sherrcon I’m a beginner and I’m struggling, it doesn’t help that this is my first dog. I’ll never give up tho. my GSD puppy is a drama queen, and very stubborn. She knows I got the goods but she doesn’t want to work for it. She can do it but she’s so damn lazy. She would lie down and look at me with sad eyes whenever I tell her to do something. She gives me the “i can do whatever I want boy” She’s a lazy bastard, it’s hilarious but it can be frustrating. She does things sometimes but her consistency is off. Unlike most dogs, she isn’t happy when she does a successful trick. She’s just like “alright ok I’ll do it, now hurry up and give me the treat boy!”

After watching 100’s of training videos on KZbin since bringing my new Aussie puppy home a few months ago; This is the FIRST video that’s actually given me any insight. Most trainers seem to just be going through the motions. I know and understand horses, and love training equines of all levels : especially “problem” horses. - I have the emotional connection, and training basics down with dogs as well, but have been searching for someone who has the ability to take that one step further. Just a little round of applause - you seem to really understand the mind of a K9!

It's called a "random reward schedule". There should not be any confusion if you have a solid marker. People's training would reach a whole new level if they would stop using treats, and make the dog work for it's food. No work, no food, we'll try next time.

A marker/click doesn't tell the dog they're RIGHT, it communicates that they've accessed reinforcement. When you mark using a bridge that is conditioned to mean reinforcement, over and over again without reinforcement, you weaken the marker. You can use praise to keep the dog up, but when you use a conditioned bridge like "yes" or a click, you should follow with reinforcement always. Also, you start the video luring your dog with a ball yet advise against the same thing with food.
@tomdavisofficial4 жыл бұрын
and when they have gotten access to the reinforcement they are right, that's why they get the reinforcement.
@CharlotteHoberg4 жыл бұрын
Upstate Canine Academy you say “good heel” “good sit” etc and repeat it a lot. Not only does the repeating weaken the cue, but it weakens your marker when you mark 100s of times and only reward every once in a while. Again, the marker is meant to clearly communicate to the dog they’ve accessed reinforcement, so if you don’t reinforce after a conditioned marker, you weaken it. And if your markers are not only inconsistent in their meaning, but you are not consistent with HOW you mark, then you’re just spewing word salad.

My gsd is so excited by treats that she stops listening entierly and will try every trick in the box. Including tricks I never taught her! So we've been training without food for a while now. Even having food on me will cause her to just loose focus on everything but the food. It's like anything I ask of her becomes a distraction from the food. With no food though, while other things can distract her I know I can draw her back to me with my voice alone.

@zebdawson36874 жыл бұрын
You might be giving treats too often. Stop using treats to praise for a while, let your dog forget they even exist. Their focus should then wander elsewhere, where you should be able to fill that void with a toy and build toy drive in your dog. Look up videos on how to build drive (or toy drive) in your dog, after getting rid of food treats for a while, you should be able to work with toys a lot more.

YEAH!!! About TIME someone did this!! I hate treat training, I refuse to do it for any reason if at all possible. I have bad hands and dogs that lick/bunt/nibble are extremely painful. I've always had much better results training them without food to the limits of their understanding, then just a tiny bit further, so they have to take you on trust---and it works. If you treat train, and something goes wrong....no food, no hope. A dog that trusts you to the max....that dog will do anything, simply because you said so. Be careful what you ask for....

The husky in my vids was put down in December 2019, but the brown lil guy is now a registered service dog. Both were abandoned mutts with no training that I got at almost 1 year old (not together, and the brown one had never been around dogs that weren't attacking him, he was used as bait). Tug definitely doesn't make an aggressive dog, for me it makes for a less aggressive dog in my experience.

Hey Tom. Last week I rescued a 2 year old Staffordshire. He's great in the house, but he's completely overstimulated outside ... to the point where I can't get his attention at all. I've started to use a prong collar with him, and he's begun to respond and anticipate my movements, heeling, stopping, changing direction, etc. with a loose leash, but he still startles very easily. A leaf blowing in his direction is enough to get him cowering behind my leg. I've only had him a week, and I definitely see improvement, but I'm wondering if you have any advice to help us form a connection outside the house and build his confidence. He came from an agricultural environment, and I live in an apartment in the city, so all the sights and sounds are new to him. I love your videos, and I've already learned a lot from watching you. I wont always have treats, or an ecollar etc., so training isnt considered done till I dont need any of those anymore. Treats are given at random and rarely, and usually during a desensitization or new training sessions. Its like a 1 out of 10 times treat, but 10 out of 10 they get some affection and affirmation, and they know they did good

Would love to see it with a barely trained dog. I don't and never had a dog remotely trained as well as this dog, probably because of lack of dedicated interaction. But from what I know is you need to teach the commands with reward. Ie. Pavlov experiment. Once the dog has the command burnt into its behavior then one could start employing these techniques. I have no food dependency problem, the real problem is how to win the dog over when he zones you out and nothing is good enough, specifically when he sees other dogs, my voice doesn't help , food doesn't help, a correction on the leash gets him to leave it for a moment but the focus stays on the other dog and he attempts another lunge a few seconds later , on which he gets corrected again... and it's an endless loop until we get farther from the dog... He's fairly young but I don't feel any good progress in that specific area for a while now. Any tips?

Guess the question is what do you do when your dog shows zero interest in treats or toys. At home or in quiet settings my hound dog Otis does well to listen. Treats are a good motivator, toys never really work. When we are out and about he shows zero interest in treats. I use a remote training collar that works well while we are out, he responds well to the tone on the collar. The next step in my mind is try to gain that same controll while we are out without the need for the training collar, but it seems to be a difficult task. Even more so now during the pandemic since I'm not really able to take Otis out in public which is the enviroment I'm trying to train him in.
@ghostelul3 жыл бұрын
You should try this.. if he’s pulling or not looking at you remove him from the distractions and ask him to look at you or say his name, or even to sit, then when he does take him back to the distraction and let him see it but if he doesn’t respond leave the area again until he listens to you or is non reactive to the distraction. Like with my shepsky dog she was Trying to run out the door or Jump up on it but I would not open it until she stopped or sat down I did this every time until she understood that’s not how she gets her way. Basically use the distraction as somewhat a reward.when he listens go closer but if he ignores you go away till he pays attention to you.

I have a 1 yrs old female gsd and a 9 week old male gsd. The female is nipping at the puppy. She doesn't let him play with toys. He then gets upset and bites her and they go at it. Is this normal or should I be doing something different.

Just goes to show, people are the real issue, not their dogs. Everyone watching should pay attention, myself included!
