Hello. My friend is growing okra and had me come pull some of his seedlings to thin for him and so I could have some to try. I pulled them mostly with a decent amount of root but of course it seems like they are wilted from shock. I have them in a potting mix , watered in and in the shade outside since they were already growing outside. How long will it take for them to recover from the shock so I can plant them in the ground?

Thanks for posting, my grandparents love gardening they have their own beautiful vegetables garden. They don't use any special potting soil mix just normal garden soil, they use cow dung & chicken manure as fertilizers. The plants provide us enough fresh healthy vegetables .3rd year year medical university boy from Malaysia.👌👍✌

Here along the texas coast people who grow okra normally plant several thirty foot rows and it's normal to picks serveral pounds daily and the okra is a very fast producer. We normally don't even start the seeds until the weather is warm (more importantly the soil is warm). Okra can grow fast and can reach 12 or more feet tall (regular varieties). Pods are best picked when around four inches long because the summer heat can make them woody at an early size. I usually chop the okra and freeze it using the frozen okra in lots of dishes but my favorite is to simply toss the okra into a skillet with a little oil, frying it then adding a sprinkle of corn meal as it cooks. Last year I planted a dozen or so plants in large tubs and they produced well but not near enough for my usage. So if you like okra I'd plant plenty and freeze whatever you don't use right away.

Similar to how I grow my Okra. I have a similar potting mix (3rd of compost, peat, and perlite) in my pots and my soil stays moist. I usually only water my plants about every 2 weeks. I check the soil moisture with a meter and water when it's needed. In my experience, pots seem to retain moisture better than my raised beds. I'm assuming that it's because the pots have an enclosed bottom whereas the raised beds don't.

Hi California gardener, I hope you can help me with my goal. I want to grow a variety of different vegetables and fruits in my apartment. So of course my dilemma is space. So my question to you is, can I grow okra indoors in a container all year long? I am also looking to grow shallots, garlic, bananas, blueberries, pomegranates, spinach, carrots, dragon fruit, lemons, kiwi, and that's just to name a few. The fruit trees are all Dwarfs. Lol you are probably thinking this girl must be crazy. LOL eventually I want to have all of these move to a yard when my fiancé and I buy our first house. California Gardener I also want to say that I really enjoy your video and you teach so much in every single video. I hope you are able to give me a few tips and how to?

"Nombo giant" is a little different from the okra grown in southeastern US. Are the long Nombo okra pods still tender at that harvested length in your video? In South Carolina "Clemson Spineless" are best harvested at 2-3 inches or they become woody, stingy and almost inedible. Hot long summers in SC produce tall wide leaved okra plants that produce in abundance. Very informative video. Thank you.
@CaliforniaGardening
@CaliforniaGardening Жыл бұрын
The Nombo giant pods can be harvested much bigger than Clemson spineless, while still being tender. Too big and it becomes woody too. Its a fine line.

1st time okra grower! Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY...What do I know about growing okra!! I found out real quickly. I love the plant and its flowers and I had plenty of both in my container. Then almost overnight I discovered about 25-50 very very large okra!!! Several video people showed regular size okra, but you have my size okra. However, I think mine are even longer! The color is not as dark green as your. When should I pick? Can I eat them? Help needed by the New York kid!!!

Haha nice to know you are in your back yard every evening loving the moments with your plants. I am like that too and I just absolutely love just being amidst my plants in my backyard! I am in the city of Irvine. Yes I can understand it might be a little more hot and dry in desert areas. The only suggestion I can make is using raised beds to control soil and lots of watering. See my drip irrigation videos for containers and raised beds. This is a must for desert areas. Good luck!

Hi Great Video thank you, I discovered a trick for fast germination of Okra seeds that you might like to try....brew a regular cup of tea like Lipton's or Tetley for example, let it get very strong and let the tea cool down....then soak your Okra seeds in the brewed tea for 12 to 24 hours....plant the seeds, and they should germinate within a few days. I'm growing a Climson Seedless here in the San Joaquin Valley and with the high temperatures they are doing quite well. I did notice, however, that the young plant leaves were eaten by some bugs, maybe slugs. When they grew bigger the bug bites were no longer a problem. Do you know what kind of bug was eating my okra? All your veggies and fruits grow very well -- great job.
@CarrieNita
@CarrieNita 8 жыл бұрын
The bites are probably from a couple of different little beasties - sow/pill bugs, snails/slugs, or Japanese beetles. I used iron phosphate pellets and I also used a solution of (100% cold pressed with azadirachtin) Neem oil, Dawn dish soap and water. I sprayed every 7-10 days, consistently.

Yes my young okra seedlings had holes in them in one bed. Most likely earwig or snail damage. In my next bed I sprayed the seedlings with neem oil every week and saw very less damage.
