Thank you, Austin. This is what I’ve been looking for. I’ve never liked my shading. I would try to smooth things out by applying a Gaussian blur but this didn’t look right. I’ve subscribed to you to see what else you can help me with.

In Procreate you don't necessarily need the Apple Pencil. There's this 'feature' that you can use to vary opacity and size by using speed. Even though a pressure sensitive pen really helps I found if you get used to the speed that it can be somewhat similar. I only use this because I can't afford any sort of pressure-sensitive stylus lol.

This was awsome, ive seen some of your other videos, and how do you go forward when choosing colours for the base and shadow and light and stuff hehehe do you like have a rule?
@austinbatchelor430
@austinbatchelor430 7 жыл бұрын
ken roger it's up to you. It just depends on what color the light is. Typically light is warm and shadow is cool so that's a loose rule you can follow. I'm working on an entire course on just light and color that will really help answer that question.

Hey, I was wondering. I see you are using the lasso tool and select all function often in your workflow. Do you use alpha lock on your layers as well or is it preference?, because they seem to fulfill the same purpose. And thanks for your videos they are a great help:)
@austinbatchelor430
@austinbatchelor430 7 жыл бұрын
zatuk I use the lasso tool and select all very very frequently. I rarely use alpha lock because it only allows me to work on the alpha locked layer instead of switching between multiples.

@wilmermartinez495

Multiplier is used to darken the shadow parts. He selected a fairly light brush and by changing the blend mode to multiplier, it will darken the color by multiplying it.... sorry for the bad explanation

Generally, you should not use the airbrush or a soft brush like that for shading. It is uncontrolled and inaccurate and you wont be able to determine how far the paint is stretching out. This instills a bad art habit thinking that the airbrush will just do all the work for you. Complex shapes require a higher degree of control over where paint is going and following this method it would make creating those shapes, like anatomy, much more difficult. You said to a commentor below me "Practice makes perfect" when she confronted you with this information. There is such thing as bad practice. bad practice instills bad habits which can create bad art, or limit learning at the least. If you are going to practice, put the time in and learn how to create smooth shading by painting with a hard round brush with opacity sensitivity.
