I am diagnosed adhd and self diagnosed asd. I think the winning combo is to be always changing and experimenting to stimulate the adhd, yet very consistent for my autism. Autism thrives on routines. Ty so much for an insightful and rarely discussed topic!

I can’t believe I never noticed I had ADHD, no wonder I’ve been taking so many days off lately from my Art. If anyone is curious, I am currently on a mission to draw and paint every super smash bros ultimate character and I’ve been feeling very demotivated to continue after around 32/89. watching this video has definitely helped me and I’ll make it my absolute top 1 priority to at least do 1 drawing a day. I normally aimed for 2 a day but I think it would be best to aim for at least some sort of progress every day

even just 5 minutes of drawing, sometimes it's just hard to get started with ADHD which is understandable. Try not to be too hard on yourself. Just a little practice exercise can be enough

Don't let your struggles hold you back, I have the same issues, I had to spend hours writing when I was younger so my writing was legible. It's not impossible you just have to want it bad enough xD

I've always loved art and I've been wanting to d something with it for years now but as someone with ADHD I've never been able to stay consistant with it, I'm constantly jumping between different mediums and ideas and I always have half finished projects, then sometimes I won't draw at all for months and it's so frustrating :( Thought I've recently gotten back into drawing in my sketchbook more and trying to worry less about making it look good and jsut have fun with it even if I'm only drawing for like 15 minutes which has been fun ^^ Thank you for these helpful tips I'm going to give them a try :)

Omg, I have the same problem…just a bunch of half-finished art sitting around forever until I actually get one done. And I take breaks from even working on any art for like months it’s ridiculous, I hate it. It’s so frustrating when I have all this art I want to make, yet I have this problem where I still have a bunch of unfinished art still from before. I was wondering what was wrong with me why I’m like this, I might have ADHD too. I already have a lot of depression, so I could have that also..

I think you have the right idea honestly. When I made this video I was burning myself out a lot and pushing myself way too hard. Just be mindful when you draw and take it a bit at a time. Drawing something small every day can help, and doing those practice exercises I talked about in this video. Be kind to yourself and try not to beat yourself up. You will draw when you're ready to. Sometimes just getting started can help but it's also difficult with ADHD.

Honestly, Meditation has helped me immensely. I am no longer medicated, I meditate with the calm app. There's this guy called Jeff Warren, he has ADHD too he does guided meditations on there, he's also on youtube. It's helped discipline my brain so much more that I am actually functional, and can finish tasks. A warning though if you focus on your inner thoughts and feelings you may end up dealing with traumas. Which should be dealt with anyway tbh.

Thanks for Sharing! I'm sorry to hear you're struggling :< I am no longer medicated either. Over time it caused me a lot of anxiety. I prefer meditation these days. There's a guy called Jeff Warren (He's on youtube as well) and he has ADHD and does guided meditations specifically for people with ADHD. It helps me so much more than medication ever did.

Not sure if you're still reading the comments on this one, but first of all thanks for such a wonderful vid. I've theorized I might have inattentive ADHD for a while, I have a really hard time trying to focus on my work and keeping up with it, which given I'm trying to branch out as a freelance artist myself makes things difficult for me, I also just have a hard time accepting breaks when I feel I haven't got enough work done so I usually end up in a limbo with no free time or much work actually done. I really like your Pinterest idea, I'm gonna try that next time I'm distracted. I have a question about taking no breaks, since it's your job I assume you have to draw for long hours most days, so I was wondering what process do you use for that? do you set any timers at all or just keep going till you feel the natural need for a break?. I've tried everything from 90min/20min breaks, the Pomodoro didn't seem to work for me since taking breaks every 25 mins took me out of the process(plus 5 mins is no time for me to do much), right now I'm just setting a timer when I work to try and get into the flow state, then just taking breaks when I feel like I need it.

Thanks for your feedback I'm so glad you liked my video! Honestly, I burned myself out doing a lot of art, but I'm looking at getting back into it. I also have a 6yo kid with autism and adhd so I had to take a big break to take care of him. I was drawing about 8 hours, but it's not for everyone, I would hyperfocus and get lost in it. A lot of it was achievement driven because of an abusive childhood, so Idk how exactly anyone else would channel that, you gotta find what works for you. I'm overcoming a lot of that now through meditation, that's one thing I definitely recommend for anyone with ADHD, it's really helped me to slow down. I think what you're doing is fine, and you gotta do what works for you, getting started is the challenging part, so sometimes I'll tell myself I just need to do 10 minutes, and usually that sucks you in enough :')

I’ve got Asperger’s and learning difficulties/problems. Possibly undiagnosed ADHD. Including depression. I have tried for many years to draw.. no matter how much I try to study to how to draw, even if it is anatomy, proportions and perspective… I always fail. I spent money on a digital drawing tablet, multiple drawing softwares and stuff… I have not been successful at all… I don’t know what to do.. :( I watched your video and the majority of things you have suggested.. did not work for me. So I’ve failed **big time** and I don’t know what to do about it :( I’m sorry if I don’t make sense or not clear enough..

Hi, I'm autistic and have ADHD too, is it possible you are being too much of a perfectionist/your own worst critic? I'd also emphasise that there's no shame in taking longer to do things than is "average/normal". I found this video had some good ideas and I'm glad I watched it but I would say if you really can't handle drawing every day, for instance, don't force it, it's better to do some art than no art even if it's not a lot, and maybe try googling things like "simple/easy stuff to draw" cuz sometimes I do that when I just want to draw some cute silly thing in pencil or simple colours (like a kawaii face milk carton with strawberries around it or something), at least that might help you realise that you can draw *some* things even if you can't draw everything or really complex stuff very well at this stage. It's ok to have your own style as well even if it's not super realistic or accurate all the time, there is a collective called Arthouse Unlimited and I would recommend you look at their website as I think they are all phenomenal artists and they all have LD (learning disabilities/difficulties), they sell their stuff on various high-quality merchandise (chocolate wrappers, postcards, mugs, scarves - a variety of things) and I find it really helpful for reminding me of the limitless ways one can draw and design a piece of art. If you've worked mostly in one medium or only a couple, perhaps consider trying something different if money allows - if you've only or mostly worked in pencil you might enjoy oil pastels, or paint markers, as an example, conversely if you tend to work in colour there may be some benefit to just using a pencil or black pen to draw sometimes just so you don't have to pick colours or change the colour you're working with and can just concentrate on the lines/overall construction of the drawing itself. Particularly if you're working with just a pencil, eraser and sharpener it's worth spending a little extra money on pencils with strong leads, erasers that don't smudge and a sharpener that works well and consistently as it will spare a lot of grief. I do also do digital art on an iPad and I'm not sure what to advise for that but I'll give it some thought, I do think the creator of this video was right to suggest practising your hand-eye coordination, as a digital artist in particular, as various features of tablets and styluses mean it's probably even more important to get used to producing accurate lines if you are working digitally and want your work to look smooth. Layers are your friend though - remember you can always start a new layer before drawing part of something on a tablet if you are lacking in confidence and want to be able to erase and redraw a lot without erasing the bits you already are happy with, then merge those two specific layers later if you need to for another part of what you're doing to come out right, resizing and repositioning tools can also be a great help as well. That's all I can think of for now, sorry if all or most of these are things you've already tried but I really hope that at least one thing I said is useful for you :)

What are you making those "failures" mean? it's okay to make mistakes, it's okay to fail, in fact, being an artist, you're going to have so many failures and setbacks. The only way to be "successful" is to "fail" many times :3 I hope this helps. (Sorry for the late reply)

I've never considered myself having ADHD, but have the problem of never being able to stop/relax, I have to always be doing something - but this doesnt help my art. I start a million things but cant get myself to take slow care when doing things since working in factory production line age 16, I get frustrated with my sloppiness and i either never finish it or I destroy/bin it ~ does anyone relate please?

Me actually :') I have entire sketchbooks where I ripped most of the pages out frustrated with myself! This is the beginning of your art journey and totally normal! Pushing through that, allowing yourself not to be perfect, but trying your best, that's how you get through it. You can do anything!
