I'm also an English major looking into digital marketing 😊

I'm a Marketing student on my 2nd year, however it's definitely possible in this area to get a job without pursuing a degree, and you can feel it more when it comes to Digital Marketing. And it becomes from the fact that is a whole new recent area and the Uni actually still cant deliver the most recent content to their students about this new thing, so when someone wants to become a Digital Marketeer, that person only can find Digital Marketing courses or any content related to outside of the University, at least this is happening in Portugal, but on the rest of the world probably is the same as well. Now about the switching careers topic: the recruiters are not only looking for degrees anymore because to work *in a big company, in any part of the world, we should be able to learn everyday and be able to work with our colleagues as a team. Therefore, soft-skills are needed to perform well in a company because with these soft-skills you are going to be adaptable to a new reality and learn all the hard-skills.

That's a very interesting subject. To be honest, I've been in this business for a very long time and I think you do need to have some legitimate experience (rather than no experience). Now, it's possible to pick up that knowledge through a variety of means, on the job experience, course free courses, more experience and so on, but it is important to have experience rather than just rely on blagging it or AI.
@johanna.helenaАй бұрын
Definitely agree with everything you mentioned - hence why my main tips are gaining experience & free courses! AI knowledge is definitely a big one in my opinion but I also work in tech in London

"I am specialising in digital marketing with a focus on addressing the unique challenges faced by individuals with dyslexia. I believe this is a crucial area that remains underrepresented, despite its significance. As someone who has dyslexia, I have a deep understanding of the specific obstacles that this community faces, particularly in navigating digital content. My goal is to bridge this gap by creating more accessible and inclusive digital marketing strategies. This will not only improve the online experience for people with dyslexia but also demonstrate the untapped potential of this market, which many businesses overlook. By specialising in this field, I aim to bring attention to the importance of inclusivity in digital spaces and ensure that everyone, regardless of their learning differences, has equal access to information and opportunities."

quick question... marketing is lowkey something i'm tempted to explore, that being said i do expect AI tech to influence the industry in the foreseeable future. are you yet seeing any effects of that in your field and are you taking an precautionary steps to avoid being laid off?
@johanna.helena3 ай бұрын
totally get your concern, here's my take: we need humans to prompt AI and at the end of the day, we are still marketing for other humans who seek human experiences and want to connect. marketing will change no doubt, so I'd focus on jobs that cant be easily automated like creative strategy, content or brand management
@onenation95104 ай бұрын
Do you think digital marketing gives you equal or more satisfaction than the investigative nature of journalism? One thing you didn't mention (it's not a criticism) but journalism is very social class based in England. If you went to the right private school it's easier to get internships because of strong alumni links to certain organisations/companies.
@johanna.helena4 ай бұрын
marketing is definitely less satisfying, but I was really craving more stability + I still work as a freelance journalist so I can scratch that itch 👀 your comment re class is very true, I also noticed this! I always google feature journalists and 80% of their parents have a Wikipedia page…

I would like to make a career shift into digital marketing. I am currently taking the Google Digital Marketing course. However, the issue I face is that I lack real hands-on experience, and I am uncomfortable with showing my face or making videos with my face on social media to create examples of my work that I could later present in a job interview for a social media manager position. Do you have any suggestions for alternatives?
@johanna.helena2 ай бұрын
depends which part of marketing you're interested in, is it social media marketing? I think you can also create great content without showing your face, maybe more on the educational side. I'd also really recommend finding an internship, perhaps a remote one for more flexibility. good luck!

I was In your position and did the exact same course and now have a marketing job , what I recommend doing is doing mock-up for companies that already exist and doing case studies and doing hypothetical work that portrays ur different skills ( ex: making a website page, making a hypothetical marketing campaign, showcasing ur content creation skills for a certain brand you like (make a hypothetical insta post or tiktok etc…)

Hi, thank you so much for the insights! i think you talking about how to get into the job and maybe also your particular tasks etc is so interesting. I have a question for you mayb you could give me a tip :) Do you need statistics knowledge for digital marketing? Cause i am studying communciation and thinking of taking the statistics course (only have very basic sttistics knowledge so far). I think it'll be a bit of a struggle but i was thinking that since marketing is so much based on data and the analysis thereof, statistics is probably useful? What do you think:)
@johanna.helena3 ай бұрын
I also had statistics in my MA but haven’t used it in my career so far - I’m in creative marketing though so you might need it if you go into the more analytical/numbers side of things! I‘d say go with the courses that interest you most cause that’s what you‘ll hopefully end up doing work wise!
