Hi Marija, Just wanted to pass quick comment. Loved the way you wrote backwards very quickly and clearly. Also loved that you spoke so clearly. Was unclear on the formula and how you transition from a fraction to a decimal especially where numbers are more complex like original price $289.99 and discounted price 149.99. Then the short-cut of "moving two decimal places" is not helpful to 11 or 12yo to understand why you move two decimal places. You are multiplying by 100 as all percentage is a value of 100 where the original amount is represented as 100.Other than that, keep up the great work. It is great to see female mathematicians getting on KZbin!)

it does work with decimals. Try increasing the retail and sale prices by the same amount. Say 10%. That makes the new retail price $4.40 and the new sale price $3.30. 4.4 - 3.3 = 1.1 1.1 / 4/4 = 0.25 or 25%

She left out a very important part. How do you get from 1/4 to .25. In her example it is easy because you have a simple fraction. but to get from 1/4 to .25 you need to perform an additional math step. You need to divide the fraction 1/4 to get to .25. divide 1 into 4 or always divide the top number by the bottom number. 4/1.

why not just divide 30 by 40 or what percent of 40 is 30, that is, the top is what percent of the bottom. that will give us .75 so we know we are paying 75% of the original price. To get the discount % just subtract 1 from the division result which will give us .25

I have been trying to figure out something for a while. Thank you. I knew that if you had an original number and multiplied it by a percentage and subtract that from the original number it would equal your end number. Example 40-(40*.25)=30 or a-(a*b)=c What I was trying to figure out was if I knew the percentage and the end number, what the original number would be. Example if I knew it was 25% and the answer was 30, what was the starting number. Long story short I didn't think of that. a=c/(1-b) or 40=30/(1-.25) which is 40=30/.75 Side note, I stumbled upon two things when trying to figure this out: If you know you have 25% you can take your c and add c/3. In other words 30+(30/3) or 30+(10) to get 40. The other thing is pretty neat but useless. a-(a/b)=-(c/b) and if you get lucky, your decimals will be repeating (try 465, 82%, and 83.7 as your a, b, and c respectively. -Cheers.

Math can be done so many ways, it's great! For this very simple situation, your algorithm is great too but if an item involved decimals and weird numbers, working out the way in this video could be the better alternative.
