Can blueberries survive on 50% peatmoss and 50% wood chips only?
Using a planting mix composed solely of 50% peat moss and 50% wood chips would not be ideal for growing blueberries. While both peat moss and wood chips have their benefits, they lack some essential components necessary for healthy blueberry growth.
Nutrient Balance: Peat moss and wood chips alone do not provide the necessary nutrients in the right balance for blueberries. Blueberries have specific nutrient requirements, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as micronutrients. Without these nutrients, the plants would likely suffer from deficiencies and struggle to thrive.
pH: While peat moss can help in acidifying the soil, it might not be sufficient to maintain the optimal pH range for blueberries (between 4.5 and 5.5). Additionally, wood chips may not contribute enough acidity to the mix.
Drainage: While wood chips can improve drainage, using them alone in a 50/50 mix with peat moss might result in excessive drainage and poor water retention, especially since peat moss tends to retain moisture.
Organic Matter: While wood chips provide organic matter, they need to be composted or aged properly to avoid nitrogen depletion as they decompose. Without proper decomposition, they may compete with blueberry plants for nitrogen.
To successfully grow blueberries, it's recommended to use a more balanced planting mix that includes components like peat moss, aged compost, perlite or coarse sand for drainage, and possibly some acidic amendments to adjust the pH. This will ensure that the soil provides the necessary nutrients, acidity, and drainage for healthy blueberry growth.

No need to bring plants inside It’s sunny California. You should have the same thing in Arizona just put some shade over it for anything over 100° temperature.

Thanks for such an informative video. Can we use vermicompost in the potting mix? I made my potting mix by combining: peat moss + vermicompost + pomice stone + sand+ soil Is it ok? ,,, or i should remove some ingredients??? My plant not looks happy?

Hello @birdyofficial, Well I want you to buy a very expensive drink. Now the straw that your going to used has many, many holes on the straw. When you try to drink your drink. How much of that expensive drink are you going to take in? All your ingredients you have for your blueberry is soil. I don’t know what kind of soil it is but that’s all the blueberry is getting. Vermiculite, pumice, and sand are all for drainage. The peat moss is for holding in moisture only. So your blueberries don’t have any nutritional minerals or value in the soil because they’re being washed away. You have too much drainage. The only thing you have is soil, and the Pete Moss is keeping in moisture, but not holding the water being lost. I written a book on planting blueberries and its s very detail. Much better than my video. The book is at the publisher as soon as it’s available. I will let you know if you write in the comments your name and telling me you want the book thank you. I hope I help you.

Oh, did you watch my video? Blueberries need acidic soil with a pH of 4.5 to 5.5. This is why your blueberries are dying and would not survive because your pH is not correct, you had no nutrients vitamins in the soil for the microorganisms or the blueberries. Where are you located? What is your planning zone?

Hello Visar Brestovci, Thank you for your question. I did say in the video that peat moss is for holding moisture only. So in pots you only want to put peat moss on top. If you watch the video again you will hear me talk about monitoring (29:04) the blue berries. This is so you have good drainage (7:39). Please remember that peat moss has no nutritional value, it's just to hold moisture.
