Hii Amanda I’m going to be freshmen in highschool in a few months and I was wondering are there any other tips you can give me to excel and higher my chances of getting in UCLA when I apply
@AmandaMagana

meet with your school academic counselor often to pick schedules and to make sure you are hitting all the requirements while creating a schedule that is do-able! I think a lot of kids make the mistake of trying to take 6aps and be the president of 3 clubs and it makes it really hard to do well in all of this. Remember you are a student first and colleges DO care about the GPA (although definitely not the only thing of course) so I would make this your main focus and don't take classes that you know you won't do well in but make sure to challenge yourself as well I didn't take a whole load of APs and still got into good schools! Also, invest in a planner...it has been my best friend since high school and I'm obsessed with my Passion Planner! I wouldn't worry too much about selecting colleges until you are at least a junior and have a better idea of your GPA and which schools you realistically have a chance of getting into. Good luck! If I could do it all over again I would remember to have fun and enjoy time with your family because after high school time really flies and I always remember how important family and friends are! Don't stress yourself out too much and remember to take time for self-care (whatever that means for you!) Hope this helps xx Amanda

Hi. I have some questions about UCLA. 1. Do you have to pay extra money to get a dorm room with its own bathroom. Cause I know some dorms don't have private bathrooms. 2. How much money are the meal plans. 3. Are there any close stores nearby if you want to buy like grocerys and food. 4. Do you have a better chance to get into UCLA if you are involved in sports, because I'm a level 10 gymnast, and that's the level college gymnast compete. So, I was just wondering? 5. What are some of the activities UCLA has durning the week. 6. Do you stay at your dorms on the weekends.. You do you do other things? 7. Would you ever have class on a weekend, such as Saturday or Sunday? 8. How many food choices are there for restaurants on campus? 9. What's your major? 10. What's an easy way to get scholarships! Please and thanks❤️

To Ismanhan: A 3.5 is just to be qualified...I can guarantee you the great majority of accepted applicants either have a 4.0 or above. I've literally heard of maybe one person who got in with 3.5, and their SAT and ACT were near perfection. SO if you think you know so much more than me, get your 3.5 and just click out of my video and let the cards fall where they may :)

To Catti-brie Pepper: CLEARLY you don't have enough knowledge to be attempting to make assumptions on a subject you know little about. just an FYI when you take an AP course in high school, and pass with a C or above, your GPA gains an extra point. Therefore if you take all the A-G courses with Ap's and get all A's, you get a GPA OVER a 4.0, thus the 4.3 thanks for attempting to discredit me though.

Is this considered a "sob story"? My mother who is an alcoholic and an abusive parent, tortured me as a child and did not fulfill the basic responsibilities of a parent. All throughout my childhood and most of my teenage years I was forced to learn to fend for myself and figure out ways to find food, because I would not be fed at home. Due to these reasons, I was not able to join many clubs and assume leadership roles because often times participating in clubs at my school meant that I would have to buy t-shirts or supplies for the clubs, which I did not have any money for. I was also forced to leave school right when it ended as opposed to staying after school to take care of my alcoholic mother. However, when I was six, I understood that although I couldn't change my current situation, I would need to try my hardest in academics so that I could change my future. I believe through these experiences, I was able to mature more quickly as a person and learn to persevere through tough situations and difficulties. Currently, I am still stuck in this same situation, but I know there is a light down the road and I won't give up now. (Obviously this is not exactly what I'm going to write exactly but a general summary...if anyone can offer me any tips on how to improve this, it'd be a great help🙏🏻)

I just received the UCLA devious yesterday, and I got denied. I couldn't comprehend why when everything I had was good. My GPA is a 4.2, I have been taking the highest classes at my school, I am ASB president, and have dedicated 250 hours of scientific research to a science fair project that I took all the way to state and was the first person from my school to do such a thing in its 125 years. Now, I realized that it's because of my major. I applied under engineering and that's super impacted. I really wish I could've seen this earlier and applied under something like biology.

+Faith My body's collapsing under so much pressure. I'm in tenth grade and because of multiple reasons ,the major one being me transferring to homeschooling and having several misunderstandings there, I am behind in classes. I'm currently taking Algebra 1, Biology, English, U.S History, Homeroom, and an unimportant class exclusive to my school. As you can see my classes aren't to par with my grade level. I'm taking Geometry next semester and am going to try to finish it in the summer. I don't know where to cram in more classes or even which to do so with. I've asked my counselor to give me whichever AP's possible next semester too. I'm going to go back to conventional high school so that I'll feel more comfortable being in in-school extracurricular activities.What are my chances? I'm sorry for bothering you but I'm drowning in my anxiety.

Qualmify I don't know what to tell you. I was not very good of a student in high school. Meaning I didn't took all this ap courses since I was consided an ESL student. I am so surprised you are knowing your college career, a very head start. I will recommend a high school to never give up. Is good for you to try honors and ap classes but remember that as student who also takes regular courses. The best way is to work hard and get the great gpa you need since you will be going to university from high school. I am community college student. But if I had the knowledge and head start, I will love to be in an university. Also, take the SAT and ACT tests in consideration. Yes, a lot of pressure. Please don't try, but talk to a counselor. Tell them what is your college plan. You want to prepared yourself and be ready by taking the courses you will need. I will recommend you to take sciences, math courses since your major is biology. It contains a lot of these material.

She covered majors, but it is VERY crucial in admissions, especially for engineering majors. You can be the top of your class, with some great scores, and barely have a chance. I applied to UCLA as an aerospace engineering major this year, which is impacted, and had an unweighted GPA of 4.0 and Weighted GPA of 4.6 (Val), with decent test scores, and I was rejected. They are looking at the top of the top, and you are competing with thousands of equally qualified, if not better applicants, so tread carefully. Definitely personal statements and extracurriculars will boost your application and make it shine amongst others, so keep that in mind. If you feel that this is the school for you, and you are afraid your major will prevent you from that, apply undeclared, and then work your way into that major when you are in. That was, in my mind, my mistake for not seeing. Just a little reflection from my own experience this past year. But Go Tritons (UCSD-bound), but also Bruins.

no one said it was all about numbers, these are ballpark figures from many years ago and I did touch on the fact that there are several different aspects, but it is untrue to imagine the first cut they make isn't based on numbers because it probably is so numbers are one of the most important things to worry about and it would be silly to just say that you can get in with a good essay...most people won't get in if they don't meet the basic admit requirements they give an average freshman profile on their website avg gpa is a 4.3 take a look at that not saying there aren't special cases, but 9/10 times you won't get in with scores under the stats they list on their website I don't want to set people up for failure.

A lot of people were worrying about GPA. Schools have different grading systems so a 4.6 GPA could be a 4.1 somewhere else. Also, colleges take into account the toughest classes that your school offers, so if your school only has Honors classes and you took those classes, you will probably be fine. I took 6 APs junior year, and am taking 5 APs senior year. None my freshman or sophomore year (took all honors though). My school is pretty competitive, so it offers alot of AP classes. That still doesn't guarantee a spot in any college.

I really want to go here but, my sophomore year I had a few A's and mostly B's and C's my grades where horrible. I was depressed and my anxiety increased extremely. My gpa went from a 3.4 in freshmen year to about a 2.6 and now as a junior i'm trying so hard to bring up my gpa but even then I'm only taking one Ap class this year and it's my first Ap class. The only thing I've been doing for four years is art. (I don't want to do art as my job though). It's so hard for me to get good grades especially since my school district's curriculum is extremely hard and fast paced.I don't want to be going to a smaller college since I'm so used to being at a big high school. No one informed me of these college standards when I came into highschool. My school never told us about how many colleges look for kids who are in clubs and ap courses. I didn't even know what clubs my school had until like tenth grade and by the time I knew, it was too late to join. :(

you should write about your anxiety in your personal statement
@boopboop9356
@boopboop9356 8 жыл бұрын
And improve your GPA and start volunteering or doing something now that's better than nothing. and in your personal statement write how you had anxiety and got bad grades BUT you managed to deal with it and got better grades - the grades you get now are up to you. This shows them character and improvement, and it'll show them that you can handle your anxiety and still do school, which even a lot of high school kids with good grades struggle with when they go to college

Amanda Magana You want to pick a JC with a relatively high transfer rate to the UC system. I attended El Camino and, at the time, only Santa Monica transferred more students to UCLA. Talking to a counselor on a regular basis is very important because you need to make sure you're taking the right courses to fulfill both your GE and the lower level requirements for your major. Other than that, avoiding the riff-raff because most JC students are not very serious and never transfer.

UCLA has been my dream school for the longest time. My freshmen year I was on the cheer team and I've maintained 3.8/3.9 g.p.a I didn't do any clubs or AP classes because cheer took up much of my time as well as at home responsibilities. Sophomore year I made the cheer team again and I took 1 AP class which was AP European History (really hard I literally never slept) my grades were average and I was moving to a different city at the time and change was very hard on me once I moved I had no time what so ever for any AP classes so my junior and senior year in joining clubs and the swim team try to maintain a g.p.a of 4.0 as well as a job. I'm also going to join leadership, academic decathlon as well as volunteer . I'm the oldest out of 4 kids so I have to help my mom a lot since my dad is working all day. I plan on studying for the ACT/SAT as much as I can. UCLA is my dream school I can't see myself anywhere else. I'm going to try and do it without being in any AP classes which would be a miracle if I got in

This is my list.. "Life as a College Student" 1) How long did it take you to adjust? 2) How did you feel the first days of school? 3) How is it like being in a class with hundreds of students? Is it more difficult to learn? 4) How does it feel to be in a school with competitive students? 5) Do you walk to class every day or do you ride a bicycle because the school is so big? 6) What do you do when you need guidance or help on homework? Is there tutoring? 7) Explain the relationship you have with your professors. How are you able to be in contact with them when you need help? 8) Do you have class every day? How long is every class? How many classes did you take? 9) Was it difficult to make friendships in the first days of school? Do you ever feel like an outcast? 10) How is dorm life? Do you feel that having a small room is a detriment on how well you study? 11) How often do you see your family? 12) If students don't have a car, is there a metro station or buses close to UCLA? 13) How is your time management? Do you stay up late every day doing homework and studying? 14) How is your life outside of academics? Do you have time to have fun and go out with friends? 15) Now that your freshmen year is coming to an end, do you regret coming in to UCLA? So far what are your best memories that you have from UCLA? Was it it that you most like about this school? *Okay so these are my questions and I hope you get back to them soon. Can you please make a video? :)

How can you get a 4.6 GPA. At my school the highest GPA you can get is a 4.0. Will UCLA take that into consideration?
@norastack6110
@norastack6110 7 жыл бұрын
Amanda Newman 4.6 would be on an unweighted 5.0 scale, you have to take AP classes to achieve this I believe. A 4.0 is usually the weighted scale.

Good tips! I agree with the personal statement, it's one of the most important factors so definitely don't do it last minute! Also, I would say to avoid cliche personal statements such as writing about volunteering at a beach or hospital. Thousands do that. Be unique. Talk about challenges, hardships, and personal accomplishments that aren't necessarily seen as typical. I got accepted to both UCLA and Berkeley. I chose Berkeley :)

I don't understand American colleges, I live in Australia the only way a college will accept u is if ur marks are good enough, they do not care one single bit about what u do and done outside of academics.

Help! Im a freshman and I don't take Honors this year and have a 3.5 currently. The next two quarters I am getting more help so assuming I did end up with 4.0 or around there, will it be ok I didn't take honors? I will take at least two next year and possibly three, and definitely three junior year, and onward to senior year. This doesn't have to apply to UCLA just any good school, but I also do numerous extra curricular activities (track, forensics, volunteer over summer) and is there anything I'm not doing thats good? Anything I need to add? Thanks so much.

You need to be taking a more rigorous schedule of classes. However, achieving less than A's in regular classes does not represent someone who is UCLA material. I would recommend that you show your devotion to extracurriculars in your essays. However, don't spread yourself too thin, as colleges want to see passion.

I believe your freshman year isn't weighted as heavily against you unlike soph and jr. I had no honors or aps my freshman year and got a 3.6 my first semester. I then proceeded to take more honors and ap's each following year and earned straight A's since my 2nd semester of freshman year. I was able to get accepted into ucla. also Keep in my that volunteering is really important as well

Not all schools are equal in their educational opportunities. I have a pretty low SAT score even though I studied a lot but I think it is because my school didn't have hard classes even in rigorous programs.

I hate myself for not joining extra curriculars earlier!! I had terrible anxiety and honestly did not know any thing about the college system. I just started now as a junior and I'm in rotary club and student council but that's it:/ I don't think I have any chance now. I've also gotten a total of 3 B's and 1 C. I'm still in the top %10 in my class though. I wish 16 year old me would have told 13 year old me to get involved. NO ONE told me to get involved in order for colleges to look at you until late sophomore year!

This was really helpful, thanks :) My personal statement for the skill/talent prompt is about art and how it has changed my outlook. My (stringent) English teacher read it and said it was good. It makes it sound like I should be applying to an art major though (going for more the neuroscience route). Should I run with it or pick a different topic? Art really is a huge part of me though.

can you do a video on your psychobiology major? What it is, easy/hard, what you study/classes that you take for it, etc? I'm thinking of going into a med field and I'm trying to figure out my major, as I'm going to be applying this year :)
@AmandaMagana
@AmandaMagana 10 жыл бұрын
yes! What I can say is that I really don't know too much about psychobiology right now, considering I am not taking my upper division (major focused) courses and am only taking general education courses that all the pre med majors take so all majors are basically the same when it comes to the classes you take before you declare your major:) so when you first start college, it doesn't matter too much your major, because all the pre med majors have around the same list of classes they must take first! :)

Do you have any more advice for international students? I understand if you don't because you aren't an international student. I'm only in high school right now, but I live in Japan and ucla is currently my dream school. I'm really worried that my English academic level won't be high enough to get into such a great school, especially since I'm certain I still have the English speaking skills of a sixth grader. And although I'll be sad to leave my family, I'm not worried about being homesick because I used to live in the us from first grade to sixth and ever since I moved back to Japan, all I can ever think about is going back. America just feels like home to me, even though I've only lived there for five years, and my real home country is Japan.
