A pumpkin usually will only grow for 90 to about 105 days after pollination. So that means at peak growth the pumpkin should be doing 30-40 pounds a day. Usually it stops after that or frost hits. Most growers will pollinate only on the main vine at about 10 feet to 18 feet. The main nutrient flow is on the main vine, so it is best to have just one pumpkin on the vine once your chosen pumpkin starts to take off.

If you didn't bury the vines in the past, do it this year and I bet you might be able to double those weights. At each leaf node, the vine will sprout new roots, so you can almost double your total roots by the end of the season by encouraging new root growth from the vines. Good luck!

Hi, I am a first-time grower from Belgium. I’m competing in a regional giant pumpkin competition. Since about a year we moved to a new house with a big garden that had a perfectly-sized patch which used to be a greenhouse. However I have no idea of the patch’s soil quality.. Since it used to be a greenhouse I assumed it was well-maintained soil. I planted my pumpkin in the middle of the patch, in a pit that I filled for 50% with compost/animal manure/organic fertilizer and 50% with soil. As the pumpkin grew I kept just 1 main vine and its sidevines, and I buried all of them to promote root formation. I pollinated in the beginning of July. In the following weeks I did not fertilize the soil of the patch that surrounded the plants base (where the vines were taking root), this might have been a mistake. Anyway about 2-3 weeks after pollination I started to notice spots on the leaves close to the pumpkin, these spots were in between the nerves and looked grayish/yellow dead foliage. Searching the internet I concluded that Magnesium or Manganese deficiency could be the problem so I treated the patch with +-400g of slow release MgO, +-5g of MgCl2 dissolved in water (which should work fast) and +-1g of MnCl2 dissolved in water. I also started fertilizing the whole patch with solid NPK pellets (12-12-12, about 3kg so far) that I mostly distributed along the vines. This seemed to stop the leaves from further deteriorating for a week or two. This week I started to notice that it seems to be progressing, and leaves are starting to become light green/dying starting at the leaf edges. It seems worse at old leaves that are close to the pumpkin, as the old leaves near the base of the plant are mostly okay. The leaves at the end of the main vain and side vines are also very healthy (and still growing). I have pictures that I could send which might give a better view of the state of certain leaves. I checked for pests but could not find any. Any idea what could be the cause? Could it still be too little fertilizer/magnesium? This would be in line with the fact that old leaves near the base of the plant are in good condition. As far as I know the plant is well-hydrated as it is not wilting in the heat of the day at noon. 35:40 are you saying the pumpkins with grow 25-40 pounds more EVERY DAY? So if it’s 25lbs on a Sunday and it gains 25 each day theoretically I would have a 150lb pumpkin by Saturday!? God damn

That is correct. A pumpkin will typically grow 90-100 days from the time it was pollinated. At around day 30 after pollination it will typically kick into high gear and if it has everything it needs it will grow 40 or even 50 pounds PER DAY. You can literally see the difference from morning to night. That growth rate will go 1-3 weeks and then starts tapering down. If you put a little math to the world record 2,624 pound pumpkin it averaged about 29 pounds per day for all 90 days which is crazy to think about.

I've done both. It somewhat depends on how things are positioned. I like to get as man vines as close to the pumpkin as I can, but eventually you have to take that vine off.

If i get seeds from a 2,000 pound pumpkin will they on average outgrow say a 1200 pound seed if i don't baby them? what i'm saying i guess is are the top tier seeds more use to being babied and or have inbreeding problems that make them more finicky?

I wish it worked that way. The potential genetically may be in the seed, but that isn't always the case. Each seed in a pumpkin is a child. So each seed from the same pumpkin will be a little different. The other piece is when a 2,000 pound pumpkin is grown, there was a lot of TLC, good soil, correct watering and good weather that happen. So the same seed may grow to 500 pounds or 2,000 pounds depending on the circumstances.

find a flower that has no tiny pumpkin on the bottom and cut it off the plant, this is a male flower, then take all the petals off so the pointy thing filled with pollen is exposed. then find a flower that has a tiny pumpkin on the bottom, this is a female flower, and rub the pointy thing of the male flower on the brain looking thing on the inside of the female flower. bam you pollinated it yourself and it will grow even better then natural pollination

With my sandy soil, I'm putting down a fair amount of water, but I couldn't tell you how many gallons. I mostly target keeping the soil lightly moist. Just under the surface of the soil I don't want it to dry out, but I also don't want it muddy. So I go more by feel than volume.

In the US it is basically illegal to export seeds without controlled testing and then potential approval from the USDA. If you're from India but live in the US- not a problem. But if you're asking someone to send seeds to India It isn't worth the court costs, probable, fines and possible jail time for the person you may ask this of. Smuggling is definitely illegal here- perhaps you have giant pumpkin growers in your country?

Sorry, somehow I missed your message. So I almost always go with a pumpkin that is on the main vine at least 10 feet from the stump. I'll pollinate all of the pumpkins on the main vine, but typically, the one I keep is going to be in the 11-15 feet range. I want the plant to get sufficiently large before the pumpkin starts taking off around day 28, so that 11-15 feet range on average works. Usually about 10 days after pollination if my chosen pumpkin is shiny and growing, I'll take the other pumpkins off the vine before it. I'll continue to pollinate after however, because you never know if that first one will abort. I'll take the other ones off if the main one is growing nicely after a bit however.

Let's say that I am choosing the pumpkin on the main stem. The question is, is it a good idea to cut the stem just after the chosen pumpkin?...so the plant send all the power into the pumpkin?

@@makismarkatopoulos7914 there is a bit of a debate on that, so different opinions. Some cut the main vine after the pumpkin so you don't have stress on the main vine as the pumpkin gets big. My thought is that you let the main vine grow. I saw a presentation in March from one grower that grew a 2,000+ pound pumpkin who lost the stump due to rot on the same week the pumpkin got pollinated. He grow the plant with a diamond shaped pattern to the vines where the vines where shortest near the stump and at the vine tip at the end of the season and longest near the pumpkin. I like that strategy best. Because it means all of those extra leaves are close to the pumpkin and mostly feeding the pumpkin rather than other parts of the plant.

There isn't a magic bullet to growing a giant pumpkin. It is death by a thousand cuts when it comes to pumpkin growing. No magic fertilizer or magic seed. The point is that there are a LOT of points to grow a 1,000 or 2,000 pound pumpkin.
