Mint is one of the easiest herbs to grow from a cutting. There are two ways to grow mint from a cutting, first from a stem and second from the root. When growing mint in-ground, be very careful of where you plant mint because mint grows like a weed and it will take over your garden. To get started on growing mint from the stem, choose a stem that is at least 4 to 6 inches long with at least 3 to 4 sets of leaves. Get some pruning shears and cut the stem. Make sure the stem you choose is not flowering or going to seed. Remove all the leaves from bottom part of the steam leaving only four leaves on top. Put the cutting of mint stem in water. Place the mint cutting in a window that receives plenty of sun. Make sure to change water every 3 to 4 days. After 2 weeks, the mint cutting develops really nice set of roots. Dig a hole in a pot containing potting soil and place the newly rooted mint stem in the hole. Cover the mint plant with soil and pack the soil down around the plant. Water the plant and the newly established mint plant is ready to grow.

I tried propagating mint from the mint growing outside the bar I work at. I failed twice. I did everything I read that I was suppose to do. From the size and length of the cuttings, changing the water out every few days or when the water got a little murky... They all died before they grew roots. Until I read that plants will not thrive with tap water! Either use filtered water, collected rain water, or water that has sat out for at least 24 hours (which causes the chemicals in tap water to dissipate). Once I did that, my third batch of mint cuttings started to grow roots and thrive! Not sure if this will help, but it sure did help me!

Planting it in the garden, without putting in deep borders to contain it. It really grows like a weed and will quickly cover your whole garden space. Use four vertical paving slabs to make an underground container for the mint roots to keep them under control.

Got a small spearmint plant growing wild out back. Pretty sure it originated with the huge spearmint fields on the end of town, one of Wrigley's biggest suppliers. Going to take a cutting tomorrow and see if I can get it to root, and then make it a companion plant for one of our potted spider plants.

@dixielee284
@dixielee284 4 жыл бұрын
From my personal experience, when you're trying to propagate root from an existing mint plant, it should NOT be placed in direct sunlight otherwise it will wilt. INDIRECT sunlight is the best at this stage. Also, don't forget to change out the water daily or every 2 days.

I put mint cuttings many times in water to propagate and some of them even start to root and also new leaves open up but at this stage I cannot plant them in soil coz their root is barely 1cm long. So when I wait for the root to grow longer these cuttings start rotting/getting brown and die. I change water every 5 days and also someone suggested to use drinking water and I tried that as well but the same happens. Pls guide.

I know you wanted answer from the creator of this video, but I can answer this too, as I'm gardening for a few years now... I don't think the mint mind that it's really close to glass. Mine grew roots and the end of the mint is touching the glass. So as long it has fresh water and sun, it'll grow. You don't have to put anything in the water at all. The mint will do it's job, it just needs time. I don't think it needs something to help it grow. Just be patient. Hope I helped a little bit!

Tie a copper wire around the pot to deter snails and slugs, they hate copper. To repel millipedes, spread diatomaceous earth, red chilli powder or borax around the pot. Ensure other plant leaves dont overhang or touch the mint or the insects could get at it via that route. Avoid using chemical sprays on your edible plants, remember you'll end up consuming them and polluting the environment. All the best

Thank you again for the great video. I have had some mint cuttings in water for two weeks and they have started to grow roots and a couple of new stems in the water have started to branch out as well. My only concern is that on the leaves there are some black spots where the leaves have dried out. Should I be concerned about that? I am changing the water every few days.

As it is has been two weeks for you, I think you have changed it to soil already. Unless they are still appearing, you should not worry, and you can pluck the black leaves off if you want to

Should tap water work or do we need distilled water? I noticed roots budding out but my leaves are turning brown and brittle faster. Not enough sun or humidity, I guess. One of my stronger stem cuttings started growing a whole branch from one of its lower nodes submerged in water. I'm gonna 'root' for it (get it?).🤞.

Did folks have access to distilled water 200 yrs ago? That should answer your question. 🤔

Oh I'm so disappointed, I am trying to regrow basil from a cutting but was given one that's mostly gone to seed, is there a way it will still work? Should I give up? Or can I plant the seeds directly into the ground? It's the start of summer here so perfect timing to grow it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for another great video.

I just noticed they are white seeds? Is it still too late to grow from this cutting? Can plant these seeds? Or do I wait until they turn black?
