could you have applied the second coat to the aluminum block instead of the rubber?? That would come in handy when installing longer weatherstrip like a trunk or door.
@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts 3 ай бұрын
Great question! And the answer is yes. Once you've applied and spread the adhesive on both the surface of the vehicle and the weatherstripping, you may apply that final thin bead on the vehicle surface. For projects with a large surface area, like a trunk, using this gluing method, we recommend installing 2-3 feet of rubber at a time. That prevents the glue from curing too quickly and allows you to take your time installing it. Thank you for watching!!

hello, great video! I have a question. can you use this rubber gasket adhesive technique to apply over a pre existing "peel-n-stick" adehsive. reason being, i need to redo the tonneau cover weather stripping and the underside is very rough, not smooth at all. im afraid the peel and stick i have will not bond with such a non porous surface.
@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts 7 жыл бұрын
You don't want to glue on top of a "dirty" surface. You'll want to get some adhesive cleaner and scrape off as much of the left over stuff as you can and then begin the process. If you want, you can check out our most recent video, "How to Install RV Slide Out Weatherstrip", to see how we clean and prep the surface before we install.

One thing that should’ve been mentioned is most glue is extremely temperature sensitive. If you’re doing this in a cold shop, it’s going to take far longer for the glue to get tacky.
@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts 6 ай бұрын
That is correct! And for warmer temperatures, the glue will tack up rather quickly. Thank you for mentioning that!

@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts Жыл бұрын
Hey Billy, great question! If you're installing a part into a groove or channel and it has a tight fit, using adhesive may not be necessary but it depends on the application. Essentially, if you have a good seal and the part is seated and not falling out of place, it’s probably ok. Thank you for watching!

I had the same question. I watched it after I did mine. :) Top corner of front windshield on both sides was loose on my motorhome and I was afraid water would be getting in. O'reillys auto told me to clean both sides of area with rubbing alcohol and then put a little (black weather stripping adhesive) on both sides. Let it get tacky and then push together and then tape over it for 24 hours. I did it just a couple of hours ago so I'll see how it turns out.

@SteeleRubberProducts 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Renee- yes, you can absolutely spot repair weatherstripping. Just prep the area, tuck a little adhesive in the loose parts, push it back down and let it cure for 24 hours and that should work perfectly. If you have any more questions, let us know. Thanks for watching!

Any film tapes you'd recommend instead of the typical 3m seal glue for those of us repairing existing seal bonds? not a fan of getting black un-removeable goop anywhere near my car's interior and have been amazed by the strength of 3M VHB tapes but not sure how they would work with foam-rubber seals. Just seems like a much easier path if it will work well and hold up.

Great question! We have a line of Peel-N-Stick seals that have 3M tape. Our 3M tape is heat applied tape, we put it through a process in our facility where both the tape and the rubber are heated so they are bonded together. It is a much cleaner process and the tape bonds very quickly with your car. Question. Now if you applied the new peel n stick and realized later after it set that you applied it backwards. Can it be removed and re-used?
@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts 3 ай бұрын
Great question! We don't recommend taking the seal off of the surface after it's been applied, even if it's just seconds after you initially press it into place. This is because it can compromise the efficacy of the seal. Now, with the scenario you are referring to, I'm assuming that might be hours later, and at that point, you probably would not be able to get the seal back off without damaging it. That is the #1 reason we always stress that doing a test fit is so important! You want to make sure you are installing your seal correctly, whether that is placement or orientation. Thank you for watching!

Good too know but try doing a long spot like all the way around the trunk while waiting for the cement to dry like in the second block ??? I liked the peel and stick unfortunately I have the cement one to do 😟easy peasy on little blocks !
@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great point, Ricki! We recommend breaking it up into shorter lengths, doing this process with 2-3 feet at a time will make it much easier for you. We realize the channel for a trunk seal is not flat like this surface we used just for demonstration, the goal is to spread the adhesive around to make it thinner and cover more surface for a more efficient seal. With a trunk channel, you can still use a popsicle stick to swirl and move around the adhesive across and up the channel wall a little so it doesn't stay in a beaded line. Same technique on your weatherstripping, then once both surfaces are tacky you can lay in it place and move on to the next 2-3 feet. If you're installing in an area with hot weather the glue will get tacky pretty quickly which can also make it easier for you. You do NOT have to let it fully cure with each 2-3 feet before moving on, once you have finished the entire trunk seal installation you need to let it cure at least 24 hours before shutting the trunk so that the seal doesn't move with the adhesive still wet. Thank you so much for watching!!

What product would you recommend for trunk seal rubber?
@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts Жыл бұрын
Hey there, great question! We recommend the 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive, it's what we are using in this video. It is designed for weatherstripping and an excellent choice for bonding rubber seals to a metal surface. This would work perfectly for your trunk seal, and just like in this video, we don't recommend putting too much adhesive on when installing. With a trunk seal, we recommend installing 3-4 feet at a time to ensure you're using the right amount of glue and taking your time to install it properly. Since you will have a channel, and not a flat surface like in this video, you can run a thin bead inside the channel and then smear it around with a popsicle stick to thin the glue out and cover a larger surface. I will attach a link to that glue on our website here: www.steelerubber.com/super-weatherstrip-adhesive-black-5-oz-96-8008-96 Please let us know if you'd like any further assistance with a trunk seal replacement. What is the best temperature to apply weatherstrip?
@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert! The best is room temperature. If it’s too cold (below 40F) the rubber is not going to be as supple and easy to work with. Also adhesive may not cure very quickly. If it’s too hot (90F and up) adhesives are going to react a bit different. Some adhesive will cure very fast, especially if it’s hot and in the sunlight. If surface temps are very high there may be some adhesives that won’t stick. Hope this helps!

Yes, most people do this wrong. Thanks guys for showing us the correct method. However, your test which compares the two methods of application is unfair because you did not let the adhesive dry on the first bar. Also, It would be cool to extend this video to conduct a test after the adhesive cures on the first bar and keep adding weight to each of the two bars to measure the amount of additional strength of the correct application method.

Do this by yourself an see how long it takes you doing 12" at a time.

@@SteeleRubberProducts What is the proper way to apply the adhesive if you have a U-shaped groove? Should only the metal lip have adhesive applied and then the weather strip groove gets fitted onto the lip?

Great question! We recommend adding the adhesive to the metal, then placing the U-shaped rubber on top of the metal with the adhesive on it.

easy to demo on blocks, how about a demo where it involves a trunk weatherstrip where both sides have to have glue on them??? I'd like to see that. Especially when you put glue on the weatherstrip and then you try and run it around to stick it down, not so easy... without getting glue all over the place.... You did a another video of a whole trunk weatherstrip going in, but you only glued one side, as it fit into a channel..

Hey Jeff, the intent of this specific video was to demonstrate the point of not using excessive amounts of glue when installing your weatherstripping. Since we manufacture the aftermarket weatherstripping based on the original parts that are sent to us, we don't have access to many classic cars to do more in depth installation videos. This is something we are in the works of changing! However, you are correct about the trunk weatherstrip, that is more intricate job than this short demonstration, and will take time. For new trunk seal installations, we recommend breaking it up into shorter lengths instead of trying to do the entire footing at one time. Only install 2-3 feet at a time while following this glueing technique will make it much easier for you. Same technique on your weatherstripping. Then, once both surfaces are tacky, you can lay in it place and move on to the next 2-3 feet. If you're installing in an area with hot weather the glue will get tacky pretty quickly which can also make it easier for you. You do NOT have to let it fully cure with each 2-3 feet before moving on, once you have finished the entire trunk seal installation, you need to let it cure at least 24 hours before shutting the trunk so that the seal doesn't move with the adhesive still wet. Please feel free to contact us via email (I will include a link to our contact us page) or give us a call with any questions you have regarding installation, or if you have questions about our products. Thank you so much for watching, and we hope this helps! www.steelerubber.com/contact

Really not that helpful when you consider that they gave no tips on removing the mold release from the new seal which is the biggest problem faced by novice installers. With these instructions you will install the seal and then find that it sticks to the paint but not to the seal. Now you have to start all over and possibly need to clean the dried adhesive off the car. Use rough sandpaper to scuff the weatherstrip sealing surface well, clean with detergent, let dry and then install. Come on Steele Rubber Products guy and Egge Speed Shops, you can do better.

Why would an instructional video need to be scientific? It plainly shows what it is intended to show.
