Doctors do not ask you to buy off-the-shelf supplements for a reason. Medications are regulated evidence based research, "supplements" are an unregulated product of capitalism with zero checks or balances. It is not that the science behind it isn't real, it is that people watching this video are going to inherently interpret this as a way to navigate the "supplement" aisle at the store, which has ZERO regulation. Please, before doing another video on which supplements to take, review the literature on the accuracy and efficacy of the supplement market, and understand that anybody operating in that space is intentionally NOT operating in the pharmaceutical space BECAUSE of the lack of regulation, and the ongoing efforts to guide people towards the right "supplements" is a fallacy. If I am over reacting or misunderstanding, I am willing to listen, but from what I understand so far, any OTC supplements are rarely what they advertise, at best are sugar pills, at worst are illegal substances without consent.

Fun thing is trying to track your sleep- so far only fitbit seems to do a decent job with catching some awakes/ insomnia- all the other sleep trackers do a terrible job guessing, if you're an insomniac/ tossing and turning most of the night (apple, whoop, sleep 8, samsung, etc- you can be moving around, watching the clock, and they'll all put you randomly into a category of sleep) :/ And actual eeg devices aren't available anymore for consumers :/

Yep. I imagine that would be MORE pronounced if you’re crossing, say, 4hrs instead of 7.

I've been checked forwards and backwards and inside out and I have a pile of diagnoses that sorta explain some things, fibromyalgia, chiari, endometriosis and a few others. The most annoying thing is how often my blood levels are fine and my organs and other systems act like I'm not getting nutrients. The number of times I've heard the phrase "that can't be true" smh. Took 15yrs of severe iron deficiency to figure out my body can only get it from red meat (supplements caused endless vomiting of course) but I'm mostly stable now. Currently have a magnesium problem though and previously it was so bad (potassium was too) I nearly died. Idk if it was the potassium or magnesium but they gave me one in an IV and I have never felt pain like that before! They kept having to give me more morphine to get through it. @@christineg8151 serum magnesium levels are not really reliable for magnesium levels. The body will work extremely hard to keep potassium and magnesium levels steady in the bloodstream, otherwise you can die. It can affect heart rhythm. Magnesium in the red blood cells is what you want to check. Magnesium RBC is the test. Often insurance won’t pay for it. I get my checked yearly and I pay out of pocket. Keeping my magnesium RBC level high has helped me a lot. Cured life long hellish menstrual cramps and constipation. Helped with restless leg and insomnia. My muscle pain is better, chapped lips. Probably more that I am forgetting as I’ve been on it for close to 15 years now. If you decide to try this test, going for the higher end of the normal range is good. When I called an ambulance to take me to the hospital, the paramedic put the BP cuff on and when he started to inflate it my whole arm started to seize and I felt like my airway was closing up... When I got to the hospital and they ran the test and saw what was wrong, I had doctors constantly coming to my room to see the symptoms. They said "This is the type of thing we study about all of the time but never get to see". I had a massive electrolyte imbalance and practically no detectable calcium, magnesium or potassium. They put in an IV, had me on a bunch of electrolytes and a couple hours later the symptoms I was feeling for 3 weeks just disappeared. Moral of the story; electrolytes are no joke.

im into weightlifting and i been seeing which supplements are useful vs not and as far as multivitamins: magnesium,zinc, and vitamin D have been some of the core nutrients(along with others ofcourse) mentioned and one of which for promoting sleep so i decided to give a shot. also did a little research on the forms and unfortunately most supplements offer the oxide version which isnt very useful. Love seeing this kind of content and scishow really gives me comfort knowing im learning the right things

Depends on the magnesium. Depending on the quality. One magnesium helps a lot wirh my headaches. The other will just put me to sleep. Sulfate and oxide are laxatives. They arent meant to digest. Id even include citrate into that although it does help with mood. Theonate helps with sleep and mood, glycinate with all around health. If you're going to pick one pick Glycinate. Its neutral and works well enough.

I took a chemistry course that had a lab as well in college. One of the labs was to make a salt crystal. The start of it was to burn the magnesium. That's when I started to coughing so hard that I had to leave the room. I went to the bathroom and found that I had hives all over my face. I had to take an allergy tablet. I went back and showed the professor. He said he never seen anyone have an allergic reaction. It turned out I am pretty allergic to anything that has magnesium in it.

If you have a measurable deficiency, it seems obvious filling it should improve any associated symptoms. If you don't have a deficiency... more doesn't mean better. Your body can only use what it can use; the rest goes through you, or maybe accumulates, which is sometimes bad.
@Dan-uh9sg
@Dan-uh9sg Ай бұрын
Magnesium deficiency is usually diagnosed by symptoms. Supplements are cheap and the likelihood of overdose is low with reasonable usage. You can have a normal blood test and still be deficient in total body magnesium, which there isn’t really a test for. The blood tests are more useful for diagnosing hypermagnesemia

Physician scientist here: two major components of sleep dysruption were missed in this video, and a large body of evidence had already been established to show magnesium's benefit. The first is muscle tone. High dose magnesium reduces muscle tone. Muscles spasm in patients with spinal stenosis can be a major cause of delayed sleep onset and sleep arousal at night. Also, magnesium had been shown too relieve limb movement sleep disorders (eg. Restless Leg Syndrome) through this muscle relaxant effect. The second area with even more research support, including multiple meta analyses, is in pain reduction. Magnesium is a moderator of chronic pain via the NMDA receptor in the dorsal horn lamina III of the spinal cord. Studies of the use of high dose magnesium while under anesthesia for a whole host of major surgery has shown reductions in narcotic use, lower pain scores at rest, and reduced development of chronic pain. Admittedly the magnesium was given IV at loading doses of 30-50 mg/kg, but it was promising enough to open new research into high dose orally administered magnesium for chronic pain. I'm willing to bet that if these magnesium for sleep studies had been powered well enough to examine sub-groups, then we'd see sleep benefits in patients with anxiety as mentioned in the video, but also in patients with chronic pain, restless leg and other limb movement disorders of sleep, and patients with muscle spasms.

About two years ago, I started taking vitamin D supplements almost every day. It felt fine, and the D level in my system went up (from < 20 to around 80), but I realised I hardly slept. During one of those sleepless nights, I became terribly worried, I read the literature on the matter, and learnt that D ‘consumes’ magnesium. Immediately, I rushed to the fridge, ate about 100 g of dark chocolate, and … slept … finally. Since that night, I only take Vitamin D supplements with magnesium supplements - without any apparent adverse effects.

It was a great source of magnesium and balanced sodium/potassium.. I would suggest to look for something similar as a 'pure' NaCl replacement.

I've been using magnesium for anxiety and depression regularly for well over 7 years now, starting in high school when I was hesitant to both go to therapy and try any kind of medication. It turned out to be a real life saver too when I headed out to college the next year and was totally isolated from everyone and everything I knew. Plus, a warm drink when you're going through the ringer is going to have some soothing effect as well. Oh, and I can also confirm that overdoing it will turn your insides into outsides!

I did not know this kind of thing has made it to TikTok but I'll share my Testimonial as I was trying to figure out non-medicated ways to ease my Anxiety and Depression: it took a lot of trial and error and it still varies per brand but I've found Liposomal (so that it can bypass the blood-brain barrier) Magnesium L-Threonate makes a significant positive impact on both my Anxiety and Depression. I don't really notice it from direct effects, but when I forget to take it and my other mood supplement of L-Dopa (Mucuna Pruriens extract/velvet bean), I notice I end up back in my anxiety loops and feeling more doomed than I should. This combo has helped me more than the couple of medications I was able to try when I had access, plus they don't take 6 weeks to start working and there aren't any noticeable side effects either while taking nor when stopping. Plus I workout often and part of the year have a tough manual labor job so the magnesium is also a great bonus in relaxing muscles and reducing injuries and strain! (But I also take BCAA recovery drinks that work well for this as well.)

My doctor suggested magnesium glycinate to help me fall/stay asleep and to also help with my restless leg syndrome (a big contributor to my insomnia). The glycinate is more easily absorbed and less likely to act as a laxative than other forms of magnesium. I take it before bed with Vitamin D, and it truly does help!

You didn't mention magnesium l-threonate/ Magtein. It's the form that is best absorbed. It even crosses the blood-brain barrier, and it doesn't give you the runs. As a person with severe anxiety and CPTSD, I rely on it daily & highly recommend it.

Finally someone mentions my hero citrate! Glycinate is mentioned a lot in the comments and I've had people rave to me about that form in Discord. Sadly it did absolutely nothing to help my insomnia! Read how glycinate targets the brain while citrate instead focuses on the gut. Gut is often called the body's “second brain.” I take two 200mg citrate pills before bed and I can FEEL when the muscle relaxing effect kicks in.
