I absolutely love these type of Hoya and you have just pinned down the reason I have killed all the plants I have owned. I don’t own either of those Hoyas. I had a Curtisii a long time ago but it died very fast so I decided that must not be one for me. I love this type of video where you go more in depth on the care for just a couple of Hoyas. It’s easier for the info to be absorbed by my old brain😊 Thanks Miro! 🌱💚🌱

Oh you should try it again! Sometimes the first tries are not great for whatever reason and then you get the plant again and it grows well :) I would give her at least one more chance :D

Great video! My hoya serpens blooms almost each year (bought in 2013) and I find the scent very much like faint Stargazer lilies, not all all unpleasant. I've grown mine in leca for several years and found this to be the best method for my habits and conditions. Props have done well in my humidity cabinet, but it won't bloom for me unless kept in cooler conditions, near a window. I am convinced the cool temps in Jan-March are what initiates blooms.

I am glad to hear you think it is a pleasant smell. Some people say it's like... urin :D Well, in January-March the days are shorter too :) I will see if it can bloom towards the fall. but I know people bloomed it in 25 degrees :)

Another very informative video. I am looking for a serpens and will keep all this in mind. A year ago I purchased a curtisii and it came in a hanger pot full of plant. I have never repotted it nor do I know what it is potted in. There is so much growth. I just keep trying to slowly untangle it. Now I know not to change the pot. It does have a drip tray under the pot but makes a mess when I water. I found these hanger drip trays that hook onto the pot to collect water. So like you said I will leave it alone and maybe take some cuttings. Thank you for always giving us you knowledge.

If your curtisii has been thriving for a year, I would leave it :) It has probably acustomed to the mix & your care with the mix. We don't always need to react :D I hope you can find a nice Hoya serpens!

Hi, I live in New Zealand & have just purchased a Hoya Serpensii & Hoya Sheperdii. After watching yr clip I am worried! Our summers are quite humid & winters are very cold but I have a small ,enclosed front porch, which other plants love,esp. ferns. I have a Hoya Carnosa that flowered after 5 or 6 years & being ignorant of its propertys, picked off the flower node! I am going to plant the Serpens in a small bird cage ,put the mix in, which will be relatively flat , perfect for the spreading of the Serpens. Any other info would be great,please.

I've notice that the hoyas that has many airial roots (as curtisii) like to grow on a moss pole. Mine was not going anywhere and the ends of the stamps was always dry, so I tied it to the moss pole and try to keep the pole wet and it start to grow very well

Yes, Hoya curtisii also has the same growing habit like serpens and tengchongensis - they are crawlers, they like to root everywhere along the stem.

I bought an 8" pot of Curtisii. Bought it like that. I have never changed the soil. Honestly it's in sh!t soil from the big box store 😂. But I've been too afraid to repot it. Its grown a ton in the last 6 months or so. I took a bunch of cuttings and it exploded in growth. It's in an east facing window (I think). I water about every 2 weeks I think. When the pot is light. Though I think it's time for a repot into a more airy mix. Moving into the cooler months is retaining more water and it's starting to look a little sad

Brilliant timing! I've just acquired Hoya curtisii - both Thai and Philippines - three days ago. My little H serpens is hanging on with my general care practice down here in the Tassie winter but I saw a grower in New Zealand who uses tree fern fibre and high humidity (she uses a dome I think) and encourages her plant to grow along a fibrous branch. I have some porous petrified coral and I thought I might give the same set up a whirl using that as a horizontal/diagonal support. I also have some bonsai dishes I thought might suit H curtisii when they size up.

My serpens died 😢, but my curtsii is growing like crazy. Hanging in a Southwest window, she is very full and more than 1 meter long, and I water her about every other week. I take her outside and water her till its dripping out of the bottom. She has not yet bloomed for me. Thx for this very informative video!

My Hoya serpens bloomed very recently and I can confirm that the flowers are very stinky. I agree with you that the best way to grow these Hoyas to let me root in multiple points along the stem. This also makes them more drought tolerant in my experience. My Hoya serpens survived a period of major neglect last winter where so many plants including many Hoyas did not survive.

Hi, I'm from the Netherlands, and I haven't seen Hoya serpens in Dutch webshops for quite some time. I have a Hoya serpens that I rerooted twice and she is living in a shallow terra cotta pot in cocopeat now. She did well for a year, and now she's blooming, but I see signs of root rot in some leaves again. Luckily she roots easily!

I heard they had it recently in GrowJungle, but I think those were smaller what we got in late 2019. Those were big big pots for 20e. I am still sad I didn't snatch a big one :D So nice to hear that she is blooming! What does it smell like?

@@BasiePlants I looked it up, Growjungle had smalll pots indeed. I grew my big pot from 1 cutting. When the plant got root rot, I could take a lot of cuttings and now the plant has 50 peduncles :-D. The flowers smell like plumeria, frangipane, once they are completely open. When they were first opening, the smell was rather unpleasant. I'm very careful with this one, she is very unforgiving and I noticed that it's important she dries up quickly. I water her when she's almost completely dry now, and the shallow pot is ideal. I made two pots, and put one in my northern facing window and the other under a skylight. The one in the northern window didn't survive, it does need a lot of light. I checked the shriveled leaves, luckily it's just one cutting that didn't do well, the rest is ok 😊.

I really want a serpens, they are so cute! I almost bought one last week, but decided against it for now... it's probably a good idea since I'm still learning to take care of the hoyas I do have! I did purchase two dischidas online that are quite similar to the serpens (major & hirsuta), visually anyway. I haven't gotten them yet, but hopefully these will quell my desire for the serpens. And i'm having enough issues with trying to get my mathilde to grow!

Dischidia hirsuta is such a great idea instead of serpens! Especially if you want overall look of serpens, but don't care about the flowers. I would never think of that! Mathilde is easy and fast for me. Have you tried treating it for mites?

@@BasiePlants I've yet to experience flowers! My obovata has a peduncle and my australis has two, and I've very excited! I really do love the leaves though and base purchases on that initially. I'm super wary about treating anything for anything because I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. My mathilde put out a number of leaves when I first got her but I figured she stopped because of winter. But now it's July! I was going to put her on a tiny trellis next to see if that helps! (To be honest, my krimson queen is doing the same thing... they were from the same seller so maybe something IS happening that I need to treat). Ahhh sorry to ramble on

You could try covering the top of the pot with seram wrap. You have a lot of hoyas so I get the struggle of not being willing to baby a single plant, but I found higher humidity of some sort around the area to be the best way to root things like string of turtles, string of hearts, etc... haven't had any failed props since doing this. You have a tent so it's the same thing, but I thought I'd say it nonetheless for the less fortunate souls like myself who don't have a 100% humidity enclosure for these sort of tactical maneuvers hahaha

No need, she is a carnosa, you can grow her normally :) Usually hanging, but it can be done on a ladder. I think most prefer to hang her :)

Well now I am confused because I thought I had serpens but it now looks more like what you show as tengchongensis. Be that as it may, my "serpens" started as two cuttings from a friend. I laid them flat in a small pot and put them under a cloche and they have been in that cloche for four years and I don't dare take it out. It hasn't grown a lot. Nothing like the one you have. But it's alive and so I don't mess with her. Conversely, my experience with curtisii has been different. It lives on a shelf, is very very long but I treat it much like other hoyas and don't water it for weeks. I am of the "don't mess with her" plan though. I've rooted several cuttings of her in the same way I rooted other cuttings, long vine in water. I should try some terrestrial rooting with it though!

I bought my plant as tengchongensis but as it did not bloom, there is no way for me to confirm the ID. I looked at the publication (linked in the video description) and IMO there is not that much of a difference in leaves to ID these purely by leaves. So I will call it as I got it until I bloom it :) I would keep the tag on your plant as serpens until your plant blooms as well. We may see some changes in these publications down the road as well :)

My plant also did not bloom. :) It has made peduncles many many times. It does this a lot, now the trick is to getting them to bloom :) I think more patience, and it will eventually bloom. I keep mine in self-watering, because otherwise it gets too dry too fast. If you are watering it yourself, make sure to check every 4-5 days and I would water when top couple of inches get dry.

hello again 8 months later ; I watered my serpins a lot more and since last time I was in touch I have moved house to a cooler location .I hung my hoya serpins out under cover on a deck and she actually flowered prolifically which I was thrilled with .She had well over 30 flower bunches over summer and now after finished flowering has set about 10 long bean like seed pods , I have also potted into a larger Self watering pot and so far so good is actually sending out new growths as well ,I am very thrilled with my hoya serpins ,she is definitely one of my favourites . @@BasiePlants

I have a love/hate relationship with my serpens. She has always been finicky. It’s true that she doesn’t like to be messed with. Once she’s triggered, it’s all downhill from there. I pretty much gave up on her, and when I was ready to chuck her in the bin, SHE HAD NEW BABY LEAVES 😩 It’s such a roller coaster. Here we go again!

Hoya curtisii can grow really well in most soil but the single biggest issue is water. DONT water it often. I have one outside in 90 degree Fahrenheit weather on average and it thrives without watering often. I water mine every two weeks or so and that’s it. I will say if for some reason it does stay too wet it will drop a few leaves rather quickly. Best advice is don’t water often and try to give it good lighting. If you see any yellow leaves stop watering immediately.

The reason for that is because H.serpens doesn't really make a big root system. It is mostly shallow and towards the surface :) IMO it would grow best in a shallower but wider pot. :)

I've been wanting a serpens and researching it a bit before purchasing. I came across your video and decided on tengchongensis instead thanks to you! I just got two good sized cuttings in the mail today that were coiled around in a shallow clear container lined with coco coir and a tiny bit of moss (and lots of algae lol). I thought I was getting a plant not cuttings and was going to pot them together. They look great but I'm terrified of disturbing them! My curtisii seems to love my very bright East window and drying out MUCH more than my other hoya. I water it about every three weeks. I am in NYC -- dry in winter, humid in summer.

I watched this video back when you first posted it, but at that time, I did not have any of these hoyas. I had always been attracted to the curtisii, but heard so many people complain of killing it, that I became intimidated and avoided it. Well, two weeks ago, I finally took the plunge and bought a 3" or 8cm pot. I WISH I had watched this video again BEFORE potting her up yesterday. If I had, I would have put her substrate all the way to the rim of the pot. It's almost there, so I think I will carefully try to add more, and then pin a couple of her vines down. I can only hope for the best. 🤷‍♀

Well, I would not call them climbers, to me, it is a different growth pattern. But in publications, they mostly use the word "creeper" and tbh I am never sure what makes them different from, for example trailers... Like, is there a difference, botanically? :D Who knows. My serpens has bloomed very recently in the UK and is on a south (filtered light) windowsill so I wouldn't say it was reduced light. It's not super warm here and the temps go down to 16-17 at night as the window is open so it's possibly that? Also major regrets over just swapping my cuttings from coco peat to pon!!

I have both in bark + bits of sphagnum moss flakes. I'm near the equator, so temperatures range from 20-40°C throughout the year. I keep both serpens and tengchongensis preferentially in flatter pots. For tengchongensis, I have had them in different places, and it: 1) can handle 30-40% humidity (of course, less aerial root growth this way) 2) some tropical sun (under a 50% shade net) for serpens: 1) it doesn't like to dry out 2) it doesnt like to see any direct tropical sun. Curtisii really like it more humid i'd assume, but fine without. It cannot take equatorial sunlight though. (shrivels within a day) i guess it may be difficult to flower any of them here in SEA without specialized environments.

Pretty much spot on :) I would not expose serpens to higher light either, but the plant I have as tengchongensis has darker leaves and I assume it could take on a bit more light than serpens. My curtisii does well in high light but of course, it is not direct light at all :) It does okay in 50% humidity, but I never tried her in my tent. Maybe I will :) I sadly did not flower any of the three.

Serpens and tengchongensis usually grow across rocks and curtisii would creep across wood, but it is not really a climber - not like verticillata, and other hoyas that push out long vines and wrap around things :)

Found a Curtisii yesterday at a garden center. It was mistakenly bunched in with the variegated creeping figs, priced and labeled as a fig.🎉 Thank you for all the good information on my new Curtisii!

Thank you for this timely video. I’m still learning my Serpens’ quirks and care as it’s new. A few vines are growing like crazy while one up and died immediately upon arrival. 🥴 Curtisii was a challenge but my third attempt has been doing well for awhile now. Mostly because I leave it alone and water when dry but I’m sure I could mess it up any second now. 😂 Currently searching for a tengchongensis to add. So stinking cute.

Yunnan province is a lovely place. I would imagine that it would be quite misty so with my new to me tengchongensis I am misting every time I go by at least for now as I just acquired her. I really appreciate you describing the spreading this plants do by nature so I can attempt to mimic that. Its great to see the vast array of the hoya world but I really appreciate the information you give and hope lacunosa is on your radar.

It is very misty indeed :) But I have found they can addapt to regular humidity (I mean, 50%). I have a lot of lacunosas, but need to get a bit more before I decide to make a video :D

I love this video. I have had my serpens over a year and while she has not died back she has not grown at all. Hopefully with these tips I can get her to grow. Tenchungensis is currently in the mail and should be to me by Friday 💚

I hope the advice helps! Make sure to also check your serpens for mites. They can stunt the growth as well.

I have a healthy curtisii with long-ish vines, but I don't love it for some reason. I'm coming to the realization that I prefer the Hoyas with larger leaves. BUT, after watching this video, I will take some of the longer tendrils and turn them up toward the pot to lay and pin them down in hopes that they root and the whole thing becomes bushier. (Mine is growing in Lechuza-Pon, in a self-watering pot that's about 15 cm. I've had it for a year, no flowers yet.)

Oh I am the opposite! I love these with small leaves and I want more and more of them. I do like the big leaved ones too, obviously, some are very impressive, but not as much as before...

When I found my H curtisii it was in insanly overwatered coco peat. I separated the cuttings, rinsed them off, and moved them to a net pot with bark and a little sphag. It took a while to recover and get going, but all is well now. It seems to like what you said - light and a light watering weekly.

Yes :) and of course, not upsetting the little beast :D I will try not to disturb it now, but eventually I would like to perhaps start another one in a shallow pot. I think it could look cute.

Hi Miro, Website Growjungle sold Serpens in the Netherlands, now it's out off stock. I think I bought mine there last year. No issues with Serpens, it lives in pon with constant moisture. Around 60% humidity.

I never tried it in pon, but it did great in LECA until mealies came along. I do think it needs consistent moisture too. :)

My Hoya tengchongensis I got from you, grows fairly well. I originally laid her flat on a surface. Mix is regular soil, orchid mix and perlite, and humidity is around 30%.

She is a really good grower! Much better in my opinion than serpens, and not so sensitive. Serpens, who knows how long she'll remain happy :D
