hey max, do you have any videos or resources geared towards drumming beginners? i like your stuff, and your perspective on things. i am a guitarist/bassist but i'm picking up the drums so i can make a two piece happen, i'm practicing every day trying to get to the point where i can even incorporate doubles on bass drum, my foot coordination is zero still. i think my drumming heroes being people like zach hill, brian chippendale, damon che, is a kind of adversity to beginning because the play that i idolize is just so advanced and difficult. there are zero songs on my favorites that i can say "oh i will try to learn this part" it will take me years to get to the point where i can even begin to cover Lucky Father Brown or anything by Hella.

Hey esobrev! I am completely self-taught, so I don't have many resources to point you towards. I can try and make some more beginner friendly drum videos. 'Cutting the strings' between each arm / leg so they can move independently is a huge piece of drumming but does take a long time. Focus on very easy hands if you want to build your foot skill, and very easy feet if you want to focus on working on hands. Let me see what I can come up with in the next few weeks. Thanks for watching!

Rudiments rudiments rudiments… sorry there’s no way to avoid them. Look up Moeller technique (there’s a great video of Jim Chapin demonstrating it), push pull/open close technique. Once you develop your hands and can play the major rudiments (single, double, triple stroke roll, paradiddle, 5 stroke roll, flam, drag, probably a few more depending on who you ask but these are the ones I use most) consistently, evenly, and most importantly with relaxed hands, including all the accents, start experimenting with them on the kit, working your feet in. Go slow. For example, when playing a paradiddle, maybe throw a kick in there, or play the diddle on the toms. Play around with that. At a very basic level, that’s a lot of what Zach does. Taking standard rudiments and playing them around the kit at blistering fast speed. Congrats you just learned linear drumming. I recommend broadening your scope though. I know you want to be able to play hella stuff, but that kind of speed takes years and years to develop, and you’ll just piss yourself off in the meantime trying to get there, which makes it more likely that you’ll drop it. If drumming isn’t fun, why do it? Also there’s added benefit to learning other genres, it reveals your weak spots and increases your flexibility and ability to improvise. I’m primarily a rock drummer, but forcing myself to learn Latin, Afro, funk, disco grooves are when I notice the biggest improvement in my playing. Last thing: look up ostinato foot patterns, learn some, and play rudiments with your hands over top of them. Most days before I practice I’ll warm up by playing a samba foot pattern on the kick and hi hat and play rudiments over that (Alan Dawson rudiment ritual) Hope this helps some. Good luck man.

@@maxxisntboredhey dude i wanna say 3 months of practice later and i am seeing a lot of progress. all great art is hard work and there’s no way around it. even my doubles on the kick are starting to take shape. when i don’t have my kit i play on my practice pad, when i don’t have my practice pad i play on my legs. last night i brought my drum sticks to the beach and i played on my fucking SHOES for like 3 hours. i’m putting in the work and that’s why im seeing results. we’re in this together ❤
