One of my favorite kale dishes is kale, sweet potato, caramelized onion saute, with thyme and garlic. Delicious! Then next morning, I take leftovers and put some in a small fry pan with a lid and heat it up on low, crack two eggs on top and slow cook until the whites are done... this makes a fabulous breakfast dish. (The moisture from the veggies will create steam which helps cook the eggs to perfection, and I like them just a little runny. You can cook as thorough as you like. I learned this from watching Alex Guornacelli.)

I love that you let your neighbors enjoy the fruits of your labors. I am here because my son is interested in the community garden but I only know how to handle corn and tomatoes!! We found a plant we couldn't figure out and finally found it. It was Kale and he's excited to try it but first we have to learn how to harvest it so here we are! We will be watching your channel now. 😊

Thanks so much for these videos of how the plant looks start to finish! I can’t wait to get my kale started again. I tried my luck direct sowing kale and Swiss chard into my raised garden beds first week of July. They sprouted but haven’t grown much. I’m going to sow new seeds indoors and then transplant again when it’s not as hot! This newbie appreciates very much all the info you provide.

Great info on cross pollination!! My curly kale lasted from last year under a cover and is now developing shoots that I will cut off to make more plants because kale is now my favorite plant. Thanks!!

Thank you for the video. I live in Ontario Canada and I am planning to save a couple of my kale plants for seeds next year. Should I keep the ones I planted in April or do I have to start a new batch in the Fall for seed collection purpose? Thank you!
@SustainableStace
@SustainableStace 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Grace - welcome to the channel! A fellow Canadian - wahoo :) Keep the ones you planted in April for seeds. You'll likely need to wait until next year to get seeds from them. They will eagerly try to cross pollinate with other cabbage family plants so . . .. you need to be aware of that. Wishing you great seed saving success!

Still havent a clue how to harvest. A leaf here and there? Or chop whole thing off?
@SustainableStace
@SustainableStace Жыл бұрын
Great question - pick a few leaves, NOT all at once. You always want quite a few of the 'solar panels' in place and so, little bit at a time.

I need all the help I can get, I have a kale plant in a pot, they call it a salad pot, and it also has lettuce, tomato, parsley, marigold, and curly kale, like you said. I live in an apartment and in my bedroom which has a balcony facing east, is all I have to control sunshine with. I know absolutely nothing about plants, like soil, water, fertilizer, and food maintenance. I get very overwhelmed with all the information online. Especially when they confuse you with the balances of nitrogen and potassium...some, will say, 10-10-10 and others will say, 4-3-6, so yeah I don't get it. My room is dry, and I have a rainmate, not sure if that will help create humidity around the plants or not. I have a fan and an a/c unit, which I tend to need on in the summertime. I just found out, I am not to be moving my plants around. So yeah, I am really quite clueless...will accept all the help I can get though.

Hi Rose - You've got a bunch of easy to grow plants and they know how to grow all on their own. A decent size pot, in sun and out of the cold, should do great in Kelowna from June onward. Kale could be outside now with likely no problem. If you can get a handful or two of organic compost or some fish fertilizer onto that it'll likely be very happy. Water once per week when it's cool (like now) and probably twice per week when it's warmer. Ensure it can drain enough so that roots aren't submerged. That's tough on the plants when it's cold - like now! Good luck - you can do it Rose :)

How can I seed safe a vegetable like kale or carrots in Southern Manitoba zone 3a?
@SustainableStace
@SustainableStace 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucie, This is a great question. Best case you get 90 days to grow. Worst case maybe only 60 - right? 1. Kale - i'd start indoors and transplant in Late May or early June. Ideally, put it in a garden bed with Row Cover aka Remay Cloth on it. Here's a video that explains that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqeTZHmDg5eGb5o 2. Carrots - a bit trickier I think b/c you cannot transplant these. So, I'd start them in early/mid June under row cover and trust that with 70-80 days you'll get nice carrots. Good luck :)

Why are you growing all these different kale variety and cabbage in close proximity and saving seeds, it's a waste of time with all that cross pollination.

Agreed - I point this out around the 7' mark ! Anyone saving seeds needs a way to navigate those challenges and . . . I do :)

First time planting kale in a large planter on my deck. Will the vegetable come back next year since you said it has a two year seed lifecycle? Do I leave what is left after I pick all the leaves and just wait until next spring?
