coaches for the Seattle Flying Dragons. I'm also a former Yoga instructor. Your comments about pelvic tilting (sitting up straight) is right on the money. Sitting on our low benches, though, makes it pretty difficult for most people. It's almost as if the paddler has to constantly switch back and forth from anterior tilts to posterior tilts with each stroke. That requires a lot of strength and mobility in the entire pelvic region. Sometimes I have my paddlers sit a little more forward on the bench so they are sitting on their sitting bones rather than the meat of the glutes.
