Yes, we made our own sweet potato grader. We used simple PVC pipes and spaced them according to USDA size grades to sort our sweet potatoes. It was a two layer sorter: first with PVC pipes which were 3.5 inches apart and second 2.25 inches apart. Any sweet potato above 3.5-inch were called Jumbo grade and sweet potato less than 1.5-inch diameter were categorized as small.

What fertiliser NPK rating do you use? Do you trim the vines or just let them run? Any other information you can give for a home grower would be appreciated :)

Hi Carol, Please find my responses below: 1. Amount of N is based on soil organic matter present. My plots had on average 2.5% organic matter and I applied between 80-100 lb N/A. With respect to P and K, recommendations are made based on soil test results. 2. No, I do not trim vines. I mow the vine before harvest and then dig the sweet potatoes out.

LOL the Asian supermarkets are selling the small ones as gourmet sweet potatoes. They are charging a premium for these, according to you, non-marketable sweet potatoes. LOL

Could you sell your bad ones to pig farmers? At least you can make some money off them, or do you use the compost in your fields? Great video

Yes, it would be a good way to efficiently use the bad sweet potatoes but I do not know how the pigs would respond to a rotting sweet potato (chuckle). The root will still have most of its nutritious charactersitcs except in portions that are rotting or disintegrated. Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), C, and B6. Additionally, they are a good source of dietary fiber. - Ajay Nair
