Nature doesn't have a refrigerator outside. I plant our seeds in October in locations of our property. Use potting soil, peat moss, and little sand. They are covered in a about 1 - 2 inches. Pack down and water. I stake close by and place a metal wired cage around the site. Keeps animals from digging them up. Next spring, most grow and breaking ground. Last spring planting now are 3 - 6 feet high. Our 3 -4 year old trees are already producing. 5 mature trees are producing so much. Good luck. I like nature grow our trees, no containers, no frig, and much handling.

Thank you for this great video! I was sad to discover the ancient conker tree nearby has been felled, so I am having a go to germinate some conkers to plant in its place.

Exactly the same reason here, the local council is going to cut the tree down because it's a danger 😢 We have collected loads of conkers and are trying to germinate them. Also it's right on the corner to our street and been a beacon when we return home. so when we move, we will hopefully have it's "children" with us lol

Sadly, all 25 of the Horse Chesnutt, that passed the float test, failed to grow and died. I managed to save 7 of the small trees growing from the ground before they cut the grass around the tree. Only 1 has survived and doing well. It has not helped this year with the Excessive amount of Slugs in the UK gardens. They ate almost all but this last one, which I had to raise off the ground and put a big bucket of water on each of the support legs for the holder of the tree pot Plus a massive circle of salt around the buckets, topped up every 3 days lol. The tree in question, has been postponed being cut down for 1 more year, so I have this autumn to collect more "Conkers" and get them planted and growing.

The ones in the paper towel & box you let germinate too long. Checking them more often & planting as soon as they’ve sprouted will help prevent them from molding & growing super long tails.

I put two Conkers in separate pots on 25th November 2023 & over the last week it’s now Tuesday 09th of January 2024 they have both started growing roots. I have them just below the soil surface & I noticed a white crack on one of the shells after I gave them a good cold watering so I assumed one had in fact started to sprout.

Question. WHEN do you do this? In October, when you can pick the conkers? In the spring? Do the conkers need to get cold/frozen beforehand, or do they germinate despite not haveing been cold? (Like oaks do). Also, do you keep them indoors, or outdoors for the germination?
@chasethemorninguk
@chasethemorninguk 2 жыл бұрын
I did exactly as the video (picked them in September time) and immersed in water for a week or so then put in takeaway containers in damp kitchen towels in the dark for a month. They have germinated fine and have been potted. I didn’t think it would work but it does.

This time I was cold stratifying Common Horse-Chestnut seeds in the refrigerator but they did not germinate at all. All of them have failed to germinate. The reason why they did not germinate is because I did not store the seeds properly. I stored them in the warm room temperature. What is the temperature for storing horse chestnut seeds before stratification? Where should I store Common Horse-Chestnut seeds before cold stratifying them? Where can I store those seeds at? Which one is the best seed storage location before stratification? Please make sure that you should reply to my comment.

Mine are starting to look a lot like yours at 10:45, do you have any advice for what I should do as they keep growing? I've got two planted in the ground in a planter we have, but I've put plastic bottles around them to protect them, I also have some others in plastic pots that have roots, but haven't got stems yet, what should I do with them once they grow out? thanks.

Hi Nathan thanks for watching my channel. I will be growing a few in containers to keep in my garden as I have no soil to put them, the rest I will sell as people have ordered them. I still have a few that I did last year in pots and plastic bottles they do grow really slowly so you can keep them for a few years. I am going to see have many years I can keep them in pots. Hope this is helpful to you please let me know if you like to know anything else..thanks again for watching.
