I have tried this method with other fruits and vegetables. Sometimes there is rot, but you must transfer it from the water before it gets too rotten. You can remove the rot if you want, but I don't think it matters. Gardening is not an exact science, some things work better than others. Keep trying or change a step. It may vary based on climate and other factors.
