Thank you so much for the videos. It was very educating. Escrow closed on my 2.5 acres in the northern Mohave Desert, just one mile east of the Sierra Nevada range foothills one month ago and I am anxious to get my garden in full swing. Our climates are pretty different but I have always loved Eucalyptus trees and I am very happy to say I already have 13 of them on the property and the tallest ones are about 70 feet tall. I will be using your videos to harvest the seeds for the many additional tress I am going to plant. Thanks!

That is great! You should be able to grow some really cool exotic plants in your zone. Some great palms too, but palms that like higher heat and less rainfall,. Brahea armata, Chamaerops humilis, etc. I bet all sorts of neat Eucalyptus will do good there too

Got a question for since you know what your talking about. I have some silver dollar and true blues that have just sprouted, well, should I put them in the sun uncovered? I have them in a Jiffy greenhouse, but I do not have them in the sun. I have them sitting in my screened in porch and shaded. I really don’t know what to do now since they have sprouted. I found out the hard way a couple of times that these things are super delicate. I do blame some of that on my impatience though. They are at about a quarter of a inch tall if that helps with the size. Your help would be greatly appreciated so I don’t kill these seedlings as well, haha.
@BananaJSSI5 жыл бұрын
You will have to gradually expose them to full sun or they may fry because they are not acclimatised to it. Since they were in dappled light it would be a risk with full sun exposure on such tiny plants. They grow very fast so give them some sun exposure each day until they can handle it full time
@julianmcalister32475 жыл бұрын
I will give that a go. Thank you for your feedback/answer. I have a sentimental liking to this particular plants because I grew up with them when I was younger. The smell brings me back every time and is my happy place. I just don’t want my next memory as being myself killing them, haha. I said a little more than I should, but what the hell. It is what it is. Thank you again!!

i have some gum sprouts the tip of the leaves are turning yellow do you have any idea why i started them by sticking in styrofoam and floating in water till roots started now i have them in bay window 50/50 peat moss and perlit giving them plenty of water because i did not want to shock them by taking from water to dry soil the have had first leaves for three 1-3 days now do i need to take them out the sun till there bigger or use less water. o my perlite is the miracle grow kind it has fertilizer in it i did not know when i bought it i’m new to growing trees
@BananaJSSI7 жыл бұрын
I know if they have to much water / waterlogged it will start to show up on the leaves. You can keep them in sun so they don't get leggy and transplant them to single pots with a sterilized potting soil and perlite mix. Perlite helps with drainage

I live in Australia, lots of Eucalyptus trees here.. I always thought they needed a fire and some smoke to somehow get the seeds going.. I picked a lot of different seed pods from Eucalypts today.. was going to try and sprout some. put the nuts to dry and hopefully get seeds from. I wanted to get seeds from a old Tuart tree but those trees are so tall you can't reach the seed capsule/gumnuts

Hi Joe. I live in Zone 6. Several years now, I have started Eucalyptus trees from seeds. Started in the spring and once the weather breaks I bring them outside. They always grown fantastic. Growing anywhere from 3 to 4 feet tall. In the fall before it gets cold, I bring them inside under a sun/heat lighting, giving them about 8 hrs of light. They continue to get larger, but then about 3 months later they start to dry up and die. Any suggestions?
@BananaJSSI6 жыл бұрын
I know it is very tricky to grow larger Eucs. indoors. The roots quickly fill their post and they become root bound easily. Thus the soil dries out fast. You think they may be getting watered enough at times, but often the water rolls off the surface and down the inside edge of the pot. Always best to grow them outdoors if you can

In the ground our established Eucalyptus trees we never water. In thye seed flats you have to check them pretty much daily in a hot greenhouse because the seed flats tend to dry out fast in the high temperatures
