#1 Rule for buying any new vehicle - never be a payment buyer. Always be a price buyer. Have a financing source and interest rate locked in before you even set foot in a dealership.

I just pay cash. Don't like the idea of getting into debt, especially on something that begins to lose value the second you sign the bill of sale.

@ mister hat Not sure where you live, but I’m in NYC (Queens). Houses here are $650k-1+ million and I’m not talking sprawling mansions, but 3-4 bedroom 1-2 bath homes on typically 40x100 foot parcel of land. Sometimes60x100. But rarely. Even attached house 18 feet wide go for $500-800k+. It’s insane. That said not many coins pay cash for a house here!!

Great advice, thanks for this post, Adam! We come from a dealer background, and you are right about timing. Being able to walk away is key. If you don't like the salesperson's attitude, say goodbye. Always remember, it's just a car/truck. You LIKE the car, you don't love the car. And yes... watch out for the F&I office... they've just begun to work you over when you walk in there! If you are trading in a car that you haven't finished the payments on... beware! They will roll the difference of what you still owe vs. trade-in wholesale value, into your payments. So now you may owe more than the new vehicle is worth! That's no problem though, they'll sell you a mandatory product called "gap insurance", which is also added to the final cost. It will make up the difference, should you drive the new vehicle off the lot and total it. Generally, a bit of education on the subject, and planning your purchase well in advance of when you need it gives you lots of time to find/make the best deal.

When I buy a used car, we have the car picked out ahead of time. In the sales cubical I stand up with my arm crossed and my keys in my hand, don't take a offer of a free coffee. I will always start with a very low offer saying, "out the door---all fees and taxes included." I bought cars this way for both my kids. When I got a used pickup for work it was marked $21,000 on the windshield, long story short I got it for $10,000 out the door with a full tank of gas. Years back my dad taught me this, his main thing was never sit in the cubical and hold your car keys in your hand in view of the salesperson. I line up a buyer for my old car/truck ahead of time and sell it the next day after coming home with the new truck.

I don't see myself ever buying a new car ever again. I've bought my last 3 cars CPO, letting someone else take the depreciation bath. My previous car was a BMW 640 - $90K new, CPO $40K with 30K miles on it and 2 years of factory warranty. Thank you rich guys! (drove it for 2 years and traded it in at $30K!)

One thing that people sometimes overlook is that if you get gap insurance and pay the vehicle off early, contact the dealer and ask for a refund of the balance of the gap insurance. It’s like a bonus for early pay off. Also end of year incentives really kick in after Christmas so dealers can avoid inventory tax.

This is an excellent and quite timely video. I always buy used vehicles and the last one I bought was with a friend who is an excellent backyard mechanic who brought along a code reader. I paid him $200.00 for this service, which included $60.00 for his gas since he drove. The seller had no problem with my friend plugging the code reader into the vehicle to check for codes, which luckily it didn't have any. These code readers have gotten a lot cheaper over the years, as low as $39.99 the last time I checked at Harbor Freight and Walkmart. The one my friend had was on the lower price end, and it did everything quite well. My friend also got up underneath the vehicle and checked for brakes leaking, shocks leaking or exhaust leaks. He also got underneath the car far enough with a flashlight to check for transmission or oil leaks. Finally, he got under the hood and checked fluid levels and radiator coolant level as well as for coolant leaks. And I let him take it for the test drive,. Overall, having him with me made all the difference. The vehicle has had minimal problems in the two years since purchased, mainly starter replacement and brakes redone, as well as a new battery---that's it. So, I highly recommend this to anyone going to look for a used vehicle.

Great advice Adam. I've used these all before, and with success, especially the end of month advice. Another basic tenet is to Never discuss your trade in until you've already negotiated the bottom line best deal on the new vehicle. This helps prevent smoke and mirrors with the numbers. Get the best deal, THEN ask what they'll give you for your trade in.

All good negotiating points, Adam. Here's a twist that has worked well for me. Go into each of the 3 or 4 dealerships you are considering. Find a sales rep, introduce yourself and tell them what you are looking for in terms of model. Find one on their lot that you consider a candidate, drive it and look it over, but don't talk price or terms at all. Tell them you are looking at a couple other candidates around the area and their contact info, giving them yours too. Thank them for their time and leave. Once you've done this at other dealers, start the negotiating by email or text. When you get the best and final price, terms, go back to that dealer and finish the deal. This remote method of negotiating takes much less time and drama than sitting in their little cubicle waiting for the sales manager to come back with a counter offer, etc. The key is to visit each dealer, find a sales rep, establish that you are a real person looking to buy a car. If you convince them you are a serious buyer, and not a flake jerking them around, they will go thru the back and forth via text/email to get that best and final, out the door price. This has worked for me multiple times.

Shop around! Be a little patient and be flexible when it comes to your wide variety of options. My family managed to snag two great deals in the past few years- a new truck in June of 2020, and a used car back in April. The key is to avoid being desperate- let the dealers and sales come after you! Also, know fair market values for what you're buying, selling, or trading.

All good points. I’ve also heard that calling dealers and asking what the oldest vehicle is on their lot that they are desperate to move along. Also, don’t be afraid to travel. I’ve bought two new vehicles that were over 500 miles away due to the good deals they had. Get a one way plane ticket, Uber to the dealer and road trip it home. The third technique I’ve used is to search for vehicles delivered to the wrong market. Examples - manual transmission vehicles in heavy traffic urban areas, black vehicles in the south, two wheel drive vehicles in the snow belt, etc. I’ve scored two great vehicle deals using these techniques.

All good points. I've also found that if I don't have a particular dealer in mind, Truecar can be a great resource to quickly distinguish what dealers are pricey and what ones are willing to deal. I've saved thousands that way and saved tons of time and frustration which is equally important.
@ronpillar9963 Жыл бұрын
Keep in mind, with respect to F&I "add-on's" that if it's taxable, it's negotiable. Just because the dealer wants to charge you $1,999 for an extended warranty (which is taxable) then tell them it's too expensive and I want to pay $1,000 for it. You can't get a better price if you don't ask. Worse case scenario is you walk away from that item and buy an extended warranty in the aftermarket. Or walk away from the vehicle sale. If a dealer thinks they are going to lose a sale in F&I you will be getting their attention. Also, I would focus on the final price of the vehicle and not a monthly payment. Salespeople do this work for a living and we only come in every few years so it's easy to let them lead the payment conversation..."how much are you looking to spend every month?" "Where do you want your payment to be?" None of your business...how much is the damn car out the door? There are numerous payment calculators on the web that I can calculate that to within a couple of bucks so I know what I want to spend monthly, but negotiate the vehicle price not a monthly payment. Trust me, if you are negotiating a monthly payment the salesperson will be happy to oblige you and get you into the worlds most expensive Chevy Spark you've ever seen.

I have only bought three new cars off the lot, 1975 Scout II, 1985 LaBaron Convertible and a 2005 Focus ZXW. All others, I custom order as there are very few cars on the lot I wanted. Last one was my 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk. It was the best choice of a lot of poor choices to fit my need to recreation tow behind my Motor Home without exceeding the tow hitch capabilities.

@@Henry_Jones I did love the ZXW and if it had not have rusted out, I would not have bought the Cherokee. Only had 140,000 miles on it and ran like a top. I loved the Gas Mileage and the capacity in the back. I also liked the Beige interior. That is one of the things I hated was no choice other than black for the vehicles I wanted to order or other crap I didn't want. One of the Equinox versions only came with the Sun Roof if I wanted the Diesel and the advanced safety packages. Others came with a small Turbo Engine where the Owners manual said Premium fuel recommended. Even the Jeep could not be ordered with the V-6 and the transfer case needed for recreation towing in the Overland, only the 4 cylinder turbo or the Trailhawk with the V-6 I wanted. Poor choices all around. I miss the old days where even the cigarette lighter and heater were options. Remember my dad ordering his 1961 Ford where there were three choices, No heater, Standard Re-circulation heater and the Deluxe Heater. So many more choices and not the take it or leave it packages you now are offered. Oh well, hopefully this will be the last vehicle I have to buy in my remaining lifetime.

I want to relate buying my new 2022 Mustang GT convertible: I walked in to the large Ford dealer in the Southern California resort city where I have my winter home ... they would order it and tack on $10,000 to MSRP. I laughed in their face, thanked them for their time and walked out NEVER to return! An hour later it was ordered by phone at the dealership in the small Michigan town near my summer cabin (and legal primary residence). When it came in I got a $1,500 discount off MSRP. Not to even mention the 6% MI sales tax vs. 9.25% CA. Anyone can buy a car in any state and register it in any state. While living in Florida for 16 years I bought vehicles in TX, SC, MT, MI and FL - whoever will give me the best deal. And my brand new Ranger pickup was on AutoTrader in SC and $3,000 less for the identical truck than I was quoted by several MI and FL dealers - the next day I flew there, they had a car and driver waiting for me and after arriving at the dealer I was on my way in 30 minutes. That truck now has 188,176 miles and has needed 3 repairs beyond routine maintenance.

Sorry Adam, but all I notice with your indoor chat is the AC outlet plate that is not painted. Lol. No seriously, these are all great points that you made and I wish I had learned how to deal with dealerships many years ago. I was the perfect pigeon and walked right Into their trap. It is very emotional for me to have all that back and forth crap that they put you through. I traded a four year old GT-R with 12,300 miles, all service done, new tires, one owner (me) and was convinced by them that their offer of trade was way over what it should be. I took 68k trade in, and the next day the car was on their website for 89,900 firm as a local, one owner pampered car with all the service paperwork etc. and it sold in less than two days. I do not begrudge them for making a profit because they must in order to stay in business but I truly think that the system is broken when they know all the tricks to take advantage of people on both the buying and selling end. This was Hendrick Nissan in Kansas City which thankfully is no longer in business.

1 thing to know. You have FAR more negotiating power on a new car than a used car for the reasons listed in this vid. Used cars are all 1 of a kind. Yes there are thousands of used camrys but theyre all different mileage and different condition. You also cant get oem financing on used cars which means a higher rate. So everyone typically says go used its not always true. New cars sell for a reason. My new odyssey I had 3 dealers fighting for the sale, my used accord...they told me take it or leave it and didnt care if I walked.

My problem right now is that there really aren’t any new cars that excite me enough to want to buy them! If I was in the market for another “daily driver” right now I would probably be more inclined to take a few months and scour eBay for the best low-mileage, pristine condition, older vehicle I could find that would be an acceptable choice for my needs. Two of my last three vehicles were purchased this way and both have worked out great! In 2016 I purchased a 2008 Ford Taurus with only 3400 miles on it and I think I paid $11,000 dollars for it. It was literally in showroom condition and now has a shade over 60k on the odometer and has been a very reliable vehicle that barely made a “blip” on my financial landscape. Earlier this year, I picked up a 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup with 36,000 original miles on it for my son to drive as his first vehicle. The thing is in AMAZING condition, it only set me back $8100, and I have had a ton of fun out in the garage just tinkering on the little service items that needed to be addressed after 20 years to ensure that it’s in tip-top mechanical condition for everyday use! The one new vehicle I have purchased lately was a Ford Escape that I picked up on Memorial Day weekend in 2019. The driver of that purchase, quite frankly, was that the factory incentives were so good at the time (last year of that body style and just before the redesigned 2020 models hit the dealer lots) that I simply couldn’t pass them by! Especially when you consider what the landscape for new vehicles has been since that time, I feel like I was just in the right place at the right time as far as that purchase was concerned - sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good…….😂
@P.Galore Жыл бұрын
If you phrase the conversation as you suggest, a good sales person will say he can't quote you payments without seeing your credit - and that is true. You MUST physically go the showroom to get a realistic price. Dealers will lowball you over the phone and send you all over creation trying to get a better deal. Having sold BMW's and worked as a Finance Mgr for 15 years take Adam's advice about buying a car on the 32nd of the month. Other than that - given you have good credit or funds available - be willing to buy off the lot immediately. On a lease you want the lowest payment - price is irrelevant; on a purchase you do want the lowest price.

Always go with getting financed through your personal bank or credit union that you've been banking with. Credit unions often provide lower interest rates than banks. By doing it that way, you can avoid hearing that classic dealer tactic of "your financing fell-through at the last minute" but luckily there's this even higher interest rate loan available to you as your only saving grace. Relying on the dealer to get you financed with their lending partners just gives the dealer more kickback for their pocket.

They are designed for the seller of them (not the buyer) to make money. That said, some people do benefit from them in the long run. If you drive your car like a bat out of hell, it might be a good idea.

@@Henry_Jones Hi Henry, agree totally! But with "young-timer" cars, I've elected to go with a specialist -- or trained my "ordinary mechanic" to be one! Though with my own research/parts sourcing. I have heard, however, that the Range Rover extended service package is worth it -- especially since each air spring costs $1000 as does the E-brake as does everything else! HNY !!!

Putting nitrogen in your tires is complete nonsens, and paying extra for something you can’t even check is insane. My dad bought a new Toyota years ago and he paid extra to have the car undercoated. Later I found out his car was never undercoated😖 Aside from that they keep selling him stuff the car doesn’t need when it’s in for service. Be careful out there...

What about paying cash?
@Henry_Jones Жыл бұрын
Ive done that. Dealers hate cash payers. Its better to finance then payoff the loan in full. The dealer will give you a better deal if you finance with them cuz they get kickbacks from the bank. Just make sure theres no strings attached...like paying off the loan early lol.

Ive only purchased 1 new car, a 2016 Honda Odyssey. Buying new is the way to go for a minivan because used minivan interiors are TRASHED even after their detailed they looked like garbage cuz theyre used minivans. Im sure 3 row crossover interiors are the same now cuz lets face it theyre minivans with doors that swing instead of slide.

Even if I could afford a new car, I wouldn't buy one. Well, maybe a C8 Corvette. But that's it. I don't like modern vehicles. Too much unnecessary technology. Plus I hate crossovers and that's what most vehicles are now. I'm ready to go back to carburetors, points ignition and a manual transmission. I'm just so sick of sensors and computer chips

I hate buying/leasing cars the whole industry is a scam and should not be that way.. the process should be simple like going into a store and buying any other item and not to confuse untrained buyers with numbers that don't make sense to the normal person because all they are looking for is *_"what's my payment going to be"_* not realizing they are paying for hidden fees etc... I don't care how honest the salesman seems to be they all are bullshit artists they are taught to make as much money as they can. *_one keynote to anyone buying/leasing and using "their financing" whether it through the manufacturer of their bank look at the interest rate from what the bank is charging the dealer many times the dealer will knock on a few points on top of that to make extra money (have them show you from the bank not what they write down on the contract... if they can't or won't walk out_* *_they might give you a great deal on the car but for sure they will make it up in charging you more on the finance side_*

Recommendation: CarMax. When you compare their bottom line pricing on used daily drivers with the hassle of dealer haggling the bottom line is usually very comparable. Factor in the ease of the buying process and they are a no brainer to consider. Just bought for the third time from them and the only thing I did differently is bring my own credit union financing which they eagerly and painlessly accepted. Their trade in bid was untouchable from the three dealers I tried to work with. One tried to undercut their guaranteed offer by $2400! Tell me dealers are easy to deal with. Not! At least not right now.

Want a great listen? Listen to NPRs This American Lifes car dealership episode, 129 cars. They spend a month in a fca dealer in NJ and its about the lives of the sales staff during the month and the struggle to hit the sales quota. Awesome listen. I think it aired in 2013 but a google search will bring it up.
