Hi there, I get asked all the time about my guitar tone. People wonder why my 'clean tone' isn't that clean. Here is an explanation of the sound I like to use on my tube/valve amps. Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren

Spot on!!! This really is the beauty of the tube amp and exactly how they were used in some of the greatest songs ever recorded! The greatest guitar effect ever produced IS the volume control on your guitar followed very closely by the tone control on your guitar! Coupled with a brilliant tube amp and one has to look no further than Eric Clapton's work with Cream! A truly stunning use of minimal equipment to get eternal guitar tones! Thank You so much for this as most modern players think I'm completely bonkers for suggesting such an approach! :)

Eleven Rack: I've had one for a couple of years, never really liked it. Then the other night I plugged it into a clean combo and switched it's speaker emulation off et voila, great sounds! The trick seems to be, set the amp sim up, leave lots of headroom, be subtle with the settings, bring an EQ in, then readjust the amp slightly, then the EQ again, THEN add pedals, reverb, delay etc.

You are an amazing guitar player. For the transistor amp owners, I recommend getting a distortion pedal with a tube, 12 AX 7, etc. to achieve a better tone, that is if they can't afford a tube amp. Just a thought. Great guitar playing Warren. Thanks.

I own a few and love the old Marshall JMP & JCM 800 "6 knob" amps. One thing you should consider which you probably already know is clipping the bright cap. It is very easy to do and only takes a minute. It really cures these Marshall amps of those extremely ear piercing highs. You can do it yourself just lift one leg off the bright cap located between the volume and Preamp gain pot. Plenty of pictures on line indicating exactly what cap to clip or unsolder a leg of which is very easy to redo if you wanted to set it back to stock.

Try a universal ac adapter on the guitar pedal set to low voltage to get the dead battery sound. They usually go down to 1.5v lol. If the parts can take it, 12v might sound good. A quality bench power supply could dial it in the sweet spot, and give low noise like a battery.

Well explained and great info Warren. Finding a great solo (over driven) sound that sustains, but does not pierce your ears with the highs (and avoiding muddy-ness) is an elusive thing sometimes in a home studio, even if the studio is fairly well decked out with equipment. Years ago, (1990s) when I did a Jazz Fusion CD, my live room was treated and not so much a problem. Fast forward to today and I am having some issues in an untreated (for the most part) room, even with throwing blankets, cushions and using baffles on the amplifier speaker mic... Phil NYC Area

One problem I've had with tube amps is that you have to turn them up extremely loud to get the tone you want. Sometimes this isn't practical so I use a power attenuator (THD Hot Plate) which sits between the power amp output and the speaker. This allows you to crank the amp and overdrive the tubes thereby getting the tone you want at a reasonable volume.

'So that's why we love tube amps' Haha, awesome and true! Having had solid-state Peavey amps for years, then finally borrowing a co-worker's Marshall Class 5, I was blown away by what I'd been missing for so long. That break-up and thickness Warren mentions increases the dynamics of your playing and all in all it just sounds wonderful. I'm hoping to find a decent (small) tube amp once I get settled into my new home later this month... I've been playing nothing but a $30 acoustic for 10 months and I miss electrics! of course that means I'd have to also buy an electric guitar or ship one of mine to Asia. Maybe it would be fun to do an episode specifically on tube amps, guitars and effects pedals (also, nontraditional use of effects pedals in production)? I feel like there's a tons of stuff I still need to learn about guitars.

That’s interesting that you boosted the bass, lots of forums and groups say to cut the bass, but if you boost the bass to get that think tone then high pass it at the mix stage then it won’t interfere with the bass.
@jacksparrow62185 жыл бұрын
Simon Hetherington I remember when I was younger, always cranking up the bass and treble while pretty much cutting out the middle. (Trying for that heavy metal tone). Now I use the full range of tone, and I love mids. I wish I knew then all the stuff I know now. But, it pretty much just takes time, experience and a little maturity to get anywhere with pretty much anything.

Your playing is articulate and precise. Your demeanor is cheerful and disarming. This is the best series of recording tips I have come across to date. I love it. Can you do one on high-gain electric guitar recording at some point? I am getting really good low to moderate gain (pop/rock) sounds right now using an e609 + Heil Sound PR30 but as soon as I try to get in to high-gain territory (hard rock / metal) it sounds "fizzy" when recorded and I hate it. I can kill some of that "fizz" by going more off-axis but it's still doesn't sound quite right. Thinking about picking up a LDC/ribbon mic to get more "room" sounds because it sounds great in the room. A high-gain video would be awesome!

Hi Warren (or anyone who can help me with this issue), I'm having some issues getting a good tone while recording. Gear: Guitar: Schecter Hell Raiser Diamond Series with EMG active pickups Pedal: BOSS Metal Core ML-2 AMP: Crate GT212 Combo amplifier MICS: Two Digital Reference DRI100 Super-Cardioid Pattern Mics (I own 3 but I'm using 2) MXL V63MBP condenser mic that I use to get more of the room noise I suppose. MIXER: Yamaha MW2 USB Mixing Studio Mixer. INTERFACE: M-AUDIO M-TRACK plus interface DAW: Pro-Tools Express. ISSUE: Now I know I'm using low budget gear, but I'm hoping to upgrade during this new year. My main problem is trying to record heavy guitars, drop C tuning. I just get a super muddy sound, I can't turn anything up without it clipping and becoming really distorted. I've tried every position on the left speaker and the right, I've tried micing the back as well and it's just too muddy sounding. But if I record the clean channel, it's exactly what I would want for a clean tone. If you guys have any tips to help me, please help me. Please respond soon. Thank you!
@Producelikeapro8 жыл бұрын
Hi +James Boldi Thanks for the question! Wat is the issue you are having? Is there too much Bass? If so try adjusting the amp settings first before anything else. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
@JamesBoldi8 жыл бұрын
It's not that its too bassy, It's just muddy and it takes a lot of gain through the mixer and interface in order to get it to be loud enough to hear. I use a distortion pedal through the clean channel. I've adjusted the clean channel to Low's are at 10 o'clock (going clockwise), mid's I've tried at 11-12 and high's at 2 o'clock. My Metal Core ML-2 Pedal, the lows are at 10 and high's at 1 o'clock. Since it's a heavy distortion pedal I roll the distortion down a bit, practically zero. I know the amp I'm using is a Crate, and is a low budget amp. So I understand why I could be getting this. If you prefer I can record audio and post it for you to hear. Thank you for responding! You're the first to respond. Have an awesome day!
@Producelikeapro8 жыл бұрын
Hi +James Boldi Ok I see. I usually just drive the amp and rarely use distortion pedals, the ma distortion usually sounds best to me. How is the ma distortion? Do you not like it? Sometimes a huge amount of distortion just make the guitar sound thin/muddy and small! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
@JamesBoldi8 жыл бұрын
Well, going into my Yamaha mixer is when the volume and tone is lost. And I've tried boosting more highs and mids. If I turn up the volume it begins to clip. And if I leave it at low volumes it just isn't a clear reaction of the amp. And trying to EQ in Protools Express makes it clip again.

hey thank you for posting this, I don't know if you can help but I'm suffering from a cable buzz issue, is there anyway you could do a video on removing noise after recording. that would be amazing unless u already have something. also if its possible to fix the scratchy sounds when the Mic clips. man that would be really useful for a lot of diy artists with less than ideal gear

Hi Warren, I'm so grateful I have found your channel. You are so experienced and have a very nice way of teaching the things you know. Thanks for that. I have a question about your guitar volume. Do you open up your guitar volume to the max and then find the sweetspot of the amp? Or do you set it lower and then find the sweetspot? Thanks in advance, Justin
@Producelikeapro9 жыл бұрын
Hi +juastino Aw shucks thanks!! Glad you enjoy the videos! Yes I use the volume full up and set the tone on the amp, then only adjust the volume on the guitar to change the tone. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

WOW! You actually reacted!! Unbelievable Warren. I feel blessed :) I can only imagine how much work this is for you. Thanks for the great tip. I have a Kemper and really love the sound of of the Ampfactory profiles. Now I know how I can get the sweetspot working. I would love to know more about your songwriting techniques. Especially on how you decide what keys you use to get the best out of your vocalists. I'm producing an album with 8(!) vocalists and struggle to write songs that are within their reach. Thanks again Warren. All the best to you and your family. Justin - The Netherlands

Is it better to do post production effects by way of plugins or pre by way of pedals?

Warren these are really great videos. I am wondering how you are running the cabs from the marshall heads. Are they located in iso elsewhere in the house?
@Producelikeapro9 жыл бұрын
Hi fixfinance thanks for the compliment, I really appreciate it! The Marshall cab is in a separate overdub room. You can see the overdub room on a couple of my other videos. Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren

Guitar tone's comes from the guitar and the amp and mic placemennt. Sort that out and your recordings will sound amazing . Spend time experimenting with mic placement. Control mid range it kills your ears. Warren, love you man keeping it real.

If you only have tubes in one stage is it better to have it in the preamp or power amp? and why?
@VictorVGeiGer19 жыл бұрын
Hay Warren, Epic guitar skillz!. I've had a hard time getting good guitar tone for years now. Recording a real amp has always been a volume issue for me so I turned to vst amps but I could never really get what I though was a great tone, especially with high gain, through vst. That was until I tried BIAS from Positive Grid. It's a tube amp simulator combined with impulse response tech they call amp match. IMO it sounds epic, I'd love to get your opinion on it if you've tried it. Thanks for the great tutorials man.

Aw shucks thanks very much Victor Geiger! Yes I love playing guitar, just wanted to be Brian May or Jeff Beck growing up! Haha still do! I will have to try out BIAS, that sounds amazing! Thanks for the tip!! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren.

That Bias plug in will bring a core i5 computer with 8 gb of ram to a standstill. It does sound good, but is a real resource hog

Hi warren I'm Mauro from Argentina. I'm a big fan of your videos and saw them a lot of times, I'm getting started with my home recording and getting good guitar tones and I have one doubt about a video you made for getting guitar full and fat tones. I founded your example of setting the amp for playing soft for clean tones and hard for more distorted tones really helpful but my question is about more distorted tones such Buckcherry, Slash, etc.. More hard rock style... How do you think I can find that sweet spot for full and fat tones ? Thanks in advance Warren !
@Producelikeapro7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kreiser13, thank you ever so much!! I would say set your amp to a crunch tone and drive it from a pedal like a gain pedal! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
