I planted my first 6 cloves in November after stratifiying for a few weeks (we don't have much of a winter here). To my utmost delight they all sprang up immediately and in early April they were done. Among all the veg I've been trying for the first time (I do flowers mainly) and came out well, the garlic made me the happiest. I danced around, showing them to anyone in sight.. it's such magic - put one clove, get a bunch! :)

Oh, I love that "God's gonna do the watering today" Amen to that. I planted some store bought garlic last fall because all the seeds stores were sold out by then. They did ok but once all the April showers came; they started to go bad, so I pulled them all. They still grew of medium size and are good enough for cooking. Now watching this video, went to Baker's Creek and they are sold out. I was fortunate to have found some at Gurney's. So folks, get your garlic orders in early like Mr. Hollis said. Thanks Mr. Hollis and Mrs. Nancy for all you do to teach us. I'm off to watch part 2 of this series now.

In a rustic sort of garden I don't worry too much about uniformity, and does that template not repack the soil you just loosened? I kind of like obtaining loose granular soil by the use of mulch with wood bark and greens, and such. But I digress I only grow in containers. And my garlic right now is from 12 to 18 high, looking real nice. A great video. Thanks

Hi Hollis and Nancy, I love your videos. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for fall garlic in containers--in this video Hollis says you need to plant fall garlic in the ground so it can stay warm, but we're renting so I'd prefer to do containers! I saw the other videos on container garlic but it looks like they're grown in spring. I think we'll probably still try fall garlic in containers but maybe make the containers small and bring em inside if we get bad frosts (we're in zone 6b). Thanks!

I am the same way. I just don't have the template. I am so glad to see this episode!! I have two hardneck varieties that came in the mail. Just is, I don't have that many days till first frost here. Oct 20 is first frost for CT 6a. May be later. If it is, then God knew it had to be later so my garlic will grow! Can I use something else beside seaweed solution? I have to get my garlic in tomorrow so I have no time to get the solution..unless HD sells it.

Go with containers at this time. The garlics will be small at harvest time in July but they are extremely tasty as seasoning in your cooking. For the large garlic, plant about 6 weeks prior to your first predicted frost date in the fall and allow them to winter over. By the following July you will have some nice Garlic 👍

Hollis I sure hope you can give me some good news cause I think I messed up. I planted mine in pots cause I don't have an earth 🌏 garden in the fall. None of the community gardens offer them so all my fall/winter planting I do in pots. I'm in Ohio and get all that freezing and snow ya spoke of. Should I bring them indoors to the house 🏡 or will that stunt them or ruin them? I was so excited to plant them for the first time. :( 😞 I sure hope they grow. I did amend my soil with bone meal and some worm castings too. The worm 🐛 castings was to kind of loosen up my soil a little more than anything. I did mulch them over good too just cause I thought 💭 that was smart 🤓! ANY of your garden genius advice would be appreciated as always. Thanks so much for all you and Nancy do. You know I just love y'all both! God Bless! My best to Nancy and Bing Bing! 😊 ✝️💞✝️

+Lisa Booker Hi sweet friend! No worries, simply bring them into your garage or anywhere you have that is out of the weather. Set them back outside in the spring. Don't forget to water them once per week during the winter. The containers tend to dry out quickly. Post some pix on our Facebook Page of your Garlics, we would love to see them😍. We send you a big hug around your neck. {{{HUG}}}

OK. So this is the first year that I have grown garlic. My harvest was wonderful! Now I have a little problem. I hung them up in my garage, and I should have cut the tops off. Now there is a brown mushy stuff in the center of the bulb. It only affect the paper covering on the cloves. When you peel them, the cloves are still nice and white. My concern is, if I try to plant these in October, for next years garlic, will I get disease because of the rot on the cloves? Should I peel the garlic to get rid of pathogens? Peel, and dip in rubbing alcohol before planting or.............?

We love the tops in stir fry, soups, etc. That is why we plant Spring Garlic in containers. They don’t get as big as the Fall Garlic but that is okay because what we are really after with the spring garlic is the tops

I grow them until they get 6 inches tall and then cut them and they grow again but after 4-5 times of them growing to 6 inches they stop producing so I empty the pot and the bulbs have shriveled up. Why is this?

So glad the videos are helping you!! Best of luck to you with your garden👍👍. We were located in Newport News Virginia. We just relocated to our new homestead in Florida. We will be releasing a tour video of the new homestead on January 18th (next Thursday). Be sure to tune in. Always plan your garden around the predicted freeze dates. You can google that and find out your dates by zip code. Have a peaceful weekend ❤️

Do you let some of your produce go to seed ( Garlic,onions etc ) so you dont need to buy more seed, and only use what you reap to carry on the next harvest.

+Donna Anderson Thanks for watching Donna. No you don't, they can soak longer if you want to. Many people let the soak for 24 hours. You can let them dry off after soaking and it won't hurt them. I usually pull them from the soak and plant them

Not to down on this video, but you can grow garlic easily without all the expense. You can get compost for dirt cheap at materials supply places and can plant directly in that, maybe get some free wood chip from a tree service for mulch. I say this because I want people to know that gardening can be done very inexpensively, and it's not complicated. Well, trying to grow mangoes in Alaska is complicated.

We don’t like the taste of carrot tops so we don’t save them. We will have a compost pile in our new homestead but I still will not save the tops. I will burn them. Saving carrot tops in your compost pile draws carrot flies and will ruin your garden

im in 9a man. Gulf Coast. Its Sept 28th. What happens if i put in now? What happens if you put garlic in too early?
@HollisNancysHomestead
@HollisNancysHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
You want to time it 45 days before your first frost. However, living in Florida I don’t feel that is too much of a concern. The idea is you want your garlic to root in before the first frost but not start any green above the soil level. I don’t worry about that too much. The garlic can easily tolerate a few light frosts. So, I will be planting my garlic here in my area (Zone 9A) the 2nd week of October
