My thin fabric pots are probably the reason why my plants do “just ok”. I live probably a few miles from you and my plants seem to do much better in the fall and early spring than the summer because of how dry it is. I’d love to try out these bags. Love the idea that they have a liner. I wish they came in black and had handles! Handles are really helpful when I need to reposition a plant, especially since I have some disabilities.

You can probably finagle a liner by inserting / clipping / sewing a food grade bird seed / farm animal feed or cat/dog food bag liner inside your existing bags in the same manner. The bags that feel tarp-like, not the paper plastic-lined ones. I already bought a number of regular grow bags myself and don't have the budget (or room...I live in an apartment) to invest in more at this time. I have collected large bird and cat feed bags. Most of which I repurposed to do a potato growing experiment. I have a couple of extra leftover and will be trying this grow bag liner format. One of my big problems is watering and fertilizing on a schedule. Especially in deep summer. I just came up with a slow drip waterer with repurposed Arizona green tea + ginseng 34 oz. bottles. Total water reservoir capacity lands at about 40-42 oz. The bottles are sturdy and can be found cheap at Dollar tree. The standard 32 oz Gatorade bottles are 2nd best. The other DIY designs I've seen drip too fast. The way I set mine up greatly minimizes evaporation as well. It's not elaborate at all. Nor expensive to do. All you need is household items you probably already have on hand. I left details on the construction on the one vid he has on the channel going over drip irrigation. Not too many comments there compared to this video. It was in reply to an Amy S. if you're interested since it's kind of a lot to retype again. 😏 Works for keeping your plants alive while on vacation as well. I've gotten steady drips once every 15-45 seconds vs. every ~5 seconds shown on a lot of the other DIY vids.

Nowadays for my location anyway we have both type of climates during the summer. Crazy rainy weather between heat waves so fabric seems to not be a good option unless you have a self-watering system.

What I did was put a plant saucer under the bag. That helped tremendously with preventing the soil from drying out. I've grown potatoes, peppers, and tomatoes in grow bags. I would love to try something like a cucumber so I can let it sprawl with out endangering other plants.

@@deenataylor9015 it would if you lived in a place that wasn’t as arid as us. If you’re in, say, Michigan, you might not do it. But we regularly have 6% humidity in the summer so everything evaporates SUPER quickly.

I grow lots of cucumbers in mine. Last year I did an experiment and was able to do cukes in a 1 gallon container - though you have to water twice a day and give them full strength fish fert weekly, but it did work. My other cukes are in grow bags (7gal) and they’re super happy. :)

I had never heard of grow bags until this year. I have already bought a few different kinds to try out. This is the first year that I will be doing a real vegetable garden. I've always wondered how effective grow bags were. My main concern was how much water they would need. I imagined water would evaporate pretty quickly thru them, necessitating constant watering. Nice to know this company has addressed this issue with the liner. And I didn't know that grow bags encourage root pruning. Will definitely have to give these a try.

Thanks for this video Brian. With my small veg garden I'm always trying to find new ways to get more vegetables growing and pots seem to be the best way. Not sure where I'll find room to put them or what to grow in them yet lol. I already grow lettuce, spinach and multiplier onions (green onions) in small wooden boxes I made and keep on the back porch in amongst my pots of herbs. I am the queen of putting in too much effort to have nothing work well in the garden (says my husband). I am going to finally prove him wrong this year with grow bags! I grow in fabric pots. Last year i did corn in 2 this year 4. I also did squash in a large one. Love the fabric containers. I did have the drying out issue and did drip irrigation. And had no issues since!

My whole garden is in containers. I've grown peppers, determinate and indeterminate tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons and squash. My containers are 5 gallon buckets with lots of drilled holes for water drainage. Thank you for the videos!! My favorites so far are the companion plant ones. Asparagus takes a year to actually produce for eating, granted I live here in Illinois, I planted it last year, and hoping that it comes back this year! After that it is supposed to almost be like a weed it grows so fast.

@@Nancy-ch3vx The first year they are going to look a lot like dill, you won't get aspargus the first year, depending on how large of a container, let them be the first year they should be strong enough the second year to split, aspargus can handle the illinois weather so I can only give you advise from this area, not sure how it is in California.

I have recently started getting into vegetable and fruit gardening and it has been an eye opening, learning and joyful journey for me. I would have looked at the grow bag and not think anything of it and lo and behold there is more to that grow bag than what I would have thought. My grand son's school (he is 10 years) are asking for volunteers to be part of the school's newly formed eco-gardening project with the students. I feel inadequate as I do not have much knowledge to contribute. I suppose they would accept volunteers who can provide the muscles as much as ones with experience 🙂

I live in Colorado. Cold and very dry. I like using bags because we have unpredictable weather, including sudden snow in June. A bags allows me to grab them and move them into my garage for days like that. These bags seem much better for growing here. Will definitely get some

I grew tomatillos in black felt pots. I had to water twice a day. Never again. My hubby grew a peach tree close to my raised bed. Too much shade and no peaches to boot. Aye, aye, aye! I find your videos very informative. I've learned quite a lot. I continue to re-watch them. First time starting vegetable plants by seed. Really enjoying watching the plants grow. Also attempting winter sowing. Not doing well with this. I'm attempting container growing and had bought some fabric pots for this season. We'll see how things go this season. Have not had any luck previous seasons in plastic pots. Usually get plants from garden centers. Last year none of my plants grew (stunted) or they were eaten by the local bunnies. Usually my green thumb is nonexistent. Hopefully with all the information I've learned from your videos I will grow a green thumb. Thank you for all the wonderful content.

Great tips and I needed them since I have planted in #5 tubs/totes. I planted carrots, spinach, leaf lettuce, radishes, potatoes and squash. Since these are all big totes, after hearing your information about the roots, I realized I could have planted all, but the potatoes in smaller totes. Oh well, it’s a learning experience. Once my radishes are ready to harvest I’ll plant something that needs lots of room to grow in and do my next batch of radishes in something smaller. Oh, I’d love to have some of them growing bags! I’m trying to convert to all containers by next year. Ground gardening is just to hard on me the older I get. Thanks again for the great info! We appreciate you, Brian!

These grow pots seem much better than the black ones I have potatoes growing in currently. The potatoes are growing well, but it is the first crop that has done so. I love that these have liners. We grew a few potatoes in a fabric pot last year. It was a sort of experiment. I say “we”, but it was my son, and he didn’t research. Had I known that, I would’ve been all over that pot! They didn’t continuously mound the soil up over the nodes as the plant grew. They did water it, of course. It did not die, and we got several rather small potatoes. If we plant potatoes again, I’ll definitely get in there.

I too live in a very dry climate in southern New Mexico. When you showed the lined fabric it pricked my interest. I bought some regular grow bags and just filled this past week. First time trying them so I don’t have experience to compare yet. This was a very helpful video.

Many years ago I grew Bell Peppers very successfully in 1 gallon plastic milk bottles. Cut them so that the handles were retained in order to hang by a 1 inch metal conduit pipe system held up by 4x4's. Did this because I am a quadriplegic and needed a 'raised' system to reach the plants. This was long before fancy ''table styled' raised beds were developed. Have since gone onto using 1-10 gallon Nursery pots on shelves of Decking boards fitted through concrete building blocks. Thanks for the info about the number grade on the bottom of these pots........had no idea about that. The bags are another idea I will try.

I love my fabric grow bags. My one gallon bags are hard to keep moist, so I put them in a kiddie pool with a couple inches of water. I use grass clippings for mulch, and that keeps my other bags moist. I water every third dry day except when it's super hot. I'm in Missouri where it stays pretty humid and rains often enough.

Raised beds and containers have become my go to. With a smallish yard, poor soil, active dog, and a high varmit population there’s not much point in planting in ground. Currently using a recycled galvanized trash can, a 10 gallon plastic bucket and a 28” x 28” x 24” raised bed with a cypress frame and corrugated metal sides (salvaged from a neighbors unsuccessful rabbit hutch). The raised bed and garbage can started as compost projects for a year before planting anything in them and still have a substantial worm population. Have made some improvements based on lessons learned and will make more based on your videos.

Love the fabric pot idea - I've only grown in soil bags. I buy a huge bag of potting soil, cut it in half, plant my tomato or two in the bag, puncture it for drainage and then stake with bamboo stakes. I'm incredibly excited about trying the fabric pots! Thanks for the video!

I've just started using fabric pots, so far potatoes and tomatoes LOVE them. I live in mid-Illinois so we're at the mercy of the weather so I've yet to test them to the extreme. Most of my containers are roughly-made wooden bushel baskets (Rural King for five bucks!) And they are great on a variety of plants. Potatoes really took off in those.

It gets windy here in the summer and things dry out. I do grow in fabric pots, but have put the pots with many different types of veggies and fruits in them. Then they go into an old kiddie pool with holes 1” above the bottom for easy watering. Thank you for the information about size of pots for different plants. I needed this.

Those pink dahlias are so beautiful and healthy looking! I tried growing peppers and herbs in Walmart bags last year with moderate success. I’m in San Marcos, CA - just couldn’t keep up with watering, plus we don’t get enough sun. The bags barely made it through 1 season before falling apart.

Really excited to try these new bags. I have used fabric bags for growing potatoes but our climate is not dry. Being home all day is helpful as I can keep an eye on them. We have to use whatever means we have to increase food production for our families and neighbors. Appreciate the ideas AND glimpses of your gardens... Great ideas! TY!!

I do only container and raised bed gardening here in the mountain area of NC. The soil consists of rock and a form of clay. I am retired and growing some of my food certainly helps with expenses. Thank you for all your tips and info.

I grew sweet potatoes last year in fabric bags. They were on the small side. This year I'm growing golden potatoes in them. I have to water every other day to keep them moist. I like the idea of combining both moisture barrier and air strips. I'll look at these bags for my summer/fall garden.

Love your videos Brian. I learn so much from them. I have used those black fabric pots with poor results. They take so much water and after a couple of years in the sun they were useless. I am in Bear Valley Springs in the Tehachapi mountains. We have lots of microclimate up here, I think I am 8A. Lots of challenges with wildlife here too.The pots would allow me to start inside earlier under grow lights and move outside after last frost. Tomatoes don't go out until after Mother's day up here. Lost our greenhouse last year in a huge tornado-like windstorm last year. 😢

Here in zone 7b things are just getting started. I cannot wait for homegrown tomatoes this year! 🍅 We have half our tomatoes in raised beds and the rest will go in containers for a total of almost 40 plants. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for all the information. I have recently moved to a small yard. I now have to grow vertically and in containers. The information you provide is excellent. I am planning to grow radish, peas, squash/zucchini, cucumbers, carrots, parsnip and Kohlrabi. I’m making notes regarding everything. I’m also attempting some hanging vegetable growing

Thank you! I grow a lot of things in grow bags. I especially love to grow potatoes because it's easy to just dump them out and get your potatoes. I grew sweet potatoes and mint in grow bags and they escaped into the yard. I've even grown malabar spinach and other vining plants in grow bags. It's amazing what you can grow if you just try it.
