Here I'm showing you how to setup an Ostracod Culture and giving tips on growing green water. Ostracods are tiny freshwater crustaceans and they're often called Seedshrimp because of their small size.
Ostracods make excellent live foods for certain fish and they're just fun to watch. Think of Seedshrimp like sea monekys, just easier to take care of!
Seedshrimp can be found in most bodies of water either freshwater, brackish and even saltwater oceanic habitats. Our Ostracods are a freshwater variety.
Ostracods typically feed on algae though they do enjoy fish flake foods and dried algae tablets. They're an important part of your aquarium clean up crew. They shouldn't be exterminated or exposed to chemicals. Finding Seedshrimp in your aquarium is a sign of a healthy ecosystem.
I began raising seed shrimp as food for a wild Darter fish that would not take fish flakes. This was almost a year ago and I'm happy to report that our Darter is doing extremely well! Ostracod cultures do great when combined with Detritus worms and other small Invertebrates.
Seedshrimp lay two kinds of eggs, much like other aquatic invertebrates. Normal eggs hatch pretty quickly and Winter eggs must be dried out completely. When those winter eggs are again exposed to water they will hatch.
When you notice your population of Ostracods is decreasing that's a good time to take them out of the tank. Dry out the sand and refill the container after a few days. You'll notice a MASSIVE population explosion as the winter eggs then hatch.
Freshwater Ostracoda go through eight moult stages before they mature. Their life span varies from one month in temporary ponds to a year or longer in larger water basins. Most free-living Ostracods are considered to feed on algae and organic detritus, but some Seedshrimp are omnivores, scavengers and some are even predatory!
When searching for wild Seedshrimp I suggest looking in calm ponds, larger puddles and ant ditches that hold water. Occasionally you can find their dry-time eggs in such places as well.
Fighting against Seedshrimp or trying to eradicate them from a fish tank is a waste of time and money. You'll only damage your aquarium when you try to fight mother nature. Ostracods are useful fun pets and should be treated with love. To lower their numbers you should instead add fish like Guppies, Gambusia, Darters and other predatory pets.
Seedshrimp are small crustaceans, typically around 1 mm in size, but varying from 0.2 to a relatively HUGE 30 mm in the case of Gigantocypris. Their bodies are flattened from side to side and protected by a bivalve-like, chitin shell. The hinge of the two valves is in the upper region of the body. Ostracods are grouped together based on basic size and shape.
