I play theater of the mind as well and also collect and paint miniatures. I use them occasionally in game but not very often. Its like eating the chocolate crust off of your candy bar first. They go together perfectly but are just as enjoyable consumed separately.

I have many miniatures now, but as a kid in the 70's and 80's we only had a couple miniatures, used lots of everything else for miniatures, ( we used Cast Lead bullets) but many people used coins, or candy or anything else that they had. we would often draw the dungeon room on paper, or the "Map" we had been drawing. I occasionally use theater of the mind, but anything you can do visually is better.

I have too much bad experiences with theater of mind. Thinks like, "I run up to the enemies." DM nods, next round I say, "I take my axe and swing it low, hoping to put the monster on the ground." and the DM saying, "Oh you'll be there next round." TLDR Even if unintentional you get screwed too much if nothing is tracking where you're at.

The barrier to entry is actually quite low. I got started by just poping a model into a slicer and hitting auto support. There are a ton of communities that are really welcoming to newbie printers. There are some elitists out there, but dont pay attention to them.

Miniature Market had Altar Quest for $45 a few weeks ago, and the Stretch Goals box for $35. They have 76 and 135 minis respectively. Next Level Miniatures do Kickstarters for just minis and you're usually getting them for less than $1/mini. Their most recent one had them organized into little scenario sets so you could easily do one for a D&D session without needing to figure out what you need. A Song of Ice and Fire miniature boxes are often on sale for $20-22/box. Slightly more pricy for the per mini cost but again, great collections of similar minis. Oh, you want some sea priests? Grab some Drowned Men. Epic Encounters is a great reco and some of their sets go for $25 or less on sale. Darkest Dungeon board game is around $135 which means it's about $1/mini.

One of the conventions I used to go to was Recruits in Lee's Summit, MO. It was hosted by a high school club and only cost $5 for the whole weekend. There were always some great deals there between the cheap vendor stalls and the silent auction where attendees could sell and buy all kinds of games, minis, and terrain. Unfortunately, the convention has been discontinued, so I'm going to have to start looking around again.

Ive picked up small groups of the same figure for enemies if the paintjob is not bad the last couple of years off eBay, for a couple of GBP each figure. But you definitely stuck paydirt at the bring and buy! 😃😃😃😃 And kudos for donating them to your local youth group. 👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎

I am a 1e player, back in the late 70's we all started with miniatures as kids as soon as we could afford some ( and find some) . Now, I have a 3d printer, and I am printing most of the useful monsters in the Monster Manual in numbers that I can do the encounter sizes also!!! Nothing like the visual appeal of 200 giant rats coming at your player characters!1 all you Theater of the Mind Players will never be able to visualize that, you player turn you out as soon as you start talking, but you know the saying, "A picture is worth a 1000 words" and placing 20 or 50 goblin miniatures on the table really gets the point across, way better then any words I can say!!!!!

I love all Dungeoncraft videos! In 2024 there really is no reason NOT to have a 3d printer - i still buy sets of miniatures and collect older ones but the ability to knock out an encounter monsters a day before the sessions for literally pennies, or just giving one of your friends set of miniatures so he can play your favourite skirmish games with you is invaluable - apart of "i cant be asked" there is no argument left against owning a printer if you are into this hobby and intend to stay

If you're into the steampunk vibe, Privateer Press board games (Undercity and Widower's Wood) have a ton of minis and are usually pretty affordable. The minis are a soft plastic and paint up nice. I couldn't get my rattle can primer to stick, but just putting acrylic paint straight on worked just fine.

A great alternative for miniatures is ArcKnight’s Flat Plastic Minis. They’re 2D miniature standees with full color art. Not only do you not have to paint them, you can store an entire army in the space of a hardcover book with a trading card binder. This also makes transporting your minis to conventions and other public gaming spaces a breeze. ArcKnight has great deals on bundles and starter packs. For myself, I bought the Fantasy Core Set and filled out the collection with a few extra packs of demons and undead. In one fell swoop, I acquired about 400 minis and have no need to buy any more minis for the rest of my life.

The dark souls character expansion was my first real set of fantasy miniatures. I pretty much dry brushed the whole box, layer by layer with craft paints and love how they hold up with minis I've painted with more finessed techniques. I think they are selling a lot of the minis from the board game in smaller packs now for the rpg version. I'd also rec the phantoms expansion for more dark souls awesomeness. Great recommendation professor!

Tainted Grail Monsters of Avalon (1 or 2). I have purchased one. You get 20 monsters (3 bucks per) that require no assemly and are high quality. I had a ton of fun painting them. I posted some completed minis in your discord last year. The dark souls set is great! Friend bought that for me for my bday last year. I still have smough and the dancer of the boreal valley to paint. If you watch for reaper kickstarter you can usually get a discount per mini by pledging. Reaper is my personal favorite mini brand (they just have that nice old school vibe).

I bought Magic the Gathering: Arena of the Planewalkers a few years ago just for the miniatures. I also bought some sets of Wrath of Kings and A Song of Ice and Fire miniatures when I found them on sale (Miniature Market or Amazon). The detail is excellent and the cost was good if I watched for sales. Last fall, I bought a 3D filament printer during a Black Friday sale. It was a large upfront cost but I can print miniatures with a lot of detail depending on the image file

This is tangential, but I also love getting plastic standees, especially from ArcKnight. They call them "flat, plastic miniatures". Saw these in a video by Kelsey Dionne talking about her DM kits. Nice to fill out your collection quickly and doesn't have to be painted/assembled. I was getting into 5 Parsecs from Home and didn't have any sci-fi minis, so I grabbed a couple of their sets and I now have more than I'll ever need. Then if I want to replace them with actual minis I'm not under any pressure to get it done now.

Great video! I can really relate to it since I'm always on the lookout for cheap miniatures. There are a lot of low-quality and questionable miniature sets for sale on Amazon, but I've picked up a couple that turned out to be a decent value for the price: - Guards set by Drunk'n Dragon which features 5 copies of 5 figures (total of 25 miniatures) for just under $1 per mini. Thre are 3 human guard poses (sword, crossbow, spear), 1 dwarf and 1 half-orc - Mythical Heroes Forest/Swamp edition by House of Bodian which includes 90 figures (6 copies of several small/medium figures and 3 copies of some large-sized ones) - the detail isn't great, but the set has many has useful figures such as ankhegs, giant spiders, owlbears, blights (needle, twig, vine), shriekers, ettercaps, hags, dryads, lizardfolk, etc. Price works out to less than 50 cents per figure.

Not to mention some fun D&D celebrities like Luke Gygax, Ed Greenwood, and Kelsey Dionne are walking around and playing in games there too! Hope to see you there someday professor!

Some great tips there! I have quite a few of the Darksouls minis and like them, they aren't as perfect in some cases with mold lines etc. But nothing that can't be fixed up

Great tip! I ran a Dark Heresy one-shot and used the miniatures I got with the Nemesis board game. I've also been using the minis from "Betrayal at Baldur's gate" for my PCs pretty regularly.

I've had good luck finding miniatures from Rune Wars board games and Massive darkness. A Song of Ice and Fire have countless awesome ones in eBay. Inexpensive feudal Japan/samurai miniatures have been really difficult to find. Would love to hear from anyone who've found some.

I love this channel and this video had me cracking up. 😂 All that was missing from this video was Bill Mays, Ron Popeil, and Vince with his Sham-wow! But wait! That’s not all! If you order minis before midnight tonight they’ll double your order! All you have to do is pay the extra shipping and handling! 😂

A friend of mine gifted the whole group those D&D terrain boxes. Mini wise I bought a bunch of acrylic flat minis. You can pretty much put them in those plastic baseball card pages in a notebook. Then people flip through and pick a mini.

I have Blood rage, highly second the recommendation! Depending on how cheap qualifies as cheap, some of the Song of Ice and Fire starter sets could come in clutch - the wildling set gives you 48 minis (including 2 giants) for just over $2/mini. Monolith's Conan boardgame is also a great source for miniatures - it's currently out of print but they have done at least a second print run so it might show up again. I admit I never played the boardgame but I *have* used the miniatures a lot :) Edit: The SOIAF are slightly larger scale than Blood rage so worth checking first if that's the kind of thing that bothers you.

I realize it's not a feasible option for everyone, but if you can play out about $300 for a resin 3d printer and curing station it will save you a bundle in the long run. I used to spend a lot on miniatures. Then I got a Mars 2 Pro printer for about $250 and I can print miniatures and small terrain for literally pennies each. It sounds like a lot but you can easily drop that much on a single Kickstarter project.
