Do you grow jalapenos? What's your favorite variety?

Give you an update. So as always the jalapeños are just thriving, my poblanos are really coming together and are producing. Bell pepper plant just sprouted but waiting on the other three to come up. The reapers are growing nicely can't wait for them to produce. My scorpions ( hopefully that's what they are) tiny but one root died. The ghost peppers wow from nothing to flowers everywhere and peppers popping up all over. It's really producing. Out of nowhere I am very happy with its production. Now my tomato plant is producing nicely but it getting that blossom end rot. I looked it up and it seems to be a calcium problem. What is a good calcium provider I can use to cure it

I bought some jalapeño starts this year from Home Depot. They are doing real well. The error of my ways was buying starts I think. It will be a lot more economical and satisfying to start from seeds. It is ok, it has been fun to grow. The garden has been more fun than I thought it would be. Thinking about all the things I am going to do next year. Thanks for video!

In my first successful attempt to grow Jalapeños (fairly cold climate here), I molded a seeding tray by pressing a few layers of tin foil in a egg box, filled that with soil, planted the seeds and placed it on top of my ancient gas heater, right above the pilot light. At that time of the year, and because I have the blood of the penguin, the heater didn't really had to be on stand-by anymore, but I left it on long enough for the seeds to germinate. I'm starting a new batch, so I checked the Ol' tube for more tips. Long story short, that trick of using the radiant heat of your fridge is ingenious, got a tray snug and warm up there. Thank you!

Hey! I am going to grow some this summer, i don't know what variety though, i took the seeds from a store bought green Jalapeño. I usually germinate the seeds in some paper towel and switch them to soil once they germinate. Worked well for the scotch bonnets and bird's eye i tried last year(and tomatoes) . I want to try jalapeños this year because they are less hot and give bigger fruits. Thanks for the video, buddy!

I use a mix of perlite, bark and soil for my potting mix for everything. Would just perlite and soil be suitable for peppers?

I'm growing some right now, the variety is whatever I got from the grocery store. I just removed the seeds and ended up with several plants (lots of the seeds were not viable, but some were!).
@PSPSMITH20223 жыл бұрын
It can work that way, but I've preferred to just buy a solid heirloom with a fruit I love as many of the options in grocery stores are some form of hybrid where every generation of peppers from the seeds may or may not be a consistent or even good result (that's if they're even viable seeds that will sprout.) Starting out with a tasty heirloom variety and practicing some simple garden layout planning to limit or prevent cross pollination with other genetically similar plants means I harvest thousands of viable seeds for the same type of pepper every year. I picked up my favorite heirloom variety of pepper at a seed exchange in our neighborhood. That was several years ago, and the pepper I'm still growing taste identical to the first set I grew.

TY for your video. I’ve been watching everything I can about starting peppers from seed. I’ve started some of the big jalapeños from seeds from last year. (Also planted seeds from the hottest banana pepper I’ve ever had) They’ve sprouted now, and I’m wondering, when do you make your selection of the one you want to keep? Also my biggest seedling is growing on the very side of the cup and I thought that should be my pick, but there’s no dirt on one side of the cup it’s growing on. Should I pick this one anyway being it’s the biggest one? TY & God Bless 😸

Hey Tino, you may try to stimulate the ghost pepper flowers to see if that will help. Peppers are self-pollinating but it wouldn't hurt to help them out. Just gently shake the branch or use a q-tip to pollinate the flower.

@@BackyardEden had a question lol. What a surprise right 😂😁. Well I planted some Trinidad scorpions a while back. First I germinated them paper towel and ziplock method. Three to four weeks and nothing. So I decided to just plant them in a solo cup. Nothing, so today I decided to throw them out. But before I did I slowly and carefully started dumping out the dirt and to my surprise found two seeds and 4 sprouts close to the bottom. My question is is it best to take them out and transplant them to another cup and plant them or did I make a mistake by taking them out. I was worried because they were close to the bottom that they would of died. My guess is I left them out and it rained really hard that the seeds got pushed down close to the bottom. They look really healthy even on has like a leaf already forming. How do I replant them. Should I put the seeds in the soil with the growth outside the ground or just put them in until they come out the ground on their own. I'm gonna check your page see if you have anything on planting germinated seeds thanks for any advice I get

can you grow with the seeds from the jalapeno itself?
@Martyntd54 жыл бұрын
Because the peppers are picked green, the seeds inside are immature. You have to leave the peppers to fully ripen on the vine to get mature seeds. You might get lucky with the odd one, but if you plant seeds from a green pepper, most will fail. If you can find a mature red pepper you should be OK.
@JFlywheel4 жыл бұрын
That's what I did. Wife made bacon wrapped poppers, I saved the seeds. Put them in water and remove all the ones that float (most of them). Some of the ones that sink are viable. I'm planting like 15 or so seeds per cup and some sprouted. Interestingly only 2 of the 5-6 cups seemed to get sprouts, but multiple plants in the two cups that did. I imagine store bought seeds work better but no loss if this didn't work other than a little time.

You forgot to mention to wet the starting mix before planting while it’s still in the tub . If you don’t the mix doesn’t hydrate well . If you plant in cups first the mix won’t get wet very well it will try to float out of cup . Sound trivial but it’s important . Add water a little at a time to tub and mix well with hand until you have a damp crumbly mix , you will have a much more pleasant planting experience . I noticed his was already wet with water but failed to mention to do it first . Just trying to help
