Grafting or air pruning? Try grafting but ever single time the graft dies but the seed is still alive. Have a little cado and 5 seedlings and still no luck 😅

Jorge and Yolanda. Thank you. With the names you have you are doing the right job. Both your names are of Greek origin: Jorge comes from Georgios which means "farmer". Yolanda comes from "Yolantha" which means "Violet". Thank you.

I took your advice that you gave. I asked if the tree has already set fruit. When can I take a cutting for scion wood. You said after the fruiting period when the new growth starts. The fruit was still hanging on the tree but new growth started with swollen buds on the growth. I took those cuttings 1 month ago and I grafted on to two of my seedlings. And yessssssss😁😁 the one is taking. New leaves are growing now on my graft. Yeeeesssss. So exciting. I'm actually headed into winter. We are in autumn now but I have my grafted tree indoors so it will be safe until spring. But thanks for that advice. My friend planted an avacado tree from seed but didn't have space to plant it out, and he gave it away to a family friend member and that guy planted it in the ground. That avacado tree grows better avacados than any variety I ever tasted. Creamy, sweet, it's huge avacados too. So now that I successfully grafted a tree in spring I'm going to try and get a cutting from that tree of my friend and try to grow it. Buy I just wanted to say thanks because I took your advice and it helped because I was unsure about when to take a cutting and what to look for.

@@SleepyLizard well when you do im looking forward to seeing it. im looking to put in trees but cant always find the fruit first. so if i change my mind and want a different variety it would be nice to keep the roots in place and just graft it to a different variety of the fruit.

Thanks for the information. Is there a particular variety of avocado that's the best rootstock?
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
Scott, not really. Avocados don't grow true to seed so every seed is a crap shoot. That said we do prefer to use the bigger seeds like from Waldin, Lula, and Choquette

They’ll grow right through parafilm. If you use grafting tape wait about a month after the graft takes

We graft all year long. As long as you can harvest budwood. If there's flowers or young fruit we leave the trees alone.

you can but we don't. Takes longer and you don't get a well developed root system like you do with a seedling.

Hi I bought some 8-10 months old healthy looking avocado seedlings from a nursery. All of them were supposed to be grafted but I could only see the grafting mark on a few of them. I was told that grafting marks often dissapear after some months. I just want to hear if that is correct or that you should be able to see the marks on all the seedlings you buy. Thanks.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
Johan, Grafting marks do not disappear after a few months. They are visible for years, sometimes for decades.

Hay Tom , It’s great to see your inspiring videos. I have a question. I grow avocado from the seeds. I have 6 saplings about 2 feet high now. I don’t have a mature avocado tree to have the buds to graft them. Could you suggest how to graft them to have fruits quickly? Can I just graft with each other saplings ? Will this help me to grow them for fruits ?
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
Hi Deepak, you need to graft cuttings from a mature fruit bearing tree. if you graft seedling to seedling you still have seedling.

You inspired to start growing avocado , I have about three hundred Avocado plants and are now ready for grafting, My question is, can I cut the cuttings from any grown tree even if it is has not yet born fruit yet?
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 2 жыл бұрын
Enala, you want to take from a tree that's already born fruit. that way you know you are taking cuttings from a tree that's reached the age of sexual maturity and also you know what the fruit will be like.

I'm a beginner gardener in SWFL. I've had an avocado seedling planted for the last year or so. I recently repotted it in a bigger pot, and it has a great root system and a strong stem. Is it too late to graft my seedling tree? Is it recommended to graft the seedling tree as soon as it is ready to be grafted? This video was so helpful. Could you also do a quick video going into more detail about what exactly is being cut in the beginning of the video? I'm going to look for a mature tree around me and see if I can get a cutting (with proper permission), but I'm not entirely sure where I should cut.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley, it's not too late to graft your seedling. You can graft at anytime. In fact I have a 20 year old tree I'm going to graft next month. I will do a vid in the future with more detail on how to select the cutting. You've got nurseries over there in southwest FL. I'm sure you can ask one of the workers to get you a cutting or two.
