First off, thanks for the videos. We live in the Canadian Rockies and grow great garlic. We mulch in the fall, but only to keep the weeds away. We get hard frosts (2 or 3 feet deep) and it does not adversely effect the garlic at all. We also top up the straw mulch in the spring for the same reasons of weed control and moisture retention. Miles of smiles...

Hello. New subscribers here: This week husband and I decided. Yep garlic and ginger and tumeric is expensive and it's what we buy the most. We have a house with enormous back yard. Problem is, it's a fenced yard and we can't figure out how the neighborhood rabbits get in and eat out vegetables, so we decided to plant the three roots, hoping that the rabbits will hate it and it be a deterrent to them. Lol.. . We are retired and tired and arthritic but we still love to garden and seeing things grow. So thank you so much honey. We will follow you because we enjoyed your video and all your advice and tips. Thanks

I like your comment about growing corn, I have the same opinion of potatoes, its so cheap in the store so why bother LOL!.. I planted some garlic cloves around September, I put mine about 3-4 inches deep. Nothing came up and it was also quite dry at the time. Around January when the warm weather came, garlic shoots came up (zone 6b-7). Anticipating home grown garlic from the grocery store, out of one bulb there was 2-3 large cloves and even some of the small ones are growing.. Next time I will try planting them shallow like in this video.

There's a local farm that sells a varietal called Music at the farmer's market, and it's the single BEST garlic I've ever had! Hardneck and just the most amazing spicy pungency. It's like garlic flavor on steroids. I'm looking forward to attempting to grow my own this year, because I use so much of it that it gets pretty damn expensive at $3/head (where are all these cheap farmer's markets people apparently go to, LOL).

I'm just curious about the 2 planting situation. If it over winters, why can't we plant in Spring where there is frost. If we are planting in a frost area, and planting in fall, obviously the garlic will be subject to frost or freeze. But if we plant in spring, then there wouldn't be any chance of freeze or frost at all, so I don't see how that is a factor determine when to plant.

dude garlic is cold weather it loves winter u need to plant it in the autumn. just don't plant too early or it will grow before winter. plant it deep and cover it with mulch.
@bhawthorne5654
@bhawthorne5654 6 жыл бұрын
you plant in fall bc it gives the roots a chance to establish before dormancy. if you planted in spring before frost lifts you'd have new roots still and they'd freeze burn.. by putting in in fall, roots are established and get below frost line. so by spring when the frost hits, they've already got established roots below the frost line
