i love your approach , not just to singing but in learning anything in life. strange how it's so easy for most of us to lose sight of the simple truth that it's most often not that you can or can't: you just need to isolate the problem and tackle it specifically and head on. it's been 4 years since you posted this, so i hope this philosophy has paid off for you in spades since 2017.

I know the first step was deciding that it was possible, and none of my improvement would have come (especially not as quickly as it did) without making that mindset shift. And you’re 100% right, because I’ve been able to tackle a bunch of other things with the same approach and it’s been mind blowing. ☺️ If you ever have any questions about singing just let me know, I’d be happy to help!😄

Kate Cosette I've already subscribed, I will definetely check them out. If you do have time, this is my starting point in terms of transitioning my "over developed head voice": m.soundcloud.com/nadia-n-9 . And in terms that everyone can sing, I agree, until I was 28 years old, I was under the impression that I was tone deaf, but as it turns out, it was only a sort of mental limitation. Once again, very enthusiastic that I discovered your channel ! Have an amazing day

I’ve just listened to your cover of Helium, and you have a gorgeous voice! I can already guarantee you that everything you want to do with your voice is already there, all you have to do is just allow it to come out ☺️ With most anything, but especially learning voice, it is never too late, and age is never a factor. So you’re 100% right about that! I can also say that I’ve found that with the singers I’ve coached, the ones who had only chest voice and no head voice had a much harder time learning mixed voice than those who began with only head voice. So already you’ll have a little easier time as you improve, if that makes you feel any better about spending so much of your life trapped in head voice. You have a wonderful high range and that breathiness when you sing is very instinctual and beautiful. I’m very excited to see your vocal journey! I’ll give you some things to start with, after hearing where you are right now! Especially as you went higher, your breath wasn’t supporting you as well as it can. This was the first thing I started working on☺️You’ll find a huge difference in both the ability to hold notes and have a stronger head voice, plus pitch and tone and lots of great things, by learning to breathe from your diaphragm. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXOypGOpiqp7nrc here’s my video for that! This is the first thing I suggest you learn, it’ll make everything so much easier! The next thing I’d suggest is mixed voice (just like I mentioned here in this video). Here’s a more in depth video of the nay exercise. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKezYYhvpJaBiNU For now, these are the two things I would focus on! I have another video on mixed voice and erasing your vocal break, which you can also check out😄Your voice is beautiful already, I can’t wait to see how you grow! Keep me posted!

It's amazing to hear such story! I myself have always liked to sing, but never really knew what i was doing.. It was mostly chest voice all the time.. Recently i started taking vocal lessons and turns out that my low register as a baritone is quite great, but on higher ranges i just completely break.. Any tips? I also find it so hard to mix between chest and head.. (What hurt my voice the most and got me lost btw, is imitating other singers.. It will only get you farther away from your real voice)
@katecosettevocals
@katecosettevocals 5 жыл бұрын
hi! I have completely got you covered. The whole vocal break issue is solved by learning mixed voice. so, the break is caused because we have head voice and chest voice, and when people try to go from one to the other, they "break it off" to get to the other instead of seamlessly blending it in with one another. Mixed voice allows you to seamlessly go in between head voice and chest voice, therefore completely erasing that break! Yes, I totally understand that too--I did a lot of imitating singers in the past. Definitely counterintuitive! All of the things that I used to teach myself to sing will 100% teach you just the same!! Check out this video to get started learning mixed voice and you can let me know if you have any questions!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp_FnamfpZV7h6s Really practice this "nay" exercise. That's my best advice for you for where you're at. Practice 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, singing that "nay" sound over any song you sing. (really easy to do in the car during a daily commute!) Just make sure you're practicing that nay exercise correctly--it should be a very cringy, loud and annoying sound, and NEVER utilizes your throat. You will be amazed at how this simple exercise, this simple practice, will completely transform your voice. It takes a very long time to get this all ingrained in muscle memory and to simply be natural. (for me, it took over a year to get mixed voice totally down with muscle memory). But it *will* . I 100% guarantee that you will learn to sing with ease using the tricks and exercises in my videos! They worked for me, and I didn't even *have* a chest voice when I started!! You're already ahead of the game. :D I also offer online voice lessons for if you need some one-on-one help! But again, everything in the videos on my channel are what I used to sing, and if you practice diligently, that's all you'll need! :) Good luck, be patient, and don't forget to have fun~!

This video was absolutely amazing! there's one thing i struggle with and its the nay, i've looked up so many videos, I can do it it head voice but can't seem to do it in mixed or chest voice, do you have any suggestions?
@katecosettevocals
@katecosettevocals 7 жыл бұрын
Sophie hi! Thank you so much :) Okay, so if you can do it in your head voice, I'm going to assume you can feel your voice resonating kind of above the roof of your mouth-- is that right? Doing this "nay" exercise right will force your voice to go into mixed voice immediately. You'll feel your voice a little bit more backward in your mouth, right under your soft palate but not in your throat. If you don't feel your voice there then you might not be doing it right. Try your best to make that really nasal sound, like a baby crying. You'll make a weird face doing this exercise and can't do it without it. It's almost like you're smiling really big so that your cheeks go up and your tongue will be close to the roof of your mouth. That "nay" sound will originate in the back of the roof of your mouth--your soft palate--and it should feel kind of tight and thin. You'll know it's right when you feel your voice in that area and it'll be fairly loud so don't be afraid to let it. I feel like the example of trying to resemble a baby's cry or whine is the best to follow, so even if you have to look up a video of a crying baby haha try to imitate that. You'll know you're doing it right when your voice feels free and easily able to go up in your range, and it'll feel like it's a stronger version (but very nasally) of your head voice. Also, this specific exercise *shouldn't* work in chest or head voice. That nasal sound is purely mixed voice. If you feel it in head voice you're probably just singing in head voice, and not making it nasal, and sometimes when I'm unsure if I'm doing mixed voice or chest voice, I'll try to do the nay exercise to check. If I can sing the note with that nasal sound, I'll know I'm in mixed voice (or that the note is in my mixed voice range) but if I *can't* do the nay it's because the note is in my chest voice (or supposed to be). Think about it too--when people pretend to say things in a snooty way, all nasal and such, they can't sound nasal in a lower tone of voice or in too high of a voice. Lol does that make sense..? Haha sorry this is long, I sat here for a while trying to figure out how to explain this so lemme know if that helps you! If it doesn't, I shall do my best to come up with something else that might help you! But trust me--once you get it, your life will change. Haha :) and you *will* get it. I promise!! And thanks again for watching:) I really appreciate it!!

I really suggest learning mixed voice, and getting it really strong-that’ll make a really good, smooth, easy transition from chest voice to head voice so that you don’t run into problems like that! From there you can work on strengthening your belt voice, but don’t worry about that just yet. Definitely get mixed voice down first!! I have two other videos that I think can really help: Here’s a sort of overview on mixed voice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp_FnamfpZV7h6s And here’s a video that’s all about the nay exercise - the easiest way I found to get into mixed voice and really strengthen it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKezYYhvpJaBiNU Give those two a watch and let me know if you have any other questions!!

alia li thanks very much! Since I've had head voice for as long as I can remember, I'm having a hard time trying to explain where to "aim" it, but what I can say is that my head voice was very breathy and weak for a long time until I did these three things: 1. Learned to breathe from my diaphragm, 2. Learned to form vowels correctly (to give me lots of space). And as I developed mixed voice, it strengthened my head voice tenfold. I'd suggest learning those things and working on learning and/or developing and strengthening mixed voice. I think those are where I would start! Please let me know how it goes and if you have any other questions! Again, thank you SO much for your kind words! :)

It sounds to me like you're just singing chest voice in the wrong placement! Here's a video I made about chest voice placement, try these exercises out and let me know if it helps!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3_LdJiYpLKprbc The most important thing to know is that singing (even chest voice/belting) should never be painful. If it is, that's just a result of straining due to your voice being in the wrong placement. Chest voice is also talking voice, so rest assured you will be able to do this! :) Let me know if that helps!

Hello! First of all, I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble and frustration with singing! I do understand how you feel, but you will absolutely be able to learn how to sing! If you were interested in giving singing lessons another shot, I do offer lessons that you can even try one time to see if I’d be a good fit to work with you. My website is katecosettevocals.com if you are interested! However if you’d like to take advantage of some free content before putting more money into your journey, I’ll give you some advice and links! The first thing I suggest you work on is singing in tune/on pitch. If I’m reading your message correctly, you might have a problem hearing yourself singing while you sing. Most people who have this problem focus too much on the music and the other singer and don’t listen to themselves. Step 1 is to record yourself singing along to a song and then listen to that recording to hear if you are singing the same notes as the singer, and the same notes you thought you were singing while you were singing. If they don’t match, then it’s because you aren’t hearing yourself. Learning to sing in tune/on rhythm is one of the only things I learned naturally so I don’t have personal experience learning it. However, I have a few videos from other KZbin coaches that I can link for you if this does happen to be a vocal problem for you! For the people I’ve coached who dealt with pitch and tune problems, these were incredibly helpful tips! It takes a lot of practice and patience but with the people I’ve helped through that particular issue, you absolutely will get through it with practice! As for breathing with your diaphragm, I made a video on it with a super easy trick that should get you breathing correctly in no time! Here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXOypGOpiqp7nrc And as for learning registers, I suggest beginning with mixed voice. General overview of mixed voice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp_FnamfpZV7h6s The nay exercise (mixed voice exercise): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKezYYhvpJaBiNU Let me know if you’d like those other links and if you have any other questions! I would be happy to help you through lessons or answering any questions on here! And stay encouraged!! I spent over 12 years working on my voice and it took about 8 years for me to finally start making a lot of headway (would have been much less if I knew about all this stuff ahead of time!), and I am so glad I didn’t give up. You will get there! Let me know how it goes!

@@katecosettevocals seen more of your vids and your completely right…I’m so impatient learning it, that I learned half way and then proceeded with something else without actually perfecting it before going to the next step…like I may have support and placement right but my vowels are wrong, or I may have correct vowels and placement right but my breathing is wrong… I was tired with scales, so all the practice I’ve been doing was singing from my playlist for the past year and that kinda helped me remember some of the articulation but pitch might be wrong, or I ran of air or sometimes even slur my words… Technically I’m learning to rap, and reason why, cause I’ve dealt with a lot of stuff I know some people can relate so I have something to write about, and I’m also antisocial singing/rapping helps me have a voice, which is why I wanna learn cause I have a difficult to express myself, but music is my life🎶 So far I’ve been practicing for 3-4 years now and I still feel new honestly, even though I do practice everyday…I still feel like I still have a lot to work on cause I did record myself and I sound like a disaster, and so cringe I wanna be like Patrick living under a rock so no one can hear me😭 so yeah I need to start recording myself more often, mostly I’ve been practicing blindly and hope in getting the notes right and I do hit some, but I mostly make mistakes, like straining, my tone sounds like I’m choking, like right now I feel my throat soar… I’m mostly been learning on my own 😞

@@Ludachris32 everything you’re saying is so completely understandable, and I have absolutely been there! If it helps, now that I understand that singing is all about muscle habits, I began to think of singing as no different than learning to ride a bike or do push ups. So no matter where someone starts in their vocal journey, all I hear is their potential. A “bad” sounding voice is not actually bad; it’s just a voice resonating in the wrong place. The same way that when someone is learning to ride a bike but their balance is wrong and they fall, we don’t think that they’ll never be able to ride a bike. We know they just need to adjust how they’re doing it and then they’ll be riding a bike well in no time. There is no difference with singing! Definitely practice on your own as long as you want, I’d be honored to hear your voice and help you through it if that’s what you decide to do but whatever feels right to you! The one thing I will say is make sure that you NEVER feel pain or strain or pushing or a sore throat. No matter what, those are signs that what you’re doing isn’t helping you sing well and definitely aren’t healthy! All singing, when done correctly, feels easy and free and relaxed. I’ll leave you with this, not sure if you watched it yet but this is my vocal transformation. I hope that if you hear where my voice began and where I am now, it can encourage you to not give up and see just how much potential you have. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4OmdXewbtdlmaM Let me know if you have any other questions! (and if you do, post them in a new comment rather than a reply to this thread-KZbin doesn’t give me notifications for replies for some reason!) Keep me posted and take it one day at a time!

I gotta say thank you, cause of you, everything makes sense now ✨ seen a video where you mentioned the 3 important fundamentals for singing, that we shouldn’t learn half way, master it before anything…so I went back to basics, and started with breathing, maybe after 3 days, no joke I feel different in my voice, I could literally feel the air passing by, I could feel the resonance of my voice and clear…and when you said I shouldn’t feel no tension, or strain, I could feel my voice freely… And when you said once you realize it’s all muscle habits, I started to see what you meant, it’s like I’ve woken up, all cause of my breathing exercises, and I wouldn’t noticed it if it wasn’t for you… You’ve given golden nuggets, and not only that but your encouragement… So I payed attention, stayed focus and did my breathing exercises, and after a few days I’ve noticed my voice sounding different… I wouldn’t say I’m a pro now but now I know what to work on… Thanks again 🙌🏼

Straining comes from putting your voice in the wrong place in your mouth, so learning vocal placement is your best bet! Here’s a video I made that’s an overview of learning to sing and explains vocal placement in a general way: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJ3Ro6eBodeBmrcsi=Zry6ikiCh-WWzA_c Pretty much, you’ll want to learn head voice, mixed voice and chest voice! I have videos on all 3 registers. For people used to straining, that indicates that you’re probably singing in your chest voice register, so I suggest starting to learn head voice first, and then mixed voice afterward, and then circling back to chest voice after you have those two down!

@katecosettevocals

mixed voice will definitely solve the problem of chest voice going too high/turning into shouting or flipping to head voice! mixed voice is actually a different placement than chest voice or head voice - a lot of people fall into the trap of trying to do mixed voice from one or the other, but it's actually in a place in your mouth between them. here's a video on the Nay exercise! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKezYYhvpJaBiNU For most people, this can be a very elusive placement to find, and sometimes there are habits that block it off/make it harder to access. If you give this a shot and still run into issues, I'd be happy to do an online lesson with you to help you find it! But definitely give that video a try first and see how it goes!! :)

Hi kate Cosette, I have a question... I usually do high chest belt instead of going in mixed voice (learning in progress).. This could be silly, but i kinda got Influenced by harry styles singing, cause my speaking voice sounds low as his. My question is... Is that technique healthy? Or else everyone MUST learn mixed voice? Or, is he really sings in mixed voice and am judging wrong that he's doing high chest belt? Please clarify my confusion. Thanks!
@katecosettevocals
@katecosettevocals 4 жыл бұрын
I can definitely guarantee that Harry mastered mixed voice. A great way to tell if a singer has mastered/learned/practiced mixed voice, is the fact that they can transition smoothly from the lowest notes of their range to the highest, with no "vocal break" or abrupt change. It's sort of like how automatic cars seamlessly switch gears; learning mixed voice helps you to seamlessly "switch the gears" in your voice, from chest to head voice. Without mixed voice, it'll be a very abrupt change, and you'll lose a lot of flexibility. And at least in my experience, I'm so grateful to have learned mixed voice because now when I sing, since I've trained my mixed voice to the point where I can do it naturally without even thinking about it, whenever I try to sing anything in my range, my voice seamlessly transitions for me. So at least in my experience, I think mixed voice is the foundational part of singing that, if a singer decides not to learn or doesn't already do it naturally, they might miss out on an effortless singing voice. So I really do suggest putting in the time into learning. If it helps, it's a lot of practicing for a year or so, but you never have to think about it again once your muscle memory kicks in! I honestly credit my vocal improvement almost solely on learning mixed voice. But that's NOT to say that you HAVE to learn mixed voice--it's your choice! The only unhealthy thing you can do when singing is anything that causes you to feel pain, or any kind of tension in your head, neck, throat, chest, anywhere. Harry does have a great belt voice/high chest voice. In my experience, I learned mixed voice, and having that foundation allowed me to strengthen my belt voice/higher chest voice afterward (I also have a video lesson on that). I waited until my mixed voice was natural and 100% muscle memory before I started to raise my chest voice--but that's just what felt right to me. My best advice would be to learn mixed voice, but there is no right or wrong here (unless you feel tension or pain). Again, I'm speaking from my own experience, and the experience I've seen with the people I've had lessons with. Hope that helps!

Hi! I gave this a lot of thought-- I honestly think the way I started getting a stronger head voice was by 1. Learning to breathe from my diaphragm 2. Learning to form vowels and get space and 3. Develop a strong mixed voice. I think the mixed voice will really help strengthen your head voice for you. I noticed after all the work I spent on mixed voice that my head voice had gotten much stronger too. Start there maybe? Hope that helps :)

I am planning on making a head voice video at some point, so you can totally stay tuned for that! One trick I’ll try to explain in words here is this - head voice is the softest way to sing. So, imagine singing a song, but there’s someone in the same room as you who’s trying to sleep and you don’t want to wake them up. Pretty much, sing very softly with very little effort. Another tip to find your head voice is to realize you use it all the time when talking! Right now, talk as if you’re talking to a very cute child or puppy. The way you say “you’re so cute!” or “what a good dog!” in that soft, high voice is head voice. Use that approach and try to sing a song that way. I will be making a head voice video that will explain this with examples, so hopefully these tips help you now, but you can expect to see them and more in a video!

Thank you, I’m glad you liked the video! If you mean what order to learn the 3 voices, it’s different for everyone. For example, I started off naturally singing in head voice, so the next thing I did was worked a little bit on my lowest chest voice, then conquered mixed voice (the nay exercise) and then my higher chest voice/belting. But if someone else starts naturally singing with chest voice, they would start learning a different voice first. It isn’t crucial to follow a very specific order for it, but often learning mixed voice (the nay exercise) is the easiest place to start since it’s a mixture of the two. If that wasn’t what you meant by your question, I’ll just say that the nay exercise is mixed voice, which is like it’s own register. So you wouldn’t need to go from a different register to get to it. Check out this video that I made more recently, I explain everything you need to know about learning to sing (in a nutshell). kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJ3Ro6eBodeBmrc I have a bunch of other lesson videos on my channel for all of what I talked about in this video in more detail, so they should answer more of your questions! If not, leave me another question on any of my videos, I’ll be happy to help!

@@katecosettevocals You’re welcome! Your videos are amazing! Thank you for clearing it up for me. @@MarcusStaAnaBurSelF honestly, this is one of the most confusing parts of singing - learning placement (the three registers), so don't worry! It took me over 10 years to figure it out. If you're starting with chest voice, I do suggest learning mixed voice next (which is the nay exercise). However, head voice is different than the nay exercise. I have videos for both mixed voice (the nay) and head voice separately. It will make a lot more sense after watching the other videos!

Don’t worry!! No matter what, everyone starts off more comfortable with either chest voice or head voice, simply based on what felt most comfortable to you as you’ve been singing in your life. I felt the same way about chest voice, and I only had (only felt comfortable with) head voice. But I promise, you have head voice in you! You do! It’s just a matter of freeing it. When you’re so used to singing in chest voice, you’re used to singing with a lot of power and fullness. Head voice is the opposite of it. It’s also far easier effort-wise to sing in head voice. Head voice is the softest and the lightest part of your voice, and you already know how to use head voice. Right now, just say something in a way that you would say it if you were speaking to a really cute puppy or kitten or a baby. The “baby voice” we use for puppies such as the common “such a good boy!” or “awww!” is completely head voice. Also, when you softly hum higher notes, that’s head voice and mixed voice. In order to learn head voice, my advice would be to find a way to get your voice there (such as pretending you’re talking to a puppy), and say the lyric of your song like that. Then, really focus on how it felt to talk like that and try to take that same feeling and add a little melody to it, so try to sing it just like that. The biggest thing to remember is that head voice takes absolutely NO effort from ANY muscles, and it’s the EASIEST and most relaxed form of singing. So it’s going to feel very different from what you’re used to. But that’s important to remember. Because if you try to do head voice the same way you do chest voice, it’s just going to come out as chest voice. Let me know if that helps, happy singing!

hello! Firstly I’m sorry that your teacher is strict about head voice! I understand your struggles. I think I have something that may be helpful for you but sadly all of singing is about muscle habits which take weeks and months to develop. But let’s try to get you in at least a better place by your audition! The easiest way to get mixed voice is by using that Nay exercise I mentioned in the video (I also have a more in depth video on that specifically) but switching from Nay to the words of a song takes a lot of practice. You can try doing the Nay exercise over the audition song as much as you can over the next few days but I don’t know how much if it will be set in your muscle habits by then. Here’s that video if you wanted to try this route: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKezYYhvpJaBiNU The other option you could try (and this may sound weird, but hear me out haha) is practice singing the song like a valley girl (Aka, in a valley girl accent). This is more of a way of belting, but as you go higher your voice will naturally start to mix a little. I suggest this due to your short time frame, because if you imitate a valley girl accent while singing, your voice naturally goes into the right placement (which is much louder and not head voice). I have a video that explains this too that I’ll link for you! This is a great way to find that placement instantly because at least Americans have heard and sometimes used valley girl placement one time or another, which makes it an easier place to find than mixed voice (which we don’t use as often in everyday speaking). Note the disclaimer though: use the accent to find the placement, but try your best to keep your voice in that place *without* sounding like a “Mean Girl” haha. Here is the link for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3_LdJiYpLKprbc That’s the best advice I can give for such a short time frame, and at best it will help but won’t achieve muscle memory (that takes quite a while to do). Whichever you try - Nay or valley girl - try to do this over just that audition song as much as you can, but don’t overdo your voice. I’d say if you could, maybe at least an hour a day, but take breaks in between. Hopefully it will help, but again, it’s all muscles, similarly to trying to get abs in the same short time span. No matter what you do, stay relaxed as you sing (pushing and strain is the enemy!), drink lots and lots of water and be patient with yourself! Good luck and let me know if you have questions on those videos and I’d love to hear how your audition goes!!

I NEED HELP. Does this "nay" have to be in the chest voice or the head voice? I can't really hear the difference
@katecosettevocals
@katecosettevocals 6 жыл бұрын
Vlad Vlad the ‘nay’ sound shouldn’t be in chest voice OR head voice in any way at all. The ‘nay’ sound itself is your mixed voice, which is almost like a completely different register. If your head voice resonates in your head (like from your nose/ears and above), your chest voice resonates below (and also in front of your face), mixed voice will reside right under your soft palette, in the upper back of your mouth. This upper, back part of your mouth is where the nay sound should put your voice, and that’s where “mixed” voice will resonate. Try not to think about it as “singing” the word nay, because that might make you wonder if it should be in head or chest voice. Try thinking of it as just a sound to make that is completely separate from chest voice and head voice. If you’re doing it right, you won’t be able to make this sound in your lower range anyway. And if you try to do the nay in your head voice, either you’ll just end up singing in head voice or it’ll pull you straight out of head voice (like it’s supposed to). Meaning you really can’t make the sound in head voice anyway. So think of the nay (the mixed voice) is sort of a separate part of your voice for now. The nay sound should be gritty and ugly and loud. You’ll know you’re doing it right if you can do it with zero effort. Also, make that face (I make it in the video) while you do the sound; it’ll help force your voice back there. Make a sound like a baby crying or like a stubborn toddler saying something in the taunting tone of “nah nah nah nah nah” kind of a thing. Also! If none of this managed to help (or just served to confuse you more) I put links in the description of this video for the nay exercise. They’re the people who taught me how to do this and maybe just another way of explaining it will help you to get it to click! I also made two other videos on mixed voice on my channel, maybe they’ll help you out too? Let me know how it goes!

Vlad Vlad no problem at all! I went through the same thing when I was learning and even tried a few of those “courses” but what really ended up helping me were a bunch of youtubers sharing their knowledge for free. I’m still beyond grateful for their help and only want to give back the same way. :) Again, feel free to come back here with any questions and good luck!! Don’t forget to enjoy the process along the way :D

Vlad Vlad oh my gosh I’m so glad to hear that!!!! :) that’s amazing! Keep practicing and never give up, you’ll keep improving day after day! Keep in mind to take at least one day off of singing every week. You’ll come back from that rest day having improved immensely, trust me. I’m so glad you’re finding your mix!! Have fun and come back with any questions!
