How to get GREAT overdrive tones at low volume.

A common problem with guitarists is trying to get a loud clean tube amp (like the Fender silverface and blackface vibrolux) to overdrive at low volume. This video will demonstrate how to use your guitar volume and some simple pedals to get a great overdrive sound at a low volume without having to resort to turning up your amp. You can then in turn use the principles taught in this video to get great tones at any volume you wish. The amp in this video is a 1972 Fender Vibrolux but you can use these concepts on ANY amp. The guitar is a Fender 52 reissue telecaster. The pedals are a Way Huge Green Rhino, MXR 6 band eq, and Spark clean boost.

Hello, I appreciated this video! Just wondering if you know what the source of the big hum in the background was? This happens to me too with my gear and I never know what to do about it, so when you heard the recording did you ever track down the source of the hum? Thank you

Hey there. The hum is most likely from the single coil pickups in the guitar. If you are using single coils as well (like in a strat or tele) that is probably the reason.

Try a JOYO American Sound pedal, less than $40 or so. Has 3 band eq (low, mid and high knobs), output Level knob, a Drive knob and a knob labeled Voice. It kind of mimics an overdriven Tweed or Blackface Deluxe Reverb amp depending on the Voice setting. Sounds great and does all that these 3 pedals do, very cheap and again, it sounds great. I use it with a Deluxe Reverb 65 RI, or you can use it as an amp direct into a DAW or board.

Now I take the “Kelly” and Plug it into my 15 watt Mini Blackface modeler amp,…the out into the 100 watt Hartke and blow the dishes outta my neighbors cabinet….. I’m too old to have reasonable volume considerations… 🤪 What’s that pinkish thing next to the bridge spare chewing gum???

hahaha yeah man... its fun to make noise! That thing in the bridge is a bunch of pieces of broken picks. i had to wedge them in there to keep the saddles in place. my high E string was slipping off the FRETBOARD... good old fender quality control
