Wow, this hit deep in me. “People don’t buy what you paint, they buy why you paint.” I had to stop and take notes on this episode. Several Wilton Quotes will be appearing on my studio wall soon! Thank you for encouraging us to stay connected to our work, be authentic, and tell stories through visual art.

I love that...that "Art2Life is a movement to save the world through art". Omg Nick, thank you, this is beautiful, and all that you've shared is gold❤

Artists do not save the world my friend. When you understand that the world will reveal itself to you, the artist. In all its 'unsaved" glory.

I have stopped doing my art for years because of many difficulties but watching your videos has fired me back up and I have listened to your advice and it all works for me! Being free and easy with my thought pattern and not worrying about mistakes has made me feel more confident. Thank you!

Nick-- I'm amazed continually that although I feel surely I've heard everything you're thinking on your many podcasts, workshops -breadcrumbs and spark... why am I still often stopping what I'm doing to save your video or write a note. You are ever insightful and inspiring. Appreciating your ever multiplying loaves of bread ... May they never stop coming --Lue Schmidt

Thank you so much for your energy and wisdom! I kept wanting to press “like” over and over again as I watched this video to share my appreciation for your message about thinking bigger and the excitement you sparked in me. I want to make bigger art because I want to feel bigger! Looking forward to the future of being bigger and sharing my art work in a BIG way (because I have shared very little of what I have created). It’s time…..

Great podcast. Really respect your work. As you point out art can mean a lot of different things to different people. Ie a job, a career, a hobby or a passion. Having been consumed by a career in medicine art is my way out- a place of wonder and joy. For me art reveals who I am. There are some things you can try so hard to find or look for but they cannot be found. For me my inner self is revealed by my doing. I took CVP during Covid and it helped save my sanity and reignite my passion for art and music. It was a safe place for me. Things just seemed to fall into place and I am moving into my 2000sq foot studio this week. No clue where it will lead. I want to work big because I feel better expressing my art when I use more of my body than just my arm or hands. For me art allows me to express things that are deep and I may not consciously be aware. My most favorite paintings seemed to have painted themselves. I started with a color or a thought and ended up with something else that just comes out. It just makes me feel good when I get in that flow state. I do not need art to help me realize my potential and it feels better for me that way. No pressure.

Nice to hear your experiences and goals. I think the dean did you a favor asking smug questions. Frank Stella has said he thinks college programs or academic art often stiffles creativity. Keep up the positivity!

Nick, this was a fabulous episode! I figured out my “why” a few weeks ago when I first started following you. Art is a hobby to me. I want to make art because I cannot afford to buy YOUR art. So I want to diy it. Does this make any sense? I have learned many techniques from you and have purchased your paint for my own diy art “hobby”. I’ll send you a photo sometime. I feel confident I finally know my “why”! I’m just going to continue with my hobby. Thank you so much!

WOW, Nick! I consider you a wise and encouraging friend so I have to tell you that today’s episode opened a door for me….like a therapy session on Steroids! I Need to tell you why. Where do I start? With my VERY condensed story: Very smart, creative child, born to Depression Era parents of very traditional background, feels out of place in family portrait and unacceptable and graduates from High School with no sense of what to do in life. Starts College but doesn’t finish, gets married, has kids, and then realizes she maybe has some artistic talent that should have been nurtured. In an effort to do this, she takes some art classes at a community college and falls into teaching Adult Education….without a Degree!…..Who knew?? Definitely, as you said, not feeling qualified but did it anyway for the money! But teaching others wasn’t enough so she starts making her own stuff. She experiences some success in selling some of her work, but then, a family move puts her in another location where she is, once again, out of place! Kinda like your analogy of driving the car too fast….or off the road; back to teaching this time doesn’t work! New job, help sell other peoples work. More learning. More career experimenting. Finally, the urge to create begins to dominate and in the midst of a family crisis, as a release, she begins to create again, which leads her to taking classes for Herself……which eventually leads her to the Breadcrumbs Challenge and Nicholas Wilton and taking small steps and listening to her intuition. Now I recognize the randomness of my directions as being an artist, trying to find her true self without listening to her own voice or looking inward for direction. I guess if I could share One thing with other artists, it would be to take the time to really ask yourself what you are learning from what’s happening Now, before we jump to the next step without asking ourselves what We want and why. Today you gave us a simple set of questions to ask ourselves so we don’t get ahead of ourselves without seeing the right direction for our journey, to plan ahead, and read the road signs. The directions aren’t written on our arms. They’re not going to work if they come from others…..they are written in our hearts! Thank you for helping us clarify this!
