@@arkinyte13 Lupin is French; though there are uncomfirmed rumours that he's partially Japanese. His popularity in Italy stems from the fact that his most-used vehicle is the little Fiat500. It's one of the most iconic cars of its time, similar to the original VW Beetle or the Austin Mini Cooper. These were 'cheap' little cars for everyday people, which is why the public connected so well with the rich gentleman thief, who put his trust in the same little car they did.

I watched Castle of Cagliostro, and just kinda fell in love with the series. No matter how dark the series gets, it never feels like it takes itself _too_ seriously-it's fiction, and Lupin takes full advantage of that.
@SNKJay
@SNKJay 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's true. I always felt some of the content in part 1 (namely the sexual violence) being played as a gag bothered me, despite it never being taken seriously, but I see what your point is. Yeah, that's the beauty of Lupin and why I can come back to many movies/specials and have fun watching them (although the episodes of Part 1 and manga especially I'm not too fond of)
@SNKJay
@SNKJay 3 жыл бұрын
@Michael Taylor You are absolutely correct. Furthermore, Part 5 states in red jacket and pink jacket episodes that yes, these clearly took place in the past. I worded my point incorrectly, but the one I tried (failed) to make was: Unlike typical anime that have timelines like DBZ or Naruto, that have past villains/concepts that play a major role in understanding the fundamental story, Lupin doesn't require as much knowledge of the past. Rather, they immerse you in the stories and heists you get to watch. At the time I made this video, I didn't word this right on accident. My mistake. I plan on making a follow-up video to this one, that goes more in-depth and fixes up some of the mistakes I made when talking about this show. Mr X in Part 2 coming back, along with the wording of the artists, declared Part 2 to take place 5 years after Part 1. Afterwards, it's debatable when Parts 3,4,5, and woman called Fujiko Mine take place. All the "parts" series (from 1-5) DO in fact take place in the same universe, something I misspoke in the video. The case I tried to make was that a newcomer could jump into Part 2 OR Part 4, since Part 4 is more of a soft reboot and doesn't rely on past gimmicks that happened in previous decades (but if the viewer knows these things, they are rewarded). You are absolutely correct though, I messed up on this point, in my attempt to try and make a universal statement about how easy it is to get into Lupin I ended up butchering that idea entirely and saying something false. My apologies :)
@SNKJay
@SNKJay 3 жыл бұрын
@Michael Taylor Yeah, I think Princess Clarisse from Cagliostro also shows up at the very last episode for a small cameo, there were a lot of callbacks to previous parts to try and show the timeline, but said timeline isn't necessary to understand for newcomers. Still though, yeah, there is a timeline. Just not super big, but I should def make another video and talk more about that while also correcting myself haha

That's awesome! I'd love to visit Italy someday, just to see how popular it is haha! But yeah I believe you, Italy, France, and Japan are where Lupin is popular. Strange how unpopular it is in the states, especially considering how much it borrows from the west (i. e. James Bond). Fanmade movies? I gotta check those out now haha! "Sigarette alla Jigen" heh, that's funny, but also cool! I wonder if Lupin got popular in Italy thanks to Castle of Cagliostro, and/or if it was just because that side of the world in general found popularity with this show. Either way, thanks for the info, definitely interesting!

@@SNKJay Hello, from France here. I would say that Lupin has been few and far between here, the early series (the second if I remember) did get broadcast in the late 80s under the name "Edgar de la Cambriole" (which means Edgar the thief") but then a big hiatus until part IV and V which we did get regularly. And even then, only a 50-ish épisodes out the 155 were subbed. Definitely more popular in Italy though, like Urusei Yatsura; although we did get most of that show from 1988 to 1992, there has been no broadcast since 1998, and no French language release of any stuff besides the movies since 2003, whereas in Italy you can get Italian subbed Blu Rays!

Yup, those 3 films were incredible, I'm amazed at how good they are actually haha. Blood Spray in particular, but the tone they go for, the dark muddy atmosphere SCREAMS Monkey Punch and what he originally wanted, it's amazing. Definitely a more nicher part of Lupin, it's too dark for some people but I love it. If you want to understand better the cgi film, I would suggest watching more Lupin films (like Castle of Cagliostro). Since you've already seen the super serious side of Lupin, everything else you'll watch will be hella light-hearted, but that's okay they're still great. Voyage to Danger is terrific, Island of Assassins is pretty dark (but not as dark as woman called fujiko mine movies)

Yeah, Part 2 and Part 4 are your best places to start, but you could watch the woman called Fujiko Mine series too, or my personal fav, Castle of Cagliostro. Part 3 I wouldn't recommended starting with, just my opinion. Part 5 is connected to part 4, so for consistency sake (there's hardly much consistency within Lupin already as it is) it would make sense to see 4 before 5 in my eyes. Part 2 kinda gives you everything in one, but it's got older animation, so if you aren't for that, part 4 is your best bet. If you don't want to watch a tv show and just want to view the movies, Castle of Cagliostro gives you a full picture of everyone in action. imo

Something I've noticed about Lupin, there is different takes like James Bond when it switches between goofy (Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Brosnan) and dark (Dalton, Craig). In fact, you can tell Lupin's creators LOVED Bond (hell, some dubs even mention James Bond, to the point where Fujiko meets a Connery-like former agent, Walther and all). Castle of Cagliostro had different dubs. One I remember most was on VHS back when Lupin was voiced by Bob Bergen (who voices several Looney Tunes characters, as well as being a former voice double for Mark Hamill in various Star Wars games).

I see it as underrated in the sense that it doesn't have the same appreciation as other anime that have far surpassed the franchise in popularity (with namely Shounen anime like DBZ and Bleach). It's iconic, just not as big in America from what I've seen. I wouldn't be shocked if Goku or Ichigo were more recognizable to children in America than Lupin is, however, I too agree with you in that I grew up with Lupin. I saw Castle of Cagliostro and instantly loved it, however it would be years later in my late teens when I finally got into all Lupin stuff. It's hard to find in America, aside from Toonamie and Adult Swim, and isn't as advertised as more popular anime.

I just find the online presence for the show ridiculously small, besides Twitter I can't find any other big place where fans talk about this show. But eh, my knowledge of anime is limited, I just assumed Lupin is underrated because people have larger spaces for the things that Lupin went on to inspire. The more recent shows have a low viewer rating in America especially when compared to Attack on Titan, Bleach, DBZ, Naruto, etc. Shounen anime, and that's for understandable reasons, but I refuse to like it in any capacity. Its all a blur, but I still remember cool, memorable sounding titles from episodes that aired on cartoon network: "50 ways to leave your 50ft lover" - "Lair of the Land Shark" - "Buns, guns, and fun in the sun"

Lupin’s stealth influence throughout the media was HUGE! There are 2 other works that have “Lupin III” written all over them: - “Final Fantasy IX” - An 80’s anime called “Galactic Cyclone Braiger”. This show did the whole “Lupin in Space” thing before Lupin 8th and Cowboy Bebop. It probably also influenced bebop because music is important to the series, and the MC’s past is similar to Spike’s.

My first introduction was the cgi movie and I’ve been binge watching all the Lupin movies and they’re all so enjoyable and the cast are so charming. Currently my fav is Goemon’s Blood Spray, I loved the dark tones of the movie and it was very different from the rest☺️ But Castle of Cagliostro is also at the top

It's kinda surprising in part V approaching the finale when Goemon and Lupin made a duel as promised, the scene shows flashbacks during their time in between Part 1-2. With subtle changes.
@SNKJay
@SNKJay 3 жыл бұрын
So, yeah there is a clear reference to those past parts in that episode (animated masterfully to fit in with the modern animation I may add) that sort of suggest the possibility of each show happening in the same universe. It's subtle, as besides that episode, some things are either left open or isn't explicity stated when in the supposed timeline events take place. The Goemon and Lupin duel was beautiful, but also pretty tragic :_ Still entertaining though

The new movie (Lupin III the First, 2019) is really good, and I think it's a nice introduction to the series as a whole, like Castle Cagliostro. Now that my gf and I saw it in theatres, we're looking to get into the series. I like that you don't need to know their full backstories to get the context of it. It really just works as it's own standalone thing. Rest in Peace to Monkey Punch, the man who started so much with this goofy thief and his pals.

Yup! The CGI film was impressive in that regard, a lot of my friends finally got into Lupin thanks to that. It does stink that aside from Castle of Cagliostro, the CGI film, and some others, the rest of the Lupin films that have come out over the years are difficult to obtain, let alone watch. I'm thankful Monkey Punch made this character, although I wasn't the biggest fan of Lupin's darker nature. That being said, I liked how Monkey Punch's vision leaked into the Woman Called Fujiko Mine series, that show is great and I like all the specials that came out for it. Lupin is a very timeless franchise, and a lot of things work as a standalone, it's great really

Although I wasn't born in the 90's, around my middle school age that's when I discovered Lupin Part 4 after Cowboy Bebop from Toonami on a late weekend night. I will admit at first, I didn't know what was going on since I was very curious, but then that curiosity turn into admiration for the series as a whole. I felt like I discovered a hidden gem since I hardly hear anyone talk/discuss about the show. Nowadays, I actually talk to my friend about the series and we started watching together. You wouldn't believe how exciting & suprised I was hearing that Lupin The 3rd was the main inspiration for Cowboy Bebop! :0 That sounds like a dream come true! My usage of "underrated" is admiteddly in poor taste. The intention of the video was more for the shounen/mainstream anime fans who only swear by DBZ or Bleach, I'm sure many are aware of Lupin but many people (I know) aren't down to watch any of the newer content and/or learn about Lupin's impact on games or shows they like to death (Person 5, Cowboy Bebop, etc.). Again, upon self-reflection of this video I made almost a year ago, yeah, it's a bit jaded in that sense. I just naturally assume since in the West there's no big forum or community (not notably as big or noiceable as again, things that were later inspired by Lupin like Persona) it's an "underrated" anime. I'm debating on changing the title to something different, since it's clear my click-baity title has done it's work haha I'm thankful for all the views and attention I'm getting now

You are absolutely correct. I messed up here big time, I didn't want to confuse newcomers but I probably should've been honest. In Part 2 as well, they mention how it takes place 5 years directly after part 1, and Part 5 at the end suggests it's part of a later series of adventures that Lupin has with his comrades. I won't spoil, as you graciously chose not to here, but yes I know exactly what you're talking about in Part 5. I still find it kinda silly the creators don't make a timeline official or put much attention towards that, but I suppose this isn't an Epic Fantasy or anything -- the writers will never run out of story ideas for Lupin the third, and continuity so far isn't on there mind, they're just out there to deliver quality stories, which they've done for a while now!

I'll share my little italian experience of one of the reasons of why Lupin III is so widely popular here in Italy among young generations: From middle school onwards, school ends at either 12:00 or 13:00, and you go home to eat and relax before studying or doing other activities. The routine that most young kids had was to go home, and while eating turning on the TV. One of the most successful blocks was a three-punch of cartoons usually just called "after-lunch cartoons" between 13:30 (after the news) and 15:00 (low share timing usually with irl sitcoms) that consisted in cartoons aimed to young adults, and some anime. Thus, every day from Monday to Friday a good 85% of italian kids would tune in to "Italia 1" (channel 6) to watch, in order, two animes and one american sitcom/cartoon (Simpsons/Family Guy/Futurama/etc); and of those two animes, one of them was always Dragon Ball, and the other Lupin III (although they were later replaced by other anime like One Piece or Naruto, moved from the "16:00 block" to the "after-lunch" block). This made so that any kid 11 or older watched at least some of Lupin III, and thus it was ingrained in our collective memory as one of the shows of our childhoods. I don't know if this block has remained the same (I think not), but it ran for more than 14 years spanning the whole 2000s so the entire 90s generation and good part of the 00s has been affected. I cannot talk for older generations, but other comments have explained their time periods well.

The Woman Called Mine Fujiko was my starting point and it turned out great for me. The noir soundtrack and impressive artstyle definitely help. The overly mature first episode was a shock but pairing it with the accompanying films (Jigen's Graveston, Goemon's Blood Spray, Fujiko's Lie) give an extremely good look at each character I feel. Castle of Calgiostro is definitely a great intro if you watch any anime as it can just be enjoyed as a Ghibli. But You are missing what I consider another obvious introduction. Lupin Episode 0: First Contact. Which acts as an origin story of sorts.

@@SNKJay Yes! There is so much Lupin haha. Pink jacket was the only really old one I missed. Most of the ones I've watched recently were specials and the amazing CGI film! I find pink jacket started off "wanting" to get back to its roots of green because there are some serious/sad moments in the first few episodes. Also some of the (bad) designs like Lupin and Goemon have a serious look to them. But it also seemed like they wanted to do something new as well which were things I missed like having 1) actual Lupin theme song and 2) the typewriter part for the episode title. When it comes to recommending I find it depends if the person can watch something that is "old." which is why I would still recommend pink because the animation and art quality actually still looks really good today. Where as red holds up okay (not counting Miyazaki's episodes, still great ha) and green's animation is really stiff but the art is great. I think what hurts pink jacket the most is the inconstant tones and designs (more so in the beginning) which is probably why people get turned off by it. I think pink jacket finds it's groove more later in the series and then it becomes much more enjoyable but it certainly is the goofiest of Lupin's. I would still recommend all the jackets & WCFM haha I would agree with Castle of Cagliostro because that also holds up extremely well for 79! Also that was my first Lupin haha.

@@JordyToons Pink Jacket in all honestly is more of deep study of the character. They try so many new things with the character, differing art styles, but it's preferred you have some background with who Lupin is before watching -- even if it happens to be your first part, I find it the hardest to get into. Good on you! I think pink jacket is still great, I can't admit there's ever a "bad" Lupin series (maybe some OVA specials I didn't like too much) but for the most part pink jacket pays it's dues to the character rather well. I feel like in the future I may plan on making more in depth videos on each part, how the production turned out behind the scenes, and what each part brought to the overall franchise, as well as how it paid its respect to the original source material (manga).

@@SNKJay Yeah Pink might not be the best one to "start" with but it should be watched some time early on. Again I think it depends on the person if they like fun, goofy or serious tones and if they're able to watch something old. I find people are generally turned off by how old they are. I would barely recommend any of the ova's, specials or films. Personally for me I actually love green jacket & WCFM but I think the franchise works best in red jacket formula where it's the "fun adventures." It does bum me out that more people don't talk about Lupin !

@@JordyToons Yup, that's the role of the videos I make. I hope I can help spread awareness, with the little views I have haha. I'll just end up making Lupin videos, alongside other video essays I choose to make. Lupin's too good, and there's not enough love :( although the cgi film's gonna rock the states hopefully :)

Thanks! Yeah, I'd say it's tricky just finding the material. Hopefully DiscoTek media, or whoever distributes Lupin media finds a way to re-release all the old and classic stuff on blu ray. Part 2 is the pinnacle of the series for me, all the zany action and adventures are contained in those 155 episodes, more than enough for me haha but I also enjoy a lot of the modern stuff too.

That's awesome! By first movie, you mean Mystery of Mamo, or the Lupin the First CGI film? I assume the former, but either way, that's great to hear!

you said it right, in Europe and especially here in Italy the show is historically a must-see through different generations, I'm 53 and I was a big fan of each series, starting from the green jacket back in the late '70s. Talking about the series blue jacket, you forgot to mention it was located totally in Italy, here in Italy, it is known and titled as "the Italian adventure".Lupin the third it's unknown in North America but in Japan and Europe, and most of all Italy, it's one of the biggest anime franchises ever after Mobile suit Gundam.
