I don’t have dense hair but I wanted thick locs. I combined my locs several times and now have 12 smedium locks that I can style in various ways. Not twisting did help thicken my hair so I semi-free form with a crotchet needle to maintain them. People aren’t used to seeing this so I get many compliments!

how long do you recommend waiting in the locing process before deciding to combine locs? im 6 months in and my locs are locked but not fully mature and I still have a lot of frizz

Does new growth determine volume?

I think it depends. New growth will typically create a voluminous look bc the locs aren't laying flat on your head for instance like a retwist. however, volume can be subjective depending on density and what an individual considers to be volume.
