I thoroughly enjoyed this, in fact. I'm a hydrangea lover and have lots in my acidic garden. I fell in love with pink hydrangeas watching programs from the UK on TV. Our soil here in Vancouver is very acidic, which they love, but blue is the dominant colour. Now they have lots of panicle hydrangeas that turn pink in the Fall and I'm going to give them a go. I have found two species(?) of hydrangeas that are pink, no matter what and I treasure them. Thanks for the video. I have a few hydrangeas in pots and we are about to go below zero next week so I shall put them in the unheated garage with all my other plants in terracotta pots. 👍🏻

Just found your Chanel and really like your knowledge and explanation of growing potted hydrangeas. This year May 2020 I potted my first ever hydrangea in a fake clay pot. I have only one brownish terra cotta colour and small blooms. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada zone 4-8?. I’m saddened that no blooms and one bloom is small like 3 inches wide. Hydrangeas are hard to grow for me and than I have to learn how to prune them. Maybe next year I can plant it in my tiny garden. Gets plenty of sun. Used compost, and regular potting soil. 😩

We are zone 8b in this part of the UK. We have zones roughly 6-10 in the UK depending on location. You may be able to fin a variety more suitable to your location. Hydrangea Paniculata could be worth looking into.

Hello. It should be ok outdoors year round if you are in the UK. The flowers may benefit from frost protection though.

I have a poorly place hydrangea, being it gets too much sunlight, but I use it only for early cutting propagation. I now have a lot of planters full of hydrangeas everywhere.

Hi Dan, thanks for sharing your video. I am new to gardening. I bought a small hydrangea (about 10 leaves and 5 inches height) from Wilko three months ago and I planted it in a pot. Referring to the label on the pot, it should have pink flowers. It is growing bigger in these few months but the color of leaves are light green. But some of them are turning to light yellow in these couple of weeks. I do not know what happens. Do I need to add vinegar in the water to water the plant because the water in UK is hard? I do not know how to fix the problem. Please advise.
@homegardens76825 жыл бұрын
Hi! You may have to wait until later this season or next year for the flowers. Regarding the yellowing of the leaves this could be Nitrogen deficiency. Try a feed. You can buy Hydrangea feed mix. Also, overwatering can cause nutrient deficiency by washing away nutrients in the soil. Try watering generously just once or twice a week. Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on.

I really miss New Zealand, our soil was fantastic for growing stuff. I now live in Sydney, Australia and seriously you've got two options: 1. Super duper sandy, 2. So much friggin clay LOL Hydrangeas will be my next project this year, and I can't wait! Soil mixture will be a tricky one to perfect however.

I have never been to New Zealand. I imagine it's amazing there.

Oh its brilliant! Stick just about anything in the ground and it will grow. I have seen people pull plants out of the ground and sort of leaving them on the side of the road and they come back to life again growing crazy

Tips for growing Watermelons in containers is to use Westland "farmyard manure" mixed with a general multi purpose with some coffee grounds. I did quite well with that as you have seen before! :) And tips for being resourceful (some I have learnt from you Dan!) is to get soil from molehills, cowpats from grazing cattle, even if it is just a few bags it makes a difference and coffee grounds from your coffee shops (waitrose) leaf piles and horse manure.
@homegardens76826 жыл бұрын
good stuff there Marc. Cowpats are incredibly good for plant nutrition. Your giving me ideas now.

One in the city must think outside the box indeed. I went to my local pet shop and bought the least expensive tank strata. (stones). A bag needed for my 20 inch pot (depth) was about $8.00. Not bad for a well drained plant vs soil leaking out the bottom of the pot.

Using only compost will usually burn the roots so that may be the problem. Idk. But I do know that a mixture of potting soil AND some compost mixed together is best. The compost helps to feed the plant.

Hey. They like organic matter like rotted manure and good quality compost. Try some ericaceous compost if your soil is light. Water regularly but not too much to avoid browning of leaves. Full sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon is good to avoid burning of the leaves and flowers. Let me know if that helps.
