@@Aio-Project try picking closer to the neck. Many people pluck with fingers closer to the "P" pickup position but when using a plectrum they pick too further back towards the bridge making it sound less bodied. Good pick technique (for metal) sounds unbelievably similar to Steve Harris doing his thing. (Before the flames begin people, check the many KZbin videos about it and get angry at life, not at me 😅). By the way your original comment is spot on. Too many rock and metal bass players mistakenly believe they "should" be playing with their fingers, but their plucking is just weak, making the entire band sound dull.
@Aio-Project Жыл бұрын
@@RaulRieraS yeah i feel like too many bassists i see gave up on finger style too early. regardless of which technique, ive heard a lot of local metal bands where bassists just sound harsh as for the closer to the neck or bridge, i find that the faster the subdivisions, the more playing close to the bridge helps. closer to the neck is more percussive and deep, but if you go too fast over the neck its easy to lose the pitch of the note. closer to the bridge the pick attack and the note can both be heard. in general i find that fingers offer a lot more control over articulation. you can slap the string into the fingerboard and get a fast attack, or you can really grip the string for slower attack to make the band sound huge on the big accents but you sound like you know a thing or two haha

love all your info! Very helpful to me as a metal bassist. I wanna say 2 things though: If you haven't tried them yet, give Sadowsky Black Label Steel strings a try. They sound a little bit less bright than DAddario Pro Steels for example but for me, they hardly change their tone. I just love them. Pro Steels I wanted to change after like 2 weeks (not recording, just playing) or 4 weeks at the latest. The Black Labels stay on for months and keep sounding great. And about playing approach: absolutely true that a pick will give you more clank, no question about it. It's not really a big deal to make a bass sound metal when playing fingerstyle though either. What you have to do is adjust your technique for metal (don't play like a pop, funk, whatever player) by not plucking in parallel to the body but hitting towards the body and make the strings bounce off the frets like with slap and of course you have to adjust your bass' setup to match your playing technique. Then it's very simple.

If you want grear clanky attack but play finger style, you need to attack the string downwards so that you're bouncing the string off the frets when you attack. That gives you really good clanky bite and is tons of fun. If your bass can't do that, lower the action until you can.

Have to say it took me 17 years to get a pick and stop fiddling around with pedals and other gear to get a metal sound I wanted. Yes you can get a great sound with fingers when strings are less than 1 hour old and hit the shit out of your fingers in the studio... but then there is the pick.

Hey now, I play with my fingers in a metal band. Instead of traditional plucking the strings, I do finger slap (a bit like a thumb slap but using index, middle and ring finger). I tap down on the string, at a slight angle and get my dangle dangle from the strings hitting the frets. Using an active Schecter Stiletto Extreme 4: I set the bridge pickup to half open, neck to half open, and crank the active full and volume wide open. I strike right behind the neck pickup. Ironically, I use a pick for mellow chords and clean melodic parts. But hey, we're all different and find different techniques to solve the same problems. If that's not your thing, then listen Kristian. Always great vids.

Freaking killer tone! I would end up playing the intro to Helpless from Garage Days till someone eventually walked up and slapped me in the freaking face. Lol! Stainless steel strings eh? Unless the frets are also Stainless, I’m seeing fret munch and luthier payments on the horizon. I put Blue Steel cryogenically treated strings on my modded Agile LP guitar, and the “munch munch” was very much (munch) real. Fret wire quality is more important than “tonewood” IMPO.🤔 I used to bass in a pop punk touring outfit back in the day, and Rotosound was my brand of choice, but nowadays I grab whatever. Will definitely look at some stainless sets next time I’m shopping. Boiling strings also helps when you’re broke, sleeping in a van, showering at truck stops while surviving on propane burner black bean & rice burritos, peanut butter, and bag salad eaten with store “borrowed” dressing & your bare fucking hands whilst on tour. Um, so I’ve been... Um... Told? Lmao! I dig that cross fader with this plugin. Back in the day, to get that dAngle and kLaNk* (Extinction Level Event & Jamie King are local NC acquaintances of mine BTW) required dual tracks consisting of a mic’d amp & SansAmp DI. I’ve also tried tracking a second performance with a Green Russian Muff, or other dirt box, over the initial clean track with chorus, compression, and EQ added per desired mixing taste. Look at that... I’m rambling and oversharing.😐 I do that.🤷🏻♂️ My bad.😬 Really digging the channel amigo. I’m not exactly a “modern metal” enthusiast per say, but I definitely dig the knowledgeable intel you are successfully attempting to provide to the noob kid masses. Bravo dude.🤘

Here's the fun thought, bass brings the bite and attack that the guitar tends to lose with more processing. Might have teach the bass player how to use the pick and fingers at different parts of the string for best results. For instance, closer to the bridge with the pick for faster single notes, or when you want the low end to carry the groove, use a finger nearer the neck.

Great bass tone, as much as everyone loves a huge guitar tone, IMO leaving plenty of room for the rhythm section to sound big often tends to result in a more aggressive sound overall, even though the guitars might not sound as huge. One of my favorite examples is the Outsider album by Comeback Kid, that album sounds mean as hell even though (or because) the guitars leave the low end wide open for the bass.

The dängle sound has nothing to do with pick or fingers, it's about attack. I get a dängliger sound with my fingers because I use really low action and strike down towards the fretboard (Jack Gibson from Exodus is a prime example of this technique). It doesn't really matter what playing style you use, as long as you get the attack, fresh strings (not steel or nickel, just fresh), distortion and EQ right. You did get a really good tone though and I did learn some things here. Something I do is add a multiband compressor after the distortion and EQ. I compress the hell out of the high mids and low highs and then boost them to get that consistent clanky high end to really jump out and punch the listener in the face

Sure you can get a clanky tone with your fingers. It’s just more work and hardly any Bassist can pull it by off. They think they do though 🤪 And even if it works: why use your fingers to get a nail into the wall if you can use a hammer?

Parallax is nice too! I agree.

Neural DSP Parallax also has built in parallel comp in one plugin. But they DO sound quite different!

Yes, I’m not a fan of Parallax though. To me it always sounds a little artificial

finger playing can be clanky: you just need to hit the frets (which is quite ofter the case with low action)
